Adding an aftermarket steering wheel is a pretty simple, straight forward job depending on the brand that you decide to purchase. There are many flavors out there to choose from.  Unfortunately, because we're talking about Saabs, your choice will be somewhat limited by manufacturer. The critical part in choosing a steering wheel is finding a hub adapter to accommodate the steering wheel you purchase. Personally, I think you should buy the hub adapter before you buy the steering wheel if not at the same time. You wouldn't want to have a steering wheel you can't use.  Get the picture.  Hub adapters are normally priced between 40-60 US$ and comes in hex or penta bolt patterns.  Steering wheels are priced from $50. to a few hundred depending on brand, quality and materials used to manufacture it.

Two of the varieties that our fellow Saabers sport are Grant and MOMO.  Is one better than the other? Well, it is just a matter of taste.  Besides, most wheel designs are shared between manufacturers but labeled by a different name or style number.  At the time I purchased my steering wheel my decision was based on the color scheme of my car's interior and the design of the steering wheel. Others may have based their decision on the way the steering wheel looks or the feels in their hands or just by brand name.

Whatever prompts your decision your choice will certainly be better than what you have now.

Here's the install procedure :

Step1  Removing Steering Wheel

Required tools: 7/8 socket, ratchet w/ minimum 6" extension.

  • First, line up your steering wheel dead center.  If your steering can lock this would be a good place to engage it.
  • Remove the rubber foam pad from the center of the steering wheel, turn the ratchet counter clockwise while using your other arm to resist the steering wheel from turning.
  • Remove the steering wheel, if the steering wheel is hard to come off then slam it inwards with both hands and work it briskly up and down while pulling it outwards.  You will need the nut and washer you removed to secure the hub adapter.
Step2  Adjusting the Adapter

Insert the adapter into the steering column, if it does not go in all the way you will have to make some adjustments.  File, cut or tap in the guide pin at the bottom of the adapter. Wire the positive terminal inside the adapter if is isn't done already. When the clearance is corrected bolt the steering wheel unto the adapter. Make the necessary adjustment to have it dead center. When this is done tighten it up. Don' t forget to put the washer back in or the steering will come off in your hands doing 90 on the freeway or carving the canyons..

Step3  Putting it Together

Now, I know you didn't put that horn button in?! Take it back out!  I know you couldn't wait to see how it looks could you.  You won't need all the wiring they supplied with the kit so you can save it for another project. Connect the ( + ) from the inside of the adapter and the  ( - ) from the adapter ring to the terminals on the horn button, pop in horn button on the steering column.  Okay, honk if you're horny!
