|
st ANGEL = Adam: Fallen to Earth in the Second Impact, this giant of light was used as the "source material" of the creation of the Evangelions that figure so centrally in the series' story. Being the progenitor of the human race, Adam needs little further introduction. It's also worth noting that after being used to create the EVAs, Adam contracted from its giant form into an embryo, which Kaji eventually delivers to Gendo. |

nd ANGEL = Lilith: A seven-eyed, bone-white body crucified to a red cross at the heart of NERV's Terminal Dogma, this entity was thought to be Adam until the near-end of the series. Lilith was Adam's little publicized first wife, who (before being exiled by God from Eden for being too sexually domineering) reportedly bore him 100 children a day. Kaworu even declares that human beings are actually descendants of Lilith, not Eve. After her brief marriage to Adam, LItlith reputed to have attained the status of an archdemoness and married the devil himself. |

rd ANGEL = Sachiel: The first Angel seen in the TV series, this giant creature bears the name of "covering of God." A Cherub, Sachiel lives in the 1st Heaven and presides over the planet Jupiter. Some believe he is a fallen angel who now serves the four subprinces of Hell's hierarchy. |

th ANGEL = Shamshiel: This Angel, which took the form of a flatwormlike creature, bears the name of "mighty sun of God." Shamshiel rules the 4th Heaven, served as a guardian of Eden, and is said to be one of the chief aides of the superangel (or archangel) Uriel. However, despite this impressive resume, some believe that Shamshiel is a fallen angel who taught mortals the astrological secrets of the sun. |

th ANGEL = Ramiel: This airborne, diamondlike entity's namesake is often identified with the superangel Uriel, the chief of thunder. Ramiel presides over true visions, has authority over the souls that will be raised from the grave on Judgment Day, and is rumored to have destroyed the hosts of Sennacherib. |

th ANGEL = Gahiel: This enormous sea monster bears the name of a relatively anonymous angel. Gahiel's only distinction would seem to be his status as a guardian of the 6th Heaven (guarding heavens being a common job for angels). Not having been named in the Bible, Gaghiel was doubtless demoted to the status of a fallen angel by the Catholic Church. |

th ANGEL = Israfel: The self-replicating angels bears the name of "the burning one." Israfel has the duty of blowing the trumpet on Judgment Day, and as such is an angel of resurrection and song -- both quite appropriate, given its duplication powers and the musical synchronation Shinji and Asuka use to defeat it. |

th ANGEL = Sandalphon: This egg-born creature, which manifested in the heart of a volcano, bears the name of "cobrother." Twin brother of the greatest angel of all, Sandalphon is famous for being one of the tallest angels in the heavens and is a master of heavenly song. Sometimes known as the "angel of tears," Sandalphon is also said to be central to the process of sexual differentiation in a human embryo. |

th ANGEL = Matariel: Bearing an uncanny resemblance to a mechanical spider from the old Johnny Quest TV series, this entity bears the name of the angel of the rain. Matariel is also reputed to be one of the "rules of this world, " a title commonly attributed to Satan. |
