Once upon a time, in the South of France, a fire broke out in an old Pine tree forest. Because of the resins in the trees, the fire grew at an unusually rapid rate, and within a few minutes, it had spread so much, that people saw birds and other little animals running away in all directions. The men from the village tried to stop the progression of the fire, and many gave their lives to protect and save their land. Acres of Pine forest were reduced to ashes, and weeks after the fire had stopped, the villagers could still see and smell the smoke.
For many months, the mountainside was desolate, and most of the people could not bear to look towards the barren landscape. The people of the village could not imagine that anything had survived. Then in the early spring, the heavy layer of black ash began to lift and reveal tiny spots of green in the mountain. When the people got closer, they discovered that the charred Pinecones had released their seeds as a defense, and tiny Pine trees were now growing through the thick layer of ash.
If you were to go there today, you would never guess that years ago, this beautiful place was nothing but a dismal landscape. Life has come back, and every day, the people of the village make sure to protect and preserve their precious Pine forest.
