I assert no claims upon this nor any other RSC material that I have worked on, but acknowlege that others may have asserted, or may assert, such claims. I ask that anyone using this material note its docname as Source This cluster of transcripts includes Ms. AA7, AA6, AA5 , AA4, AA3, AA2, AA1 Ms. AA7 is December 1974. All the rest of this cluster is Summer 1973. Transcriber not identified. Apparently the same transcriber for all Mss. in this cluster. That inventory is included on my Website, www.geocities.com/sa73122a This manuscript I xeroxed from the BZ Collection, which he copied from the HH Collection, which I duplicate of a part of the Witt Collection. I think Hatzkala (one of the H's of HH) had it first, from the HLP. ------------------------------------------------------------------ EDITORIAL NOTES; This will be a verbatim input of the transcript, but in several respects not a literal one. I will vary puncuation ad lib, to try to bring out the logic of what RSC is saying. I will vary ad lib the transliteration of Hebrew words that are given in English transliteration. For Hebrew words given in Hebrew script, I use my transliteration system, which is case-sensitive such that each Hebrew letter is represented by only one possible Roman letter or letter_pair, and where vowels arae inserted ad lib. I follow the usual equivalents for nedkudot (Sfard, ie Israeli, not AshkeNosey ) when those are given -- and so I use T not s for Tav. (Where tet is t , lower- case). The transcriber uses Hebrew script rather than phonetic transliteration for RSC's Hebrew words. Unfortunately the transcriber sometimes mis_writes the Hebrew script letters, and sometimes mis-spells the Hebrew words, and does not add nekudot. And anyhow, I can barely read Hebrew script letter-by-letter. So in short, if the Hebrew words on this input are incomprehensible, go back to the Ms., or to the tape if it exists. I do not now insert CR's to coreespond to the line-endings of the manuscript, it's too much hassle. Belatedly, I go back to my practice of cue_ing each footnote (by sa) to he line(s) of text (by RSC) upon which it is a comment, often an intolerably irreverent one. (Caveat Tabbycat, Caveat Blackhat, ie, Snias Alert, Shtuyot alert) I am inputting this cluster of Mss. in reverse numeric order -- the first I input was AA7 . So my introductory notes are modified in reverse Ms. numeric order. ----------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================ START INPUT OF PAGE 1 OF RSC MS. AA2 Summer 1973, YRUSheLAyIm, Tuesday, Tape 2 Side 1 This apparently follows immediately after RSC Ms. AA1 This is a little bit Reb MENDDELE, CHERNOBLE So it says here: The first thing is, a person has to know and to believe, that there is one G_d, who created everything there is, (aa2-1x) and higher worlds endlessly. (aa2-1a) 'HE' fills all the worlds and 'HE' is hiding within everything. 'HE' is below the world, 'HE' is above the world, and 'HE' is the life of everything. If (G_d forbid) (aa2-1a1) G_d would take away 'HIS' life from the world, there would be no world. And therefore a person has to know every second that the life I have is just from G_d. You know what the whlole thing is of inhaling and exhaling. (aa2-1b) G_d could have just created us, give us life, and that's it. Because the truth is that, the Gemorah says, you have to realize one thing: That when a person is in this world, is living in this world, basically its very hard for the soul, you know, you feel like a stranger here. You want to run away, right. So each time you take a breath, you inhale, hut lets say your're holding out for 40 seconds, just had enough. (aa2-1c) (aa2-1c) If I recall, it can be rather dangerous to hold your breath too long. Your soul wants to run away. So you exhale. My soul is going out of me, right. (aa2-1d) But then my ---------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 2 OF RSC MS. AA2 soul realizes, G_d really want me to be alive in this world, so it comes back. Its, you know, like every split second your soul wants to leave and your soul comes back. Inhaling, exhaling. (aa2-2a) So this is [ was ] a very deep secret. And a person has to know: Each time I'm inhaling, literally G_d give me back my soul. (aa2-2b1) [So this is a commentary on the first morning bracha: Sh_Ha_HaZRDTa BI NiShMa_Ti B_CheMLaH who has returned to me my soul with mercy (Metsudah Ashkenazi: "for sou hafe restored my soul with mercy") But you have to realize one thing, in a very deep way, this is vey heartbreaking (aa2b2) [ ain't everything except the price of eggs ] , he says: (G-d forbid) If you do something wrong -- Imagine: I'm sitting here and I'm saying evil things about another person (aa2--2c) My soul can't stand it, right. (aa2-2c1) So then I'm exhaling right, and my soul is litrally begging G_d to do me a favor, I just don't want to go back. (aa2-2d) [OK: One of the first things I recall hearing RSC saying, this would be at the first Ruach Camp, on the Abode Campgrounds, is: someone asks you, what do you want to do on earth, and you say, oh, just hang out with the boys, have a few beers, maybe watch some TV. And your soul says, for this you drag me down out of heaven? [ Cf. PVK on the Elusian myysteries, Zenith lectures et. al. ] I don't want part of this. So then, so_to_speak, G_d is persuading the soul, please do ME a favor, you know, give him another chance. And I keep on saying bad things and the soul is momish begging G_d please you know, I want no part of this. (aa2-2e) So a person who really knows the truth where he is at, what his life leval is, you hae to realize how much so_to_speak G_d has to persuade his soul to come back to him each time, not only when he sleeps, each time (aa2-2f) ----------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 3 OF RSC. MS. AA2 you take a breath. And therefore he says something even deeper. You know, every time, listen to this: Each time I exhale, so my soul is out of me, right. [wrong, but why quibble. ] My soul becomes complete again. And then my soul goes back into me and I cripple my soul. Cripple my soul with my own hands. [ "Planet Earth -- Love it