After finishing the questions, form groups of 3-4 and connect to the Internet. Identify the following parts of Julius Caesar and post it on your web sites: (Provide an explanation of each stage and where it occurs in the play. If you have problems remembering the terms, go to the top of the page and follow the Greek Tragedy link for definitions.)

Hamartia -
The character flaw is when the tragic hero, Brutus makes a mistake. I think that this flaw was when Brutus fell into Cassius's conspiracy and eventually stabbed Caesar.

Periptiea -
Following the death of Julius Caesar, Brutus encounters a downfall and a turn in fortune. Before Caesar's death, Brutus was kind and honorable and nothing terribly bad happened to him. But since Caesar's death, Brutus makes multiple unwise decisions that leave him in a rut.

Anagnorisis -
There is no true anagnorisis for Brutus because he is an honorable man and he thought that by killing Caesar it would better Rome. So he didn't really do anything wrong. Yet he does regret killing Caesar later in the play.

Catharsis -
After Caesar's death, the audience feels feelings of sorrow towards Brutus and feels sorry for him because of the decisions he made. The audience is purged of their negative feelings of sorrow during humorous times.

Caesar review: Discuss tragic hero, hubris, anagnorisis, perepetia, hamartia, and catharsis.
