| #1: Major Crisis in the World | ||||||||||
| Killing, bloodshed, conflicts, terrorism, and abuse are all words that we can relate to war and horrible consequences due to conflicts across the world. I believe that a main factor that contributes to these aspects is different perspectives on religion. Throughout history we can see that some of the bloodiest or biggest conflicts came to pass due to religious clashes. Adolf Hitler dealing with the Jewish people made this concept visible for people all across the globe. He became a radical dictator and produced mass destruction all out of in-toleration for another race and religion. Another example includes the Turk and Christian outburst; again, the death in this situation is due to the same conflict and intolerance of religious beliefs. Lots of times, the conflict is between a religion and a group that attempts to obtain equal rights and protection under law. In the past, this often involved discrimination on the basis of race, or gender, but most of all over religion. This may be because a group believes so strongly in their faith that they cant accept other people believing a different way. Many countries even base laws and ruling around religious belief. Throughout the centuries of time only a few years have been without war across the globe. If tolerance of beliefs started to get rooted in peoples minds and ideas, maybe this ordeal may become less horrible. You think that our generation would learn a thing or two about how wars get started from examples of previous generations. But, as we all know religious clashes are still a major world problem that we have to learn to deal with. Today there are still many serious conflicts over religion that are driving people to war or mass destruction. Some examples include the Arab-Jew problem in Jerusalem, or the genocide going on in Sudan. The basis of all these problems is due to intolerance of other groups and religious beliefs. Whether this is due to minority religions or agitation, these reasons are why I believe that religious clashes and conflict is the biggest threat to our world today. | ||||||||||
| #2: Democracy | ||||||||||
| I think that in the world today the best choice of government would have to be a democratic form of government. Although this type of government may have some disadvantages such as dumb people voting for dumb reasons, wrong decisions being made, or people electing a leader that wont be a benefit to the whole country, I believe that a democracy is the way to go as far as government. There are also many advantages that a democratic government can have. Some of these things include: being united as a people, electing our own leaders, deciding and voting on our own laws, and making the best decisions for the country as a whole. When compared to other forms of government such as a monarchy or a dictatorship, I think a democracy still comes out on top. This is because a monarchy has leaders that arent elected by the people, this can cause uprising and clashes between different groups. A monarchy also has set laws and the people dont get to make most of the decisions even if the laws do not benefit the country as a whole. In a dictatorship it is almost worst than a monarchy and the people dont have much say at all. This is another reason that democracy in a country such as the US is so good. We as the people of the country, aside from electing our own leaders and voting on laws, we can also remove a leader from office if they have gone overboard with their choices or decisions. In a democracy we can make and choose laws or leaders that will benefit the majority of the country since everyone has a right to vote. This ensures that the rules and guidelines are constructed to benefit the country and make it prosper. A democracy also allows the people to have civilized petitions or debates on issues. In conclusion, I believe that a democracy is the right choice for government structure today. Response to Melina Herrey I would have to agree with Melina when she states that democracy is a great type of government for the people. For example, a monarchy may be a sense of unity by being governed by a king or queen, but I think that a president or elected leader for the ruler of the country better displays what the people believe in and the president represent what the country wants to stand up for. People being born into a political position on the other hand, simply is a representative leader of the country in some areas. I also agree on the fact that a democratic form of government should be established in most countries around the world. This may be because a democratic form of government is so organized. For example the President may want to pass a certain law, but if the Congress doesnt think that it will be a good asset to the country they can object to it or refuse to make it a law. A democracy in a country such as the United States helps to recognize the countrys needs. As Melina said by electing who we want to represent us, the majority of laws or votes submitted by congress will be what the majority of the people in that country want. Another point that I believe to be true is that when people are given the right to vote, many do not exercise this right. If most of the people dont vote then the laws may not be in favor of most of the people. This statement also works the other way, I think that countries with a democratic government should really take advantage of having the freedom and ability that comes with having a democracy. In turn, our country can have an impact on others and maybe the world may see that a democratic government really isnt that bad and that it is more of a benefactor than an inefficient form of government. |
