Make Believe
Written for Ellen.
Once Upon A Time--
Her faerie-tale hair poured over the windowsill
Like a princess, with golden curls
Long enough to climb up
And nobody ever noticed that her dress was torn and her eyes were wet
Because Cinderella had no father to give her away at the wedding
Once Upon A--Once--Time--
Her faerie-tale voice sang songs by the window
Where the magic man walked he could hear
And he cast magic songs because he couldn't bear to listen
Oh, Love--O love--
Oh--O--love--love
Love
Because there were too many mirrors where Beauty could see him reflected
Time--A Upon Once--Once Upon--
Her faerie-tale eyes watched the long roads
And she prayed Brother brother you are coming?
Like Bluebeard's wife, watching the long roads for the dust of horse feet thumping hard on the dirt
And the magic man turned his mirrors around
Cast
Spells
Like a madman throwing curses around at the people who were always too stupid to understand
The horse-skin rugs make his feet slip
Because Briar Rose always had nightmares when she was a little girl
A Upon Time--Once Time--Time A--
Her faerie-tale hands wove the golden threads
A wooden door with a mirror above it reflecting the painted lamps
That shine blue flame when you light them with a burning twig
The spinning wheel made a familiar sound
She was glad because she remembered the familiar sound
Like tap water running and the
Stove timer going off
Because the Mermaid walked on knives and cut her feet but there were never any wounds
Time--Once--Once Upon A--Once
Her faerie-tale soul sat in the tower alone
Watching, singing, spinning
Saying one day he comes one day it ends one day the magic man will die
The flickering fires in her tower room made the tapestries dance
And under her hands things sprang alive
The magic man turned the mirrors and cast the spells but no matter how long he talked
Nothing ever changed
No one ever came
In the tower of dark darks and pale pales
She sat alone
Until mother called and said it was time for dinner
Because Snow White was never really real