or Leave It "] And then my soul goes out of me and G_d fixes my soul again. This goes on endlessly in the most unbelieveable way. So if a person just thinks of how much goodness G_d is doing with him, all day long, forget abou all the good things that are happening. Just inhaling and exhaling. The process of inhaling an exhaling. [ Toxing and Detox, "Systaole, disatole, spokes of a wheel" (Hart Crane) ] So he says, if you think of that, then you have to know something very strong. He says that: The closest closest, the closest thing to your soul is your thoughts. As much as you cripple your soul when you do wrong, or you speak wrong, but when you think bad thoughts you're choking your soul, right. Crippling it, choking it. (aa2-3a) [Nu, so Hire the Handicapped. ] He says something very deep: [Scuba, Dude] There is such a thing as crippling the life of the soul; and there is such as thing as crippling the the light of the soul. When you do wrong or you speak --------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 4 OF RSC MS. AA2 wrong you just cripple the life of the soul, because the soul is such a holy flow you know. Just momish a part of G_d, loving and just so holy. But when you have evil thoughts, its like really taking out the light of your soul, G_d forbid. (aa2-5a) But then he says: The truth is, if G_d forbid you fall down to the lowest, if for one secocnd you would just stop, and momish think there is ONE G_D who is giving me life, then ,he says, in a split second suddenly your thoughts would become so clear and your mind will be so pure and your light will shine again. He says, The most important thing: You have to watch your thoughts, watch your eyes, and watch your speech. (aa2-5b) And as much as when I'm breathing I'm inhaling, you know, my breath has to reach my toenails, right, othersie I'll be dead. [ Well, that does depend somewhat upon the colour of one's nailpolsih. ] I have to realize each time time I'm taking a breath, that momish G_d's holiness is completely into me, you know. Cause you know, sometimes we always think of holy, kvais, its momish getting right into me. And then he says: And everything I do has to be, you know, very strong, you know. OK, I'm living right. I'm inhaling, I'm momish getting G_d's life -------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 5 OF RSC MS. AA2 into me. My soul into me. But then the strangedt thing: When I utter words, even good words, but they're really not with the light of my soul, like I'm making a thick wall between my soul dand the words I utter. (aa2-6a) Because if my soul would be free into me, or why don't I daven with my whole heart. Because me NESHAMA definitely wants to doven. My neshama, my soul definitley has no walls between me and other people. So the saddest thing is, that: Im inhaling, I'm getting moimmish G_d's light into me, and then in the middle I build little walls beetween me and my own soul. (aa2-6b) Then he says something very deep: [ Does anyone ever say anything plesantly shallow in hassidus?] When you talk to your friend, if you would know that your soul is talking to the other person's soul, how could you not talk from the depths of your soul. (aa2-6c) Therefore he says: Please leave all your atupidity and all your evil and begin to serve G_d. [ That kind of sweet-talk won't get you much, Klutz. ] Correct your yesterdays. Correct all the evil words you were saying. [ Some say, Israelis are rude. But I say, Good heavens no, nothing could be farther or further, whatever, from the truth -- why, the very idea could only be entertained by an absolute idiot. ] He says, to correct -- listen to this: [ The chevre used to always wear headphones and constantly listen to Jefferson Airplane on MP2's -- this was 30 years before MP3's were invented -- but whenever Reb Shlomo would say, "Listen to this", they would take off the headphones for at least one sentence, and at most one paragraph. So you do so too, Moe. Or at least your video_goggles.] He says: To correct your speech, learn a lot, you know. Utter words, holy worlds. To correct evil deeds, (aa2-6d) give a lot of charity. Give a lot of TzDaQaH. (aa2-6e) Bring a ------------------------------------------------------------------ START PAGE 6 OF RSC MS. AA2 lot of peace into the world. To correct your thoughts, its only Shabos, Shabos, this is the day. Everybody knows that the first word of the Torah is B_ReAShIT . And the Zohar Kodesh says BReAShIT at the beginning, B_ReAShIT is actually a combintaion to two words, which is YReA ShaBaT -- fear [ or better, translated yira not as 'fear', but as 'stand in awe of' } Shabas. (aa2-7a) (aa2-7a1) [ OK, this word-play is supportable, though you maybe have to cheat a little to prop it up. First of all, in Hebrew, only Cosonants -- which includes Aleph and Ayin, but maybe sometimes not Vav nor Yud -- are significant. The nekudot ain't. So Bereshit comes down to BRShT . OK, now Bereshit translates 'in the beginning' -- so the B is not really part of the word, its just an affixed Adverb, meaning, 'In'. So now the essential word is just RAShT -- Resh -- Aleph Shin-- Tav. So ok, what of YiRA Shabat -- Yud if often a future_tense prefix, So if we drop it out, we get RAShBT But I don't see how you can get rid of the Bet -- it ain't adverbial in ShaBaT So if this is Kabalah, count your change, Stephen Strange ] [ This is Dr. Stephen Strange, from Marvel Comics ] Or maybe you want to play Gematria, so you don't need a matchup, only an anagram, so the B in Shabat is the B in Bereshit, only moved from front to middle. So then go back to Yehiva and major in Scrabble. ] That measns all week long, whats the first thing -- if a Yidala will ask you, what's the first thing you have to to. I have to be momish, stand in awe of ShaBaT. (aa2-7b) (aa2-7b) (aa2-7b1) [ That's ok, as some say, count the days as the preceed or follow Shabat. And that's ok, because the Psalm of day clearly links both Thursday and Friday to Shabat --] Gvalt. Shabos is coming, Gvalt. You have to realize one thing: BRAeSHiT at the beginning was said Saturday night [ transcriber notes that 'Saturday night' is maybe a