Willis
Wild Wild West
USA, 1999
[Barry Sonnenfeld]
Will Smith, Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagah, Salma Hayek
Action / Sci-Fi

Despite being helmed by a big name director and featuring an allstar cast this really was a hell of a stinky film. Poor in idea and execution director Barry Sonnenfeld (Men In Black, Get Shorty) fails completely to make any sense out of a disastrously ramshackle script and ends up confusing the audience more than anything else. Will Smith and Kevin Kline fail totally in the humour stakes, Salma Hayek shows once again that she CAN'T ACT, Kenneth Branagh and Smith engage in an annoying insult-o-fest and I still can't see what the point of it all was.

Branagh wants to take over the newly-founded US, fair enough you say, but what was the point of the foreign ambassadors and where did they go exactly? Why did he annihilate his allies with a big tank? Most horribly of all though, why oh why oh why did both Kline and Smith dress up as women? It wasn't funny in the
Carry On films and that was 20 frickin years ago. It's just embarrasing now. I didn't even get any sense of brainless enjoyment out of it and if it wasn't for the fantastically realised giant mechanical spider I'd have no choice but to give it one star. It really is that bad.
