Driving after that first look. It
took about three hours to drive down to Sonora from Tahoe. It's a fine drive,
over Luther and Carson Pass, down Highway 89. The waters were running, but there
was still plenty of snow on the ground. Those hours behind the wheel of the Waggoneer
were spent trying to imagine just what I'd find at the other end of the quest.
Mike had told me that he didn't think it wise to try to drive the car back to
Tahoe, which hinted at a fairly funky condition. I'd steeled myself to be disappointed,
imagining a rusted hulk that had been brush painted and dented fore an aft with
a ballpeen hammer. On one hand I wanted circumstances to talk me out of getting
yet another Saab. On the other had we were talking a running two-stroke bullnose
Saab! I wanted it. I wanted out. I needed to know. Following sketchy directions
I finally turned the corner and there it was. At first glance the car looked
quite presentable. After owning the car for a week or so the mist has cleared
from my eyes and I can see the bondo and the dings...still I'm very pleased.
