It was a very successful regatta with a large fleet of Optimists. 41 Optimist sailors took to the waters of the Sandakan Harbour with the Sandakan town in the background. It was like sailing in the Hong Kong harbour. Piasau Boat Club, Sarawak sent 4, KYC sent 18, TYC sent 8, SYC had 11sailors.
KYC dominated most categories except the Novice Class. |

According to our ex National Coach, and present State Coach Hj Ahmad Yusoff, it was the biggest fleet of 420s racing at one regatta.
TYC sent 3 teams, SYC had 2 and KYC sent 2 teams as well.
KYC won 1st, 2nd with TYC 3rd |

420 sailors were treated to some pre-race training by Leonard Chin who also showed some videos on 420 handling.
It is good to see so many young sailors like Melissa Eng (L) and Siau Ling (R) from SYC enjoy themselves. Here we can see the tiller is not held but a protest flag is flying. |

Our sailors are trained to protect themselves from the sun with good sunblock paints and UV proof suits. |

Some, prefer a more conventional approach by wearing "special" sun protecting gear as Iris Yap of Tawau Yacht Club demonstrates.
Besides being very effective against the Sun, it is also effective against SARS.
Both Amy and Iris did very well in the 420 regatta. |