mis-hearing of 'in the night' , But the latter don't fit good, Maude, so I go for the former, Farmer ] right [, Mite] after ShaBaT. That means from one seocnd after ShaBatT is over till the next Shabos you have to be constantly in awe of shaBaT. So Reb MORDCALA [ CHERNOBLE_R, I assume , but don't blow your stack, Mac ] says like this: Because a person has to be completely covered with awe and fear [ and a bit of Iodine 99 and Uranium 292 too ] all the six days of the week and worry, how will I be able to enter next Shabos. (aa2-7c) Because the truth is, all I have is from last Shabos. But the six days of the week are given me to prepare myself for the next Shabos. (aa2-7d) Now listen to this: (aa2-7e) (aa2-7e) [ To be serious for 2 seconds: 'Now listen to this' seems to me an echo of the shipboard call, especially on military ships, from the WW II era, 'Now here this'. RSC came to the USA as a child, I assume by ship, and I would assume tht was his first ship trip, Maybe even it was a military vessel. And a child can be darned impressionable. ] Everyxbody knows there is ShaBat ALIYON and Shabat TKTO . there is is a high Shabos and lo0w Shabos. The low Shabos is called Mikro Kodesh, MiQRO QoDeSh --------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 7 OF RSC MS. AA2 that means you have to call the holiness and ShaBaT ALIYoN, the high Shabos, is called QaDoSh QDoShiN , like the holy of the holy. He says: !Because the low Shabos is that you eat on ShaBaT, you drink, you're not working. Because all week long you're working and you're making the world better.! (aa2-g1) (aa2-g1a) (aa2-g1) I goofed my numbering system, so I have to call this page g, not 7. because I skipped a page number back a ways And then ShaBaT HaKaTaN means, the low Shabos is, you stop from working and momish peaceful, right, You eat and you sleep. Very peaceful. That's the low ShaBaT. But then there is a high Shabos. The high Shagbos is -- ok, so he says like this: ShaBaTTKTN is, anything which has to do with this world. Which is still connected, even while I'm not doing it, lets say on ShaBaT I'm not doing work, right. That means I'm in this world but I'm not working, right. I'm eating. I'm in this world, right. But then there is such a thing as ShaBaT ALIYoN, the high Shabos, I'm out of it completely, right. I'm not even in this world. On another world. So he says: The higher your ShabAt HaKaTaN is -- listen to this; this is very beautiful. You can prepare yourself for the ShaBaT HaKaTaN. I can prepare food for ShaBaT, right. I an stop working. The ------------------------------------------------------------------ START PAGE 8 OF RSC MS. AA2 ShaBaT TKTaN [ I think the first letter was a script Tav, not a Heh. Yup. And anyhow it never had a chance of being a Heh, only a Chet, if that So Shabat Ha_Katan is nice idea, but not here ] is in my hands. The ShaBaT ALIYN is a gift. If you remember that: G_d said to Moshe Rabenu: Tell the Yidala I have a gift for them. The gift -- I mean, what's the gift. I'm not working on ShaBaT and I'm eating, I'm rejoicing. Whats there a gift, right. The ShaBaT TKTN this is in my hands, right. That ShaBaT TKTN is in my hands. The low ShaBaT. ShaBaT ALIYN is a gift. So G_d says to Moshe Rabenu: Tell the Yiddala: If you keep the ShaBaT TKTN, and the higher your ShaBaT TKTN is, the higher is your Shabas Elyone. ShaBaT AeLYoN is, listen to this, the Zohar Kodesh says: What is ShaBaT AeLYON. Shabos is the name of G_d -- KhSHBT AMI DQDS BRI HOA who is perfect from all side. AI HOA ShaLOM MKL SLRHI I'll tell you something very very deep you know: Imagine if I know something but I don't know the name of it, I really don't know the thing, right. Sometimes I meet people, and what's a name. Yet and yet there's something very deep. You know a person's name, you may not know anything about them but you know them, right. And if you know everything about them but you don't ----------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 9 OF RSC MS. AA2 know their name, something is missing, right. The truth is, that G_d's name is ShaBaT. That's the real truth. G_d's name is ShaBaT. (aa2-9a) [ Quick, Email the JW's. I mean, one of the essential principles of Judaism is that Supreme Being is Ineffable. (And similarly, the Muslims do not permit depictions of the Prophet, a salaam aleika. A similar taboo exiss is a reduced form in Judaism (Cf. eg the Birdshead Hagadah.) ] REMARK FROM THE CHEVRE: "One of 'HIS' Names." RSC: Yeah, but the top name is ShaBaT, right. (aa2-9b) [ No, not quite right. To set a benchmark: Islam says that there are 99 names of ALLAH. I'm sure 99 is not meant as a numeric value, but rather, to indicate an infinitude. It is analogous to the role played in Judamim by 49 , which is seven seven's, and in a sense represents completeness. The 99 Divine Names in Islam correspond to some extent with the 10 Sfirot in Judaism. Incidentally, there is no hierharchy of Divine Names in Islam. There is an ordering of the Sfirot, with Kether being the top. Keter seems to be the Ineffable, Supreme Being. In PVK's termionlogy, Hochma is surely Pure Intelligence, Binsh is Consciousness. Daat would seem to correspond to the Heraklitean notion of 'Logos'; I don't know how it fits into Jewish mysticism. Chesed, the primary of the -- qualitative one might say -- Sfirot, would seem to have some similarity to the notion, in the Muslim invocation, of 'Er Rachman, Er Rachim.' So it gets complex, without neat inter-religious correspondences. And its not at all clear what RSC is saying in saying that 'Shabat is the chief name of Supreme Being.' It does seem to be an unnecessarily paradoxical way of putting a point that might be set out a lot more clearly. ] Listen, Moshela, I can not argue with holy Moshela, ['cause I got the ague ] but the Zohar Kodesh says ShaBaT ShMO DQDSh BRIHOA "But the name of a foreign G_d is also Shabos." I tell you. It doesn't concern me. Believe me. (aa2-9c) [ And yet when the JWs concluded, however erroneously and also nonsensically -- that is, in Ryle's take on Wittgenstein's sense, however great an a 'howler' -- that they had discovered the name of Supreme