Some questions such as �Can people rebel against the government?� 2. People thought a lot on natural rights. Locke thought people cive up a certain amount of liberty for security and protection of rights and benefits. He said these rights were from nature not God. Basically: people can rebel against any government that is NOT protecting their rights. He thought we need to give up some of our rights to some degree so that there is still some order. a. Natural Rights: have the chance of obtaining life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness 3. Montesquieu believed that liberty is natural law. Thought that everyone should be born free. Montesquieu also agreed with Locke and thought there should be a limit on the government by using 3 different branches. He thought rulers usually want to increase their own power but should be kept on a check and balance system which will not allow the leader to have absolute power. 4. Strengthening Germany Nationalism � nationalism is pride and love in one�s country People gave rations to help their country Adolph Hitler had pride in his nation but it was for the wrong causes THE BIG IDEA Germany became the leader of industry in Europe in 1871. Starts in England which is the hub for industrialization. There are people who gave away the industrial secrets of England to Germany and France and other Western European countries. The Germans take industrialization to another level that the Brits did not. The Germans make big factories and railroads. They used average workers than skilled specialty craftsmen. Has a lot of coal and iron. Had a population boom which allowed Germans to work and but products. Chancellor Otto von Bismarck wanted to keep France weak, creates alliance with Austria and Russia. He wants to eliminate the Catholic church. Wanted to build a powerful economic system and didn�t like socialism. Capitalistic system is what he wanted. William II (Kaiser) wants total power, remove free enterprise. He thought freedom of thought as threatening and as a weakness. Stopped all moves toward democracy.
