Journal 3 ; Life in the Trenches

Trenches were deep holes made from launched shells or were also man-made. There were frontline trenches, as well as second and third that were scattered throughout the battlefield, often in a zigzag pattern. Life in these trenches was harsh. The trenches would often fill up with mud and water from heavy rainfall, this would cause disease and even death. There was little food to eat and the water availaible was bad as well. Rats, lice, and other insects swarmed the trenches. The soldiers' uniforms were continuously soiled and would occasionally be able to bathe on duckboards. Trench raids would occur atnight sometimes when the enemy would try to cross no man's land and deliver a suprise attack on the opposing force. Overall, life in the trenches was harsh and hard conditions came with it.