Being, they founded a new religion on that supposed premise, and went to jail and worse for it. So you can't say something like that and then just walk away from it. ] Ill tell you somethng. Lets say, for instance, I'm married, right, lets say, I think my wife is beautiufl. Somone comes to tell me a picture his wife is also beautiful, mazal tov. It doen't concern me, right. (aa2-9c1) (aa2-9c1) [ So the point here seems to boil down to: Shabat is of central importance in Judaism. That other religions, notably Christianity, also keep a Sabbath, is of no concern to Judaism. This point can be made by a very roundabout route by speaking of our named and their named for Supreme Being, and then supposing a hierarchy of names, with the name 'Shabat' at the top of lot -- but this is about like sinking an easy shot in the Masters' Tournament by hitting a long drive into the jet stream at such an angle that prevailing winds and a sudden thunderstorm will drop it into the hole. ] QUESTIONER: "But other poeple may be confused by the --- " RXC: No, I'll tell you something like this, I know what you mean [ but do you ]. You're 100% right but also a little bit youre 100% wrong. Because I'll tell you why, listen my friend. I an talk to him straight. You see there is such a thing as being universal and there is such a thing as heing just, in your own right. [ or: 'just in your own, right, Mate?'] Now let me tell you something. Maybe some of you kids remember we were learning that, in a very deep way you know, there ----------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 10 OF RSC MS. AA2 is such a thing as having your own house, then there is such a thing as having a key to the door [ I think is one of the Summer 1973 San Francisco teachings I have already typed from ms. Maybe =sc_aa3_1 ] and then there is such a thing as in the house having one room where you are really alone. (aa2-10a) You see, lets put it this way: Your question is a strong question if you're still on the street, right. !For people who are still on they street who don't know where thy live. So I will them them, your address is Shabos,! (aa2-10b1) (aa2-10b1) This is extremely important. And it is related to the rabinic saying, even souls in hell are let out on Shabat. they'll tell me, there is another god whose name is also Shabos. (aa2-10b2) But right now I'm talking to kids who are already inside of the inside you know. So we lock the door and the world doesn't concern me at this point. You know what I mean. It would concern me maybe at another time, but you're x-raying my heart and I, you know -- I tell you what, I don't know. If you would ask me maybe tomorrow maybe it would bother me you know. But right now, right this minute, it doen't concern me. And I'll tell you something else, in a emergency if you need an answer. You ---------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 11 OF RSC MS. AA2 see everything is real you know. Maybe really G_d's name is Shabos and it came down in differnet ways and some people think it is the name of another god. It doesn't matter to me you know. Listen, people learned a lot from us Yidala, why not learn that G_d's name is ShaBaT you know. Maybe its true, you know. I'm sure it oculd be explaned a thousand ways. (aa2-12ag) But I'm telling you right now at this minute if you don't mind, it didn't bother me you know. Youre with me brother. Ok brother. QUESTION: "Shlomo, Shabos was given to the whole world. Shabos Bereishit BRT BRAeShIT. RSC: Its also true. Youre 100% right. Maybe there is something to it. Anyway Shabos is knowing G_ds name you know. Ill tell you something ver very deep you know: (aa2-12b) Imagine if someone tells me, imagine if I don't speak English (aa2-12c) and someone tells me this person's title is Doctor right, so I can say, Doctor. But I don't know what a doctor is, right. (aa2-12c) And someone will explain to me, you know, what a doctor is, G_d forbid, someone is sick, you know, he can cure them. (aa2-12d) So what happens to me. I knew the [Gnu who a Lllama Farmer garner ----------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 12 OF RSC MS. AA2 -ed] words, the word I knew before, butt I didn't know what it means yet. You know what happens to us on ShaBaT: I know G_d the name, the word I know all week long all week long. But every Shabos something happens to me, I know G_d in a different way. In a compleely different way. Suddnely something happens to me, ShaBaT, momish know there is One G_d. (aa2-72q) This is Shabat Elyon, ShaBaT AeLIYoN . Shabos Elyon is to know G_d within, on a high level, on the deepest level there is. And you see, this is the newness of every -- Shabos Tachtin, TaChTiN (aa2-13ae) (aa2-13ae) [ Gvalt , I think TaChTiN is the word in script I've been chasing through this whole Ms. up to there. Someday, if I can save enough money, I'm going to buy a big stewpot and a good pair of Israeli summer hiking shoes, take half a year off from my job, and go looking for the chicken who invented Hebrew script. ] is every Shabos the same, Every Shabos I don't work. I sleep, I eat, I'm happy. You see, if someone tells yout that every Shabos is the same, they might be a very sweet person but obviously he has never tasted the high Shabos yet. He never tasted ShaBaT AeLYON. Becuse if he would know the Shabos Elyon, then he would know, you know, gvalt. There's a ShaBaT in MISHLE ù [Nu, so what's MISHLE ] which says SheMeN VQART YShMCh LKh and theres a long Tora from Bais Yakov on it that I don't want to go into now. SheMeN , oil, without getting involved, is always ------------------------------------------------------------------ START PAGE 13 OF RSC MS. AA2 a symbol of wisdom, ChoKhMaH you know. QetUReT , incense, is always a symobl of, without getting involved, just accept it the way it is, a very holy word is QeShReSh , being tied to it you know. YShMaH LKah . You kmnow if a peson walks around he has no joy. He's missing one of the two or maybe both. ChoKhMaH is, you know, ALIAHO [ this is maybe Eliyahu? And Eliyahu is maybe Eliyahu Gal-or?] was learing a little bit this morning about ChoKhMaH. ChoKhMaH is knowing things on a different level, you know. You know, its possible to know everything in the world and not know anything. (aa2-13a) (aa2-13a) Little Joe used to say: I tell the Professor, you don't know nothing. Ill tell you you know, iamgine if someone were to tell me how many miles the earth is from the sun. How many millions and, I don't know. Endless miles, right. How many millions of miles. 