XP XPlained
< ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
"XP", or "Experience", is the system used to develop characters over the course of time. Each time a character is present at a game, she gains a number of XP points, depending on various factors (see 'Earning XP', below). These XP points can then be traded for additional Traits on the character's character sheet (see 'Spending XP', below), thus improving her capabilities and overall performance in the game. Therefore, an incentive is provided for players to keep their characters for long periods of time (and to not continually change their characters, which can be highly disruptive to the ongoing narrative of the chronicle. The longer a character is kept going, the more powerful, useful and interesting she becomes.

Earning XP
XP is awarded at each game, as follows:
Basic - 2
Vampire of the Week - 3
Downtime - 1
Costume of the Week - 1

Basic is awarded to every character that is present at the game, as a simple measure of the brief experiences they have acquired at the Temple meeting. Vampire of the Week is comprised of two seperate categories, Storyteller Nomination and Player Nomination. Very often these are further divided into the two Packs, since the majority of the game has been spent with the two Packs apart, giving a total of four VotW awards. (
Note that the
Vampire of the Week awards are a homage to Rob and Carrie-May, who came up with the idea). Downtime is a simple bonus award for all players who hand in Downtime at the beginning of the game. Finally, Costume of the Week is an award given to the best costume; this (hopefully) provides an incentive for the players to dress up as their characters rather than just wear their "civvies".

Spending XP
XP is spent to improve a character's abilities, and the costs are as follows:
Traits (Physical/Social/Mental) - 1 per dot
Abilities - 1 per dot
Virtues - 2 per dot
Path/Willpower - 3 per dot
Clan Disciplines - 3/3/6/6/9 (levels 1-5)
Non-Clan Disciplines - 4/4/8/8/12 (levels 1-5)
Ritae - 2 per Ritus

The first dot in all Disciplines and Abilities must be taught by another Cainite with proficiency in the appropriate rait of at least level 2. A Discipline cannot be advanced by more than one level per week. Traits and Willpower have maximums according to thge character's Generation, as do Abiliites and Disciplines (although the maximum for these for most characters is 5). Backgrounds and Influences cannot be increased by spending XP, they must be increased by direct action either in the game or (more commonly) over Downtime.
