You can't quote them, since, unlike my transcriptions, I have not attempted to make them verbatim, and have not checked them against tape for accuracy. Until about Tape 8 I wrote the notes by hand, and so they are very crude. After that I superimposed within Windows 2000 a DOS prompt running EinsteinWriter, and so my notes are then much more accurate, close to verbatim in some places. But I have not attempted to proof-read them, so you can not take them as verbatim. So they serve as a detailed guide to the contents of each tape. Much more detailed and more accurate than the notes on the Tape box, and than the Sound Crew notes (which I have not yet input). From time to time I blatantly interject my own wording into my paraphrase of PVK's remarks, that should be obvious -- eg, he don't say 'ain't'. (w05n3) As an experiment, they once did retreats at the Abode that were lead by Guides working in tandem with psychotherapists. It was quite successful. And this applies also to ordinary seminars, that is, non-retreat weeks. (w05n4) As noted, this is a whole-week seminar. It will be in silence but with an open discussion on Friday aobut how to apply this to Centers. (w05n6) 10 MINUTES The best way to think of Celestial Energy is as Pure Spirit. It acts as a catalyst that releases latent energy. High voltage / low wattage, and conversely. 3rd Practice -- turn inside, hold your breath, -- not really a void, but a place where everything is inverse -- a 'white hole' (Sibilants are still a problem, but the pace of delivery is now ok) Descending celestial energy shatters one, whereas this revivifies one. the spirit "of the holy Geist" emerging from within and also emerging energy is gradual The exhaled energy is the same energy you inhaled, but quickened. 4th Practice -- ascending/descending, but holding your breath identify with pure spirit when holding your breath 20 MINUTES (4 kinds of Magnetisim) Mangetism of the mind -- HIK says, It is your conviction that vivfies your mind -- whereas doubt drains it. French, "source", a spring bubbling up from the ground ) behind the Universe Ya Aziz -- discovering the glory latent in onself -- "tres intime" - "Dieu est tres pres" 32 MINUTES Ya Batin on inhalation, Ya Salaam while holding breath, Ya Ali on exhalation A practice which PVK rarely gives: directing the exhalation left, right, up, and down 35 MINUTES The pinnacle is Ya Kaher -- an eternal state "this is where the memory of your eternal being comes back -- which is exactly what we mean by 'the Divine Inheritance'" and that is THE breakthrough in a retreat; if that happens to you , it makes your retreat (as in Clint Eastwood, "Go ahead -- make my day" END AT 42 MINUTES This is a very strong lecture, and should be wrapped up for a takeeaway, in an MP3, or maybe a transcription -- TAPE 3 SIDE B Start at 0:30 This is a new topic, viz, 't'is Zikr Zikr occurs in HAHUT Beyond Archetypes, beyond Multiplicity, in Unity Being beyond potentiality Esse beyond Posse Sein beyond Wesen It is ACHIAT (from the Arabic Achad, Cf. the Hebrew Echad ) *"there is stablility to be found in the midst of motion" -- This walking about a circle strengthens one's concentration on the center one is in harmony with the motion of the stars and galaxies one shifts one's attention from the solar plexus to the heart center and also from Bindu in the heart center each chakra represents a different plane The solar plexus is magnetism The heart center, the next floor up in Macey's Department Store on 46th and Broadway, -- the heart center, one plane upwards, is the aura -- (w05n9) The object is to build a temple of light with your aura in motion, into which to invite the Divine Prewsence -- a Temple to afford a protection for sacredness, a protection against sacrilige (PVK elsewhere on these tapes speaks of how dearly if secretly we yearn for the sacred, and how hurt we are by sacrilige -- how vulnerable, really ) One is making a space in oneself, by rejecting the undesirable elements 14 MINUTES This is the first step in the alchemical process -- rejecting the undesirable elements -- (w05n10) In doing the zikr -- after you pass Left Knee, go under the earth, and when you come back up your are passing Right Knee [ Well, this is only time I'v heart PVK say dig a tunnel to do the zikr quicker ] At first you can imagine that you are churnig your magnetic field -- (Churning is how you make milk into buutter, running the stick round and around the wooden bucket , or so I read) Identify with qour magnetic field, not with your body -- The dynamizing of youar magnetic field. Increasing circles, like a spiral moving outwards. Your glance hits that center. Descending head on inhalation. The head rebounds, the energy emerges from the solar plexus -- while one continues to inhale -- 22 MINUTES radiation from the heart Centrifugal spiral emphasized, but there is also a centripetal spiral -- "so there's a pull towards the center" -- Can think of it as a rainbow -- concentric bands of colour that keep expanding Awakening in life -- concenterating on heart center -- rather than samadhi So the heart center is the Holy of Holies -- THIS IS A PRETTY DENSE LECTURE ON ZIKR -- I MEAN, THERE'S A LOT MORE DETAIL THAN ONE USUALLY GETS IN THE ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL PLEBIAN WEEKS Where the reality that you ascribe to the 'higher planes' invests your being at the heart -- [ and that's a fairly simple example of the complexity and subtlety of some of PVK's concepts -- one tends to miss that complexity, anyhow I do, so I tried to bring it out in the rather jive topical headings that I interjected in my Flying Edits of the 1998Zenith tapes] -- this is the Hu -- you hold your breath 28 MINUTES Like receiving Holy Communion -- one is filled with a feeling of the Divine Presence -- the Shekina in Judaism, Sakina in Islam 31 MINUTES We've gone a bit beyond the First Stage now, but there are more advanced stages -- where instead of working with the magnetic field, you work with your subtle bodies. I tuned out Side A -- I should maybe hike down to Olivone tomorrow because the Seder is motzi Shabat -- at the Dan Hotel in Lugano -- I can stay at Bet Avoda Zora, the Chinese restaurant next door, with its animalistic idols in the courtyard -- and slept through Side B -- but shucks, I can tell a good standalone MP3 -- which this is -- even in my sleep. Side A includes Hayal, Mythal, and Malakut Side B includes Jabarut, the Plane of Splendour no doubt all the other planes are there too, precisely wherever they should be. Side B presumably ends after 15 minutes, since the Early AM is only 1 hour, but I nodded enough and it had run to 47 minutes by the time I woke up and realized where I was. We're a cross between a vortex without boundary and a cell that does have a boundary (a semi-permeable membrane). * this is already looking like a good lecture -- Delivery quite ok. So recommended for a standalone MP3. Shift your sense of identity from cell-like to vortex-like From particle-like to wave-like (w05n12) Start with identifying yourself with your magnetic field -- then aura -- then psche -- thoughts -- emotions -- consciousness -- each interspersing with those of other beings * This is an advanced, or anyhow intermediate, practice, for it is an alternation of cosmic consciousness and turning-within consciousness. To hoi polloi PVK taught only one a time. For all that this is tri-lingual, it holds more detail than I have found hitherto II had assumed that from a PVK trilingual lecture one gets only the minimum outline of practices, and that for theoretic detail one must turn back to the one-language classes, especially the Abode and USA English ones of the 1970s -- one must check the collection of the Sufi Center in Boston, since PVK gave many talks in Cambridge, and maybe those were some of his most theoretical -- I do recall one at the Unitarian Church in Harvard Square -- and of course those at Harvard, and also MIT -- ] (w05n13) (w05n14) (w05n15) (w05n16) (w05n17xx) (w05n14) * In Lugano I met a chap yclept Patrick Gerald Woods, aka Arieh ben Joshua, bulododo@hotmail.com , no other namepad given, who advised me to take out hiss with shareware that is easily downloaded. But I hear no hiss on this. Though there is, as on many PVK tapes, some annoying sssibilantss -- ** He told me that he had shared a cave with PVK, whom he knew then as Inayat, without the honorific Pir, nor the name Vilayat, at Camp des Aigles, which he told me was near Gstadd -- I had thought it was in France. He said he used to tie PVK's shoes. He said PVK once remarked to him, with tears in his eyes, "I started too late." Well, this is rather am important remark, if it is truely and accurate recalled, this which I can't evaluate. He was a student of Sri Chinmoy. I told him, as I have elsewhere noted: in the mid-70s, Sri Chinmoy came with his group to Lebanon Springs, or thereabouts, to give a concert in