92 million miles, ok. Better talk to my travel agent, right. (aa2-13b) Imagine I would know exactly. I know the facts. Its 93 million miles. But one sweet thing is missing. First of all I don't know how much 93 is. So what do I know. You see, I can know everything in the world, you know, people, I even know about G_d ---------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 14 OF RSC MS. AA2 I know about Yidishkeit. About Shabos. I'm an expert about everything. But you just don't know the mileage, because you don't know how long a mile is. You don't know numbers. (aa2-14a) ChoKhMaH is, momish, you know what its all about, right. And then this is not enough. You've got to be tied to it, you know. (aa2-14b) You know what it is, you can know all about Shabos. I'll tell yxou something very strong: I once heard in City College [ CCNY, City College of New York City] a professor giving a lecture on "The Sacredness of Phylactaeries." How does it sound to you. [ Like a commerical for safe sex, since you ask. But then, 'phylacteries' is one of my least favorite words. 'Wisdom's Child' runs a close second, but that's maybe mostly beause of my teeth . Or 'tooth', for's'ooth.] The Scaredness of Phylacteries, the holiness of Tfilin, you know. Should have said tfilin, it would have been better. 'Sacredness' sounds so goyish. Should have said holiness. Anyway. And I'm tellign you, my English is bad anyway but I never heard in one hour so many fancy words in my life. Momish he mudt have had this book on syonyms. You talk for one hour how beautiful it is --- [ ellipsis transcription ] You should see how mad he got at me. Hew says to me, 'How an I, where do I have time for such things.' You know he talks for one hour, gornisht, right. What was he missing. The first thing he was missing was his QShRSh, he was not tied to it, right. You can fly areound in great ideas but gornistht. Take the world, you know, on a interantional level. They don't know what peace is. They don't know whats going on. They don't know how previous human life is. But they''re not tied to it, right. You know what we need the most today, you and I, kids: We need Yidala with the KASHRUS , you know. Yidala who's tied to it. Tied to his Yidish kite. [but won't get blow away ] You know, all this talk, I'm proud to be a Jew (aa2-16a) , I'm conscious of being a Jew, I'm completely aware that I'm of Jewish heritage. Of Hebrew heritage. I'm fully aware of the responsibilty towards the State of Israel. (aa2-16b) You know, gevalt you now. It'w kashrus, you know. I want you to know something very strong. [ fresh-ground white horse-radish ] I'll tell you, take Moshela the water_carrier, Haskale the shoe_maker, you know what they have, they had this kashrus. Moshe the water_carrier was tied to his Yiddishkite, was tied to it, right. Tied to it in the most unbelievable way. OK, we've got to learn a little bit more. Just want to learn a few more things, becuse REB NACHMAN 's so precious. I want to be so high when we begin to learn Reb Nachman that we shouild already be by Shabos Elyon when we get there. [RSC teaches from the MEA SHELOACH of the ISHBITZER Rebbe: ] You know, G_d blessed us that we should ber like the stars. G_d promised Jakob that we Yidala will be like the stars. [ but this is the promise to Abraham, not Jakob. ] ------------------------------------------------------------------ START PAGE 17 OF RSC MS. AA2 Listen to this: Here comes Moishe Rabenu and he complained a little bit. He says, Rabenu shel Olam, Master of the Wotld, why didn't you bless us to be like the moon and the sun. Aren't they maybe more important to the world than the stars. So G_d answered him, a way out medrash. There's a midrash, there's a prophecy (aa2-17a) that says: Some day the sun will be ashamed and the moon will be ahsamed, but the stars will not be ashamed. (aa2-17b) And G_d said, didn't the Prophet (aa2-17c) say, I'm in the midst of Israel' and it says 'my people will never be ashamed.' Now listen to this deepest depths. Ok kids, listen to this: What is called momish a real Yidala. Listen to this. Unbelieveable. And which is this kind if Yidala who will not be ashamed on the Great Day. (aa2-17d) Now who is this kind a a Yidala who deosn't have to ashamed every night he looks in the mirror. Or every morning after he brushes his teeth, you know. So my teeth are ok. What about me. What do I look like. So he says: The light if the moon is a great light, right. Imagine if I'm a Jew beause its a tremdous thing, you know. Unbelieveable. It really is, you know. But some day this wont be it. ON the great day this wont be it. He'll be ashamed. But then there is such thing as light of the stars. But there is something much deeper than that. (aa2-18c) Should they go to Yynagogue and become Members. Or where should they go. Sometimes they want to go to Yeshiva, and Yeshiva also is also very holy but this isn't what they're looking for. They're lookign for G_d. Mamish looking for G_d. The thing is like this you know. You know what it is. They are so desperate you know. When I'm desperate I'll eat grass you know. I'll eat the earth you know. The truth is ------------------------------------------------------------------ START PAGE 19 OF RSC MS. AA2 right now we're momish living before the Meshiach is coming. I mean, how much should G_d show us. 