| #3 Guilds Journal Entry- Please share similarities and differences of the "Guild" tradition of the Middle Ages with workers unions in America of the 21st century. Guilds from old and modern times may be simial are different in some ways that we think of them. Guilds in the middle ages were basically what controlled the trade in a town. Merchant guilds usually regulated prices, quality, weights and measures, and business practices. The power of the guilds was absolute in their domain, and to be expelled from a guild made it almost impossible to earn a living. Guilds today are somewhat similar. Both old and modern guilds are usually what you have to get through to make your own practice, so in some ways guilds can be a bad thing. But, both also have benefits. The guilds would protect you in a way and make sure that you received health benefits or financial aid. Guilds today are more optional depending on what areas are of interest, for example: firefighting, art guilds, medical guilds, engineering guilds, etc. Many people of today do not need to be in a guild for social or economic reasons, or just to get a job. This is the main difference between guilds of then and now. #4 Democracy *Journal Entry-Democracy, human rights, and equality are social and political concepts that have been, and are evolving in our world. The Great Charter of King John, or the Magna Carta was one of many stepping stones leading toward modern day democracies. Please go to page 212 in your text, and describe in a paragraph how this document will impact the concept of equality in the future governments of England. Democracy, human rights, and equality are social and political concepts that have been, and are evolving in our world. The Magna Carta has helped to define history and types of government for many years. This document set in place a set of limits and checks on the king or ruler so that they could not overpower or use extreme forms of governing a nation. This Great Charter has lead to government used by the US today. Today we have a system of checks and balances that uses the same concept that the Magna Carta did in the dark ages. Our system is made up of three branches: the legislative, executive, and judicial branches that are the legs of our government today. Without a form of checks on the ruler of the government, nations could be in serious trouble. The Magna Carta basically helped influence and impact the concept of equality in the future governments of England. |

How might these apply to the Church in the 1500's? The two roots in the words Protestant Reformation are: Protest- protesting against the Catholic Church and Reform want to reform the evil practices of the Catholic Church. The Church in the 1500s corrupt, so Martin Luther wanted to put end to this. He had different beliefs such as: Luther protested that some of the clergy were selling indulgences without making clear that people must also be sincerely repentant for his sins. Luther is Catholic, which adds support for his argument. Luther said that Christ paid for the sins for all mankind and its an insult to pay money to get out of the sin. | # 7 Glorious Revolution Journal Entry- Please explain what led to the The Glorious of Revolution of Britiain in 1688. Also, share specifically how this impacts democracy in Britain as well as the western world. James the II tried to flee from England with the Great Seal of England and he wanted to destroy the way of government in England. He tried to destroy the writ of scheduled Parliament by flame as well as trying to sink the Great Seal of England by casting it into a lake, but both times were not prosperous. He did not want to have a scheduled Parliament and he thought that the government actions in England would be paralyzed while he was gone. James II was later caught by fishermen, and this miracle later led to the way in which the Revolution in England came about in the year 1688 and was known as the Glorious Revolution. Another name for the Revolution was the Bloodless time because while Mary and William took succession, it wasnt that bloody of a time. The Glorious Revolution put a system of check and limited power on the monarchy and allowed the cabinet and parliamentary democracy to come forth. This new was of government brought about the English Bill of writes to protect human rights and to prevent excessive fines or punishments. These rights that were written down in the English Bill of Rights were later used to help Americans form their own Bill of Rights to protect the liberties and rights of the people in our Federal Constitution today. |

| #8 Glorious Revolution, Declaration of Independence, and The Declaration of the Rights of Man November 18, 2004 Journal Compare/ Contrast i.e similarities and Differences of The Glorious of Revolution of Britiain in 1688 vs Declaration of Independence vs Declaration of the Rights of Man Please read the following documents carefully and share the similarities and differences. Also, describe how one affects the other in relationship to the evolution of democratic principles in Western Civilization. For example, how did the Glorious Revolution of 1688 impact the American Revolution, and the American Revolutionary experience impact the French Revolution? The Glorious of Revolution of Britain in 1668, Declaration of Independence, and the Declaration of the Rights of Man can all be compared and contrasted in different ways. All of these documents can be found to contain words and laws that pertain to obtaining rights and protection by the government. All three were used to establish human and natural rights given to all men and also so that if a government went to extreme, the people could abolish it and build up a new one. Most of these documents were made to keep the ruler of the country or nation from being to powerful and being an irrational leader. All of these have common values that were established and were made for the nation as a whole, they were a type of constitution, which in turn helped to work for the majority of the nation. These three documents actually are very different for some reasons as well. For one, the Glorious Revolution was made to take away some of King James II power because he was an irrational leader and the people who made this Revolution happen wanted to establish peace. With the Declaration of Independence, which was written later, it was mainly to state that all men are created equal before God and country. Many thought that people should all have the same natural and born rights and privileges, yet other obligations were needed to meet each individuals needs. The Declaration of the Rights of Man was given to allow all men to be equal before the government. But, in fact women did not receive many of the equality rights such as voting, becoming a leader of an organization, etc. So, after all, every document had a specified focus that was given for the time and place in the there and now so all were different according to the needs during that time. Because the Glorious of Revolution of Britain in 1668, Declaration of Independence, and the Declaration of the Rights of Man all in a way correlate, we can say that they each tie into one another. For example, the Glorious Revolution came about in the same form as the Magna Carta because the leader became too extremist, the Magna Carta helped to shape the English Bill of Rights, which later led to the American Bill of Rights, which in turn led to the Declaration of Independence of our nations Federal Constitution. Another way we can focus on it is by Going from the Glorious Revolution all the way to the American Revolution. The Declaration of the Rights of Man was made in correlation with both of these because it basically restated the basic rights that all mankind should share together. In conclusion, although these documents be alike or different in many ways, they can often be linked to one another to form and shape that British, American, and other nations that we have learned to love today. |
