Notes on the booklet, 'Zenith Camp -- Circle Songs'

Song #6 -- The text as sung by Santa Fe Zuleika, which is closer
to Rumi's text, is:  'Back, back, whereever you are / This caravan
is not of despair / Although you have broken your vows / [ perhaps
] a thousand times.'

The word 'perhaps' was not in Rumi, as far as I know, and seems to
have been added by Zuleika only to fill out the rhythem.
                                        
I am not clear how PeaceWorks can claim a copyright on this song.

Song #13 -- 

The text, given here in rather garbled transliteration, is from
the pentultimate lines of Book 4 of the Biblical writing (Ketuvim)
'Lamentations', attributed to Jerimiah.
In Jewish tradition, The Book of Lamentations is read on 9 Av,
which falls during Zenith Camp.
The Shabat following 9 Av is Shabat Nachmu, the Shabat of
Consolation.  R. Shlomo Carlebach's tape, Nachmu Nachmu Ami, is
particularly appropriate here.  It is available from Ben_Zion

I don't have a copy of Lamentations at hand, so I can offer only a
crude transliteration:

Hashivenu, hashivenu, [ HaSHEM ] elecha.  Ve haShuva [ not
v_nashuva ]  (v_haShuva).  Hadesh (hadesh) yamenu k_kedem.

The translation is:
Let us return unto the LORD your G_d, and (there will be ) return

 [ ie, return to "that old_time religion" and there will be a
return from Babylonian exile to the land of Israel -- as indeed
there was 70 years later, when Assyria conquered Babylon and the
Emperor, Xerxes if I recall, allowed the Jews to return, though
only a broken remnant did so.l ]

Renew (Hadesh, not Kadesh, which would translate 'sanctify' ) our
days as of old.  ('as of old' not 'of old')

In PVK's version, which is not the popular version, as presented
here, bar 8 would be an F_natural, not an F_sharp.  Bar 9 is
F_sharp.
And in PVK's version, the first notes in bar 6 and 7 are simple
quarter_notes, not dotted quarter nots.  And the C_shart in bars
14 and 16 would seem an unnecessary embelishment.

Song 14 -- 

I doub that this song is authentic.
The words as written here are simply, 'Havenu shalom aleichem'.
My Hebrew is very poor, but I don't think 'Havenu' is a Hebrew
word.   So it would be, 'Shalom aleichem alenu, shalom aleichem,' 
And even that construction would noot seem to be part of written
nor spoken Hebrew, since the 'alenu' is redundant.  Also, 'alenu'
is 'unto us'.

Song 16 -- 

Hineh:  Ma tov, v' ma naim, shevet achim gam yachad.

Behold -- How good, and how pleasant -- brothers dwell in unity.

Song 17 -- 

As I recall from hearing this song at the Abode, the first phrase
is:  ''tis the gift' not ''tis a gift'

Song 44 -- 

This is a song by R. Shlomo Carlebach.

I would polish the words to:

Return again, return to the lands of your soul.
Return to what you are, return to who your were, return to where
you are born and reborn again  --- 

but 'return to the home of your soul' is also good
I do not know what R. Shlomo's precise wording was

Song 47 -- 

I do not recall this as a tune of R. Shlomo Carlebach.
Ben_Zion Solomon , at Moshav Mevo Modi'in, would know whether it
is or is not.
With only a few exceptions, one cannot attribute words of songs to
R. Shlomo Carlebach, because he simply set words from the liturgy.

Song 48 -- 

I heard Susie Harrison, zl'b,  sing this song at New Buffalo, from
songs she sang or taught at the Dana Hali school in Taos:

The verses, as I imperfectly recall, were:

The LORD said to Noah, there's gonna be a floody floody -- (bis)
Get them elephants / out of the muddy muddy , children of the LOR

The animals they came in, by ones and two's_y two's_y's (bis)
elephants and kangeroo's_y 'roo's_y's
children of the LORD


It rained and poured for forty days_y days_y 
Almost drove the elephants crazy crazy
children of the LORD         

There's at least one more verse, which I don't recall

This is a Shaker song, as far as I know.
I heard it at the Abode.

Song 62 -- Yedid Nefesh -- 

This is of course from the erev Shabat liturgy, and is found in
all Shabat sidurim.