'HE''s giving us back the Holy Wall, and the prophets are real, and what's the next step. What can be the next step. (aa2-19a) There can't be anything else. Whats the next step. Obviously we're going higher and higher. The next step is Meshiach has to come and there will be peace in the whole world. (aa2-19b) But where are we standing. Where are we standing. How will we have peace in the world. What are we doing. So the sad thing is, the super_orthodox people don't give a damn if there's peace in the world, (aa2-19c) they only want peace in Mea She'arim, right. AN AUDITOR ACCEPTS THE INVITATION TO RESPOND, BY SAYING: "That's not true." RSC: In a certain way it is, and -- THE COMMENT FROM THE PEANUT GALLERY IS ITERATED, VIZ: "That's not true." Anyway, mazal tov. You know what it is. The thing is that since you make so much inlfuence on people, you know, that another thing that is very important also, we are not dishing out -- you know there is a saying, we have everything in the kitchen and nothing on the menu. We are not giving out our depths. Ok listen, take, take, there's a week, now, what do you call it in the University RESPONSE: "'The Congress of Jewish Studies'" (aa2-20b) OK. (aa21-b) And that Reb Nachman was crazy. So now after you hear this, then you momish become a Yid, right. Becuase first maybe I didn't become a Yid because I thoughz the Baal Shem Tov was a Yid but now I hear the Baal Shem Tov is a goy, I definitely be a Yid. The thing is we're not taking a stamd. (aa2-23a) (aa2-23a) And elsewhere, maybe in Yakar lectures that I have input, RSC says in effect: The goyim come to Israel looking for something real, something spiritual, a way to live -- and we just give them flattery and shlock. The thing is, you know, what we have to do -- maybe, since you are so strong on it, maybe you and I an all the kids here, we momish have to get together and take a stand and tell the world what it is to be a Jew. (aa2-23a1) Sure they're running to Transcendental Meditation because they thnk we have nothing. If we could dish out to the world what we really have, not like Gershon Shalom (aa2-23b) (aa2-23b) [ Gershon Shalom was an academic expert on Jewish mysticism, and was not opposed to it, but was said to have been lacking in mystic sensibility; it is said that hasidim called him 'The Accountant', because he held all the wealth but could make use of none of it. And like you said about Meshiach -- When Meshiach is coming so you have a sense of smell, if its perfume, you know its perfume. And if its not, you also know it. He was so real, everything he did was very very real. Me was momish very. And this is what I get from Shlomo that everything he has taught is so real. That I'm happy to be his student." RSC RESUMES: Reb Nachamn says, this is so deep, it says: V_HaAReTz HDM ReGLiM The earth where I'm walking on is the silence ReGLiM of my feet. Listaen to this, which is so deep: The eart is the silence of my feet. OK again, halacha, you know every law that is law in the Torah is not called law its called halacha, walking. (aa2-232a) (aa2-232a) I took halacha to mean, not 'walking' but 'the way to go' -- as in trail-markers. My image is always of standing on Mt. Madison (I think it was -- the one that's directly up from Crawford Notch) -- above treeline, with cairns for trail-markers, heading toward Mt. Eisenhower. One day there was a late fall snowflurry, and we couldn't see from one cairn to the next, so we turned back. If a person wants to have any any little connection to the Torah, you know everybody talks >I want to be a halach [ sic ] Yid. That's very sweet. Halacha doesn't mean you're --------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 24 OF RSC MS. AA2 connected only when youre doing it, even when your not doing it you also have to be connected. And the not doing can be on the highest level. If you can do better and you didnt do better, thats also halacha yidala but you know at least you should be better. Anyway, so there is two levels of walking, could you maybe close the doors. (aa2-24a) (aa2-24a) [ There is walking into a room, and there is walking in a room: the former is possible only if the doors is open, and only the latter is possible if the doors is closed. ] Anywas listen to this, this is very very deep. It says: The first thing a person has to learn is -- a person has to learn -- [ transcriber has an ellipsis here .. maybe indicating that the Rabbi spaced out .... OK, imagine here, this is really the deepest depth. OK: I want to do tchuva, right. I want to do tchuva so badly. I want to become a better yidala. But now listen to the deepest depths of the world. (aa2-24b) (aa2-24b) [ What follows ain't deep, its academic nit-picking. ] What is my relaionship to G_d till I become better. Imagine, in the middle of the night I wake up and I realize, my whole life I never put on tfilin. Whats my relationsip. I wake up one o'clock in the morning and I can't put on tfilin tŒll, lets say, 4:20. Whats my relationship to G_d from 1 o'clock to 4:20. (aa2-24c) Imagine I realize Ive never sat in a sukah in my life and its just August. What can I do. [ Celebrate the raspberry harvest. ] Sukot is only in October. What am I going to do. So this --------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 25 OF RSC MS. AA2 is what Reb Nachman teaches us, the deepest depth in the world: that while I'm waiting for it, I'm also doing it. (aa2-25a) You do tchuva -- [ Apparently in response to a question for Neila Carlebach: ] -- What to you want to say, daarling? NEILA CARLEBACH: Shlomo, what about the people who really don't knoe what tfilin are. At the Wall [ the Kotel in Jerusalem ] this morning there was a Jewish [ reallly? ] women talking to her little boy of six years old and she said to him, and I quote (!), -- He said, "What is that on the man's head, mommy?" . she said, "That's a quaint and old tradition, dear." What if you don't know what tfilin is. WOMAN [ identified only as such ]: What if you're a women and can't put it on. RSC: Oh, you can also put them on if you're waiting for it. One hundred percent. Listen darling, the truth is, I'll tell you something very deep, you know: Their connection to G_d is that maybe G_d is watiing form them to wake up one morning and tell their child, you know, tfilin is momish way taka holy. There is watiing goiing on. Sometmes its us waiting for G_d, sometimes its us watiing for the right moment, and maybe sometimes its G_d wating for us. But there's waiting going on. So Reb Nachman says: Halacha ---------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 