Goodbye
After Cosette's father left, Marius searched for five minutes before he found her. She was looking out the highest window of their house after the retreating form of an old man, and put his hand on her shoulder gently. "What are you doing, Cosette?"
"I'm saying good-bye."
"What?"
"That's Papa. How nice it is to call him Papa! he won't let me. I don't think he's coming back."
Marius shook his head. Valjean would not come back and Marius did not want him to, but Cosette did not need to know that. "Don't be silly, my dear."
"I'm not."
