| The 3rd Festival Sandakan Regatta 2004 kicked off on the 11 June 2004 in the Sandakan Harbour with fairly light winds . | ||||||
| The event was amalgamated with the concurrent Inter Yacht Club Games between Kinabalu Yacht Club, Tawau Yacht Club and hosts, Sandakan Yacht Club. Sarawak sent a guest team comprising 2 sailors from the Piasau Boat Club of Miri. | ||||||
| The Organisers were wise in choosing the dates with a low variation in tidal level of only 0.6 meter giving a stronger wind to current ratio. Clearly a lesson from past experience has paid off. | ||||||
| Two classes were raced ie the International 420 and the Optimist Class. The Optimist Class had two separate starts for experts and novices. | ||||||
| In a clever utilization of Race Committee equipment, a trapezoid course was integrated with a triangle course in which the Optimist experts raced an inner loop trapezoid, the novice Optimists sailed a trapezoid without a loop and the 420s raced around two triangles. It was observed that all classes finished at about the same time. | ||||||
| The Notice of Race barred all SUKMA sailors from obtaining points for the interclub points computation and so none of them took part. This left the door open to the second line of sailors to show their expertise. | ||||||
| After two races, the winds died down and in fact a 3rd race which was started had to be abandoned midway when drifting conditions set in. However, in the 420 event, a solitary boat from KYC, helmed by Chu Teen Fung and crewed by Ahmad Fitri managed to complete a shortened course race . | ||||||
| With the two races counted, the overnight leader was Robin Tan from KYC followed by Kristine Chen and Fiona Li. In the Interclub standing, SYC was first followed by KYC and TYC. | ||||||
| The second day of racing began with a zephyr and a very present tidal current speed of .7 m/s about the same direction as the wind. This led to the whole fleet of Optimists sailing backwards away from the start line. | ||||||
| A fleet of 5 powered boats quickly towed the Optimists upwind and had them moored to the mark bouys. | ||||||
| After about 20 minutes with no change in wind strength, the organizers decided to have lunch sent out to sea. After lunch and a further 30 minutes of calm, the organizers ferried all sailors back to shore to cool off. | ||||||
| At 2.30 the 1st race of the day started with the wind coming from the South West . As the leading boats were coming to the leeward mark 2 after the windward mark 1, the wind swung 180 degrees to come from the North East and freshened to 9 knots. | ||||||
| Leading the pack were mainly SYC girls, Karin Lim, Mabel Lim, Kristine Chen and Fiona Li with KYC?s Alissa Chew, Robin Tan and Krystell Chiu in contention . | ||||||
| Mabel Lim missed mark 3 of the trapezoid and lost her brief lead in having to return and round correctly. | ||||||
| As the programme disallowed any races to begin after 4pm., only one race was held inspite of the excellent wind that was still blowing. A notable difference this year is the Jury on a water ski curtesy of Bart Pang the Principal Race Officer | ||||||
| With 3 races only and all to count, sailors with bad races had to face the sums without a bad race discard. | ||||||
| In the final score, KYC?s Robin Tan was declared overall champion with Kristine Chen of SYC in second and Fiona Li also of SYC in third place. | ||||||
| In the Novice category, Kelvin Ng of SYC came first followed by Ahmad Syafig of KYC and Stella Ng of SYC in third position. | ||||||
| In the International 420 event, KYC?s Chu Teen Fung and Ahmad Fitri came first followed by Amy Shang/Iris Yap of TYC in 2nd and Melissa Eng/Andy Hiew of SYC in third position. | ||||||
| Datuk Edmund Chong, MP for Batu Sapi gave away the main prizes. Prize winners then posed for a group photo | ||||||
| In the interclub points standing, SYC made history by dethroning perennial champions KYC by a convincing 28 to 31 points respectively. TYC was third with 95 points. The sailors then entertained the crowd with some performances. SYC did the Line dance and an Aerobics dance. TYC did a lively breakdance. KYC who came unprepared did a follow the leader ketchup song dance. |
||||||
| The next major regatta will be the UMS 10th Anniversary regatta in July and the Merdeka Regatta in early September. KYC will host the next inter yacht club games in 2006. | ||||||