26 OF RSC MS. AA2 is two ways, I'm doing it I'm running: TRANSCRIBERS PUTS RSC's HEBREW IN SCRIPT, MARKING BOTH ATTEMPTS WITH (?)': BQR KHokHI V_RITzN (?Bocher Koach_i V_Ratzon -- In the morning, my strengh comes from Divine Reshut (permission)?) and BOQI BShUQ (? Boch_i B_Shuq , I spend my mornings in the shuk?? ) means I'm looking at myself and I realize how far I am. Its a two way street, going back and foth. Going back and forth. Oy__vay_vay_vay . So then he says: V_Ha_AReTz Ha_DaM ReGL_O (?And the Land is the silence of my feet?) Now listen to this, this is the deepest depths of the world: Is there anybody more silent than the earth. I'm walking on the earth, right. The earth doesn't make any noise. But youre walking on the earth, right. Now listen to this: That literally means you are walking on silence. What are you really walking on. Youre really walking is on silence. On waiting. On waiting and waiting. So now Reb Nachman says: Everybody knows that an Aleph, you have a little yod up there, its a little yod below, and a little vav in the middle. REFERENCE NOTE (aa2-26ar) REFERENCE NOTE (aa2-26ar) [ Larry Kusher (d/b/a Rabbi Lawrence Kushner of Congregation Bet El, Sudbury, Massachusetts ), in The Book of Letters (Jewish Lighs Publishing, POB 237, Sunset Farm Offices, Route 4, Woodstock, Vermont, 05091, Bushie_occupied__USA, 802---457-4000 , 1--800-962- 4544 ), paraphrasing Mishnat Soferim (Mishna Berura / tfilin ), notes: "The letter Alef has in its upper right hand corner a mark which looks very much like the letter Yud and it is the custom of many scribes to place a small thorn or point on its top. This Yud is joined to the middle of the top of the body of the Alef." "The lower left hand marks of an Alef also looks like the letter Yud suspended from the body of the Aleph." ] Now this is one of the top toras of Reb Nachman. Just to give it to you in a nutshell. A person has to know: First, there has to be a little yod up there, a little yod up there, this is my doing. Ah_ha_ha. So he says like this: The aleph, what's the aleph. Aleph is ---------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 27 OF RSC MS. AA2 very deep. Its just way out. Reb Nachman says: The upper yod [on an Aleph] is KeteR -- this is the utmost waiting. The vav in the middle is he says that: When a person is put to shame his face is changing, right. My soul is changing, my heart is changing, all the changes I'm going through. Momish going from top to hbottom, rigbht. Turns me over a thousand times. Thats the vav. And then the little yod below is my silence. So he says like this: This is the LOM KeSheR [ maybe transcription error for: KeteR ] you have to be momish ashamed. very deep. You know friends, I'm just sitting there and wating, and you, you know I went to a lecture last night and I heard a very important thing about Sabath, right, its a ritual and a beautiful thing and I think I like it and I also think its also good for my children, you know, they must have something Jewish to hold onto , because, I don't want to overdo it, goes without saying, but I think the Sabath would be a sweet thing to begin with, buts its only Monday so I'm waiting until Friday night. Just not do anything. Waiting is that I'm turning over a thousand times, I'm so ashamed I didnt keep last Shabos, I'm so ashamed --------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 28 OF RSC MS. AA2 I didnt do it all this time that momish I'm turning over a million times a second. Gevalt. This is the vav. Now listen to this -- Everybody knows that: (aa2-28ag) (aa2-28ag) [ 'Everybody knows' seems to be RSC's quaisi-Talmudic term for 'it is accepted in rabbinic tradition that' ] Vav is AeMt. (Emet, Truth, Ashkenazi pronunciation: enes) (aa2-28bg) Why is vav emes. Vav is [ emet ] because it goes from all the way up to the lowest, right. [ meaning, 'to the lowest, n'est-ce pas' , and not meaning 'to the lower right' ] It has no end. The truth is, a vav has no end. [ Or: The truth is a vav [that] has no end. ] Its just a long line. This being ashamed has to be, has to be, with truth. Listen, I'll say to G_d, you know, I feel kind of ashamed I wasnt a better Jew, but, you have to understand my circumstances, right. Bobkis. (aa2-28cg) You see, one thing is, has to be real. Got to be real. ù Listen, what Reb Nachman says: The whole thing of an Aleph is , there's a little yidala up there, there's my little neshama_la up there. My neshama_la knows so much, my neshama_la, this is my KavoD . This is my honor. This is the deepest depths of me. This is what connects me to G_d. This is higher than the word 'Tchuvas haOlam' [TRANSCRIBER ADDS, '(?)', indicating he/she is not sure that is is what RSC said in Hebrew. ] This is me before I was created. This is me after I [ was ] craeted.. this is the deepest depths of me. What is the deepest depths of me. What is my real connection to G_d. Not the things I did. My real connection to G_d is ----------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 29 OF RSC. MS. AA2 all the things I want to do. (aa2--30a) Listen friends, this is so deep: If someone asks you, what makes you into a Yidala. A Yidala is not what you did yesterday. What makes you into a yidala is that youre waiting for next Shabos. (aa2-30b) What makes you into a tfilin yidala , its not that you put on tfilin this morning. What makes you into a tfilin yidala is, youre watiing with great shame, (aa2-30d) gvalt rabenu shel Olam, this morning I put on tfilin, was nothing. My heart wasnt in it, my soul wasn't in it. I didn't doven properly, but I am waiting for tomorrow. (aa2-30c) But now listen to this: But what is the lower yidala, right. I mean, everyobdy knows an Alepth looks like a little yod, and a vav in the middle. What is the lower yod. The lower yod is -- Listen to this, this in the deepest depths of it. What is my silence. My silence is that even while I didn't do it, I know that depsite everything, I'm a shabus yidala. I'm a tfilin yidala. someone comes to me and says to me, what kind of chutzpah is that you say you are a tfilin yidala. -------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 