Recollection

It's queer to spend Christmas on land. He isn't sure what he ought to do. For years, he's just stood in his Captain's cabin, listening respectfully--real respect, not the kind men put on for someone they couldn't care less about but can't offend--to the stories about Christmases long ago, battles and splendid things Captain did that didn't surprise him because he knew Captain could.

But he couldn't stay at sea after the trial, so he went on land; and he doesn't know what to do.

He sits in a tavern, telling himself the stories Sawyer used to tell.