30 OF RSC MS. AA2 You never put on tfilin in your life. I say no, I'm waiting. I never davened in my whole life, and I will say I'm the greatest dovener in the whole world right. How come youre the biggest dovener in the whole world. You never opened your mouth to doven. I'm waiting. (aa2-30q) Now listen to this. You know what it is: A person has to give Kvt (covet, honor) to G_d, a person has to give Kovet to himself. Waht does it mean to give Kovet to yourself. What does it mean you honor yourself. It means you're in touch with that which is higher than you. You know what it is, its really so deep, friends: Whats happening to most people, they momish dishonor themselves, right. I'll tell you something very strong. How come that most of our children, nebech don't respect their parents anymore. We want so much respect, its just gainischt, right, doesn't go. Because they lost touch, theyre not honoring themselves any more. What does it mean to honor myself. It means to wait, to wait to be better. (aa2-30r) (aa2-30r) Cf. HIK: "Meeting my shortcomings with the sword of self- respect." You know, children are real. And children who have parents all the time to be better, can you imagine, how come YiTzChaQ honored his father so much. ------------------------------------------------------------------ START PAGE 31 OF RSC MS. AA2 I always tell my friends, can you imagine. First of all two things. First of all, imagine if Avraham would have ever said a lie to Yitzhak, he could have never told him, you know, I'm taking you up to the Akeda, because listen father, one time you lied to me. Maybe this is a lie also. So that means Avraham never told him a joke, right. Maybe he was laughing with him because Yitzchaq is laughter. Didnt tell him a joke. Can you imagine how much Yitzchaq was respecting Avraham, that he can tell him, And I want you to know one more strong thing, because Yitzhak was also a prophet. And the truth is, after a prophecy is revealed to one prophet, then all the other prophets know about it also. And the truth is Yitzhak, it says in the Zohar Kodesh, Yitzhak had the [ TRANSCRIBER NOTES -- 'UNCLEAR' ] to G_d, if this is a prophecy, how come I difn't know about it. But this was part of the test. This is part of the test. Can you imagine, but what was so holy about Avraham. I want you to know one thing. The holy SLONIMER said that: Avraham was saying to G_d, ok, I'm not so much of a Jew, but maybe Yitzhak will be an honest Yidala. Can you ----------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 32 OF RSC MS. AA2 imagine how much holy waiting. I want you to know something ver deep, really. The deepest depth of connection between parents and children is the parents want so much to be AMeT YID , emess a yid. [ truly Yehudi ]. But then they're afraid maybe I wont make it. So theyre praying so much, please G_d at least let my children be emes a yid. Children know that. But the first sign is if the parents want their children to be more yidden than they are. Because he wants to be more Yid himself. And by this much I should be more. This mosre this waiting, the [ transcript sic, but maybe 'this'] is the high yod. This is the KoveD. Ill tell you something very deep: If parents, imagine, are waiting to be better parents. You know I am still looking for those parents who would say, I wish I would be a better father or a better mother. You know how much their children know them. Most unbelievable way. But then most parents say, you know, I'm the best father or mother in the world. I hope my children realize that. That's the em,f you know. No ocnnection any more. No KOveD. The higher yod is missing. Its a cut off letter. Have you ever seen a letter where the top is missing. Meaningless. So anyway, this is ------------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 33 OF RSC MS. AA2 (Summer 1973, Jeruslm) what Reb Nachman says, then I'll let you go friends. I'm sorry I kept you so long. Reb Nachamn says, this is the secret of the sun and the moon. Listen to this, this is so beautiful: The sun is the high yod. Its the greatest light in the world. The highest light in the world is, the highest light in the world, I am watiing. Because do you know what kind of a concept of Shabat I have if I'm waiting for the Great Shabos. But there is another little light, the little yod, this is the moon. that even while I'm in absoute darkness, while I never put on tfilin in the world, while I never kept Shabos yet, I still know I'm connected to Shabat. I'm connect to everything holy. this is the moon. Its a sweet little light, it doesn't expell the darkness, its still dark. There isnt much much I can do with it, its just there. Even I never kept Shabos in my whole life, I'm still a Shabos yidala. I'm still a shabos yidala. So therefore the whole thing is that: what's the holiness of us yidala. We yidala, our calendar depends on the moon. Whats the holiness of a yidala. The holiness, how are we able to last so long in exile. Because we have the ---------------------------------------------------------------- START PAGE 34 OF RSC MS. AA2 moon. How does a yidala exist in the darkness of the night. He knows that all the mitzvas, every holy word in the Torah, even if I didnt learn it yet, even if I didnt understand it yet, I'm connected to it. Imagine, take a boy or girl they can't even read Hebrew, and I will ask them, are you connected to every letter in the Zohar. Are you connected to every letter, every word in the Gemora, you will say I can't even read Heberew. It doesn't matter. doesn't matter. Every word, every letter, you are connected to it. Someone will ask you, do you know all the 613 laws. You will say I barely know two or three. The truth is, you are connected to all the 613 laws. Someone will ask you are you connected to Rabbi Akiva, Reb Tarfon, Reb Assi, to Abaya, to Raba. You will say, I never head of them. Doesn't matter. This the holiness of the moon. The holiness of the moon is that I'm connected to everything but you know what the most beautiful thing is. That this holy connection has so much power it makes me new all the time.