honor of the SO. His choir sang a song set to words of HIK, and as I recalled he played 'cello. Then at the end he and PVK did an improvised duet. I'm almost certain that Michael Horowitz, Foumder of Sacred Spirit Music, taped the whole concert. At the end of their duet, PVK said, clearly moved, "Let the heavens rejoice, for we have made great music together -- Sri Chinmoy and me." PVK continues: In an interconnected state try to walk a bit -- like St. Francis getting into the consciousness of all beings -- LECTURE BREAKS AT 31 MINUTES, TO LET THE CLASS GO OUT AND MEDITATE I hadn't even noticed, but apparently PVK covered all 4 states of consciousness in this talk -- I noticed that the first two, cosmic consciousness and turning_within were presented as a tandem, but I'm not clear how the other two, transcendental and transcendent, fit in to that schema. (w05n18) 2ND MORNING LECTURE -- CONTINUED ON SIDE A OF TAPE Z906L Side A breaks at 31 minutes, to let the class go out and meditate, {w05n18a} Sound resumes with music at 31:40 -- the music being gongs -- a fine recording, that I don't recall hearing, and nicely reproduced on the tape, though one gets only a minute and a half of it -- (w05n19) PVK takes the mic at 33:00 The topic is 'Working with Light' This turns into a 1-hour lecture. So the first lecture, the 4 dimensions of consciousness, was only a half-hour. It would make a zonker of a standalone MP3 I think. Lots of new material in it. This 1-hour lecture on light practices is good enough, with perfectly ok delivery, and touches all bases, so it would make a good standalone MP3 -- for any guided meditation, and I think the semi-guidance of an instruction_in_meditation lecture, aural presentaion, audio, is much better than transcription, since, at least for those who attended his classes, that comes closer to evoking PVK's presence -- and PVK often says, it is the presence of the meditation master, not his words alone, that one needs to learn how to meditate -- which presumably one does by that 'resonance' (of matched attunement) that PVK so often spreaks of. (w05n20) (w05n21) (w05n21) So what I'm saying is that this lecture in light is a perfectly adequate basic standalone, and especially valueable because it's tri-lingual. So in one shot we've given the essential Zenith commmunity PVK's teaching on light. Not that the Polish people don't deserve one too, but PVK lectured in only these three lnaugages. So I guess the Polish people will have to have transription and then translation of that transcription. I guess that Poland will emerge as a major and strong SO center. And maybe then it will bring in some of the other slavic states, or maybe Russia. PVK starts the Lecture on Light: One goes from a base, of absolute radiance, to the summit, of pure intelligence, ie, illumination. These are essentially instructions for meditation, not a guided meditation -- the class, composed entirely of Leaders, who must have a good grounding in meditation, were then expected to out by themselves and, remembering the instructions, do the meditation. But one cannot call this theory, either. PVK continues: It's not eonough to just radiate light, one must be cleaning one's aura -- which requires letting go of resentment and forgoeing guile (w05n22) Thoughts are nebulous when the emotions are not upfront -- (So apparently emotional honesty and emotioanl propriety are pre- requisite to intellectual clarity -- sa) shifting identity from body to aura A 3-fold column in the center of the spine. Sound cut off at 46:51 (w05n23e) (w05n23e) Again, most of the customer copies of most tapes probably lose about 2 minutes of text at the end of each side of each tape, because most customer copies were made on El Cheapo tapes. If an El Cheapo is sold as a 45 minute tape, you get 45 minutes at most., where a namebrand, and the namebarnd Masters Type II that were used, give you at least 47 minutes. If lectures are again recorded on tape -- and there is no reason I can see that they should not be recorded on a laptop DVD-RW, and then the whole week sold as a unit on one DVD-R or DVD-RW -- well, if they are again recorded on tape one must be sure not to use El Cheapo's for the copy, and be sure to instruct the Sound Desk to flip or change tapes before 45 minutes. both Master and G2 (TDK1) run to 48 minutes. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Side B starts at 1 minute -- PVK remarks: It is the all-pervading light light that one should experience in the practice of chargall at 20 MINUTES PVK turns to a discussion of the chakras, with alll those pretty colours PVK stops the lecture short of a discussion of Luminous Intelligence, deffering that discussion to the next day Lecture ends at 27.5 minutes. Sgain, this tape consists of two seperate topics, the first for 30 minutes on Side A, on 6he 4 dimensions of consciousness, and the 2nd, for a total of 45 minutes -- 15 minutes on Side a, plus 30 minutes on Side B -- a lecture on practices with light -- but that lecture must be concluded witha discussion of luminous intelligence, to be given on the following day. (That will be Wednesday 25 July. I go through the AM Session on Wednesday. I'm not clear yet whether amd on which tape this occurs.) Both should be good for standalone MP3s. But they are in different classes. The side A lecture on dimensions of consciousness has new material, and should be transcirbed. And also I can save in Einsein while inputting in Aduacity, without disrupting the inputting. It seems that Audacity now writes in time-delay batches rather than continuously, but that don't make no difference nowhow.] Sound starts after start of lecture -- Detailed explanation of how wazifas signify -- wazifa as a symbol to signify to the unconcious workinh with the four cardinal forms of energy -- -- sitting in nature with everything flourrishing -- Ya Hai -- the cosmic dimension of power, of llife the descent of pure spitit, as a catalyst -- Ya Qdeus turning within -- the fresh energy that revivfies us from within -- Ya Muhiy teluric energy, from bottom of spine or soles of feet -- Ya Muied -- translated as restoring -- a kind of inertia (no, a rebounding to one's stable state) -- when things have gotten out of balance, the earth brings them back into balance -- if you're close to a nervous breakdwon, the best thing to do is do something in nature -- (elsewehre PVK has said, especaially working in the earth, on a small old-style foarm or garden. And to, in a famous annecdoe retold by Sarita Brown, once when someone was flipping out they went to PVK to ask him what to do, and he recommended 3 things -- I don't clearly recall now -- so maybe raw beef, and working with the earth, "and -- oh yes -- sex" (I do recall Sarita recounting those words).) one can disturb nature and it restores itself, unless one overdoes it, and that's what we're doing with our planet earth now. [ this 2-window bit is working very well -- especially with a trilingual -- one can type during the translation gaps -- especially when the translation proceeds smoothly, so one simply tunes it out ] it's called homeostasis, in contrast to heterostasis the earth resists change, whereas the holy spirit does not brook of any interference -- so it's the opposite of Ya Muid the revitalization is some thing you should do while you're on retreat -- the renewal from inside -- [ Incidentally, playback from Audacity apparently occurs in simulated stereo, even though the input was from mono and input in mono ] The template behind the formation of the cells is a very complex magnetic field -- not a homogeneous field. As our will increases the action of the universe upon us is less effective, because we interfere with our will. Applying the will as 'passive volition' -- which is always associated with visualizations, as in feedback -- hat is mind over body. If you imagine your cells to be regenerating and revitalized and dividing more quickly than before, they will do so. (w05n24) In fact it's the art of staying young as one gets old. HIK, with all his gentleness, there was such a power coming through Whereas the dervishes can be sometimes very harsh. (w05n27) It is because one is building a Temple, and concentrating on the Divine Presence in that Temple and that gives one an incredible power. (w05n28) A certain kind of anger comes into play -- the dervish has no patience with hypocricy -- it is the power to say no -- PVK is going into some detail in evoking the presence of the dervish -- It's much more difficult to say no than to say yes (w05n29) The zikr started with the Mazdeans La illa ha is very close to hallelujia -- they both come from the (arhaic proto_Semitic) Semitic language -- and also it is close to Elo(k)im -- where (k) is a euphemism for h In its very exoteric sense it is doing away with idols, but in its deeper sense it means, It is all G_d -- Tout est Dieu -- il n'ya pas autre de Dieu -- Al Hallaj said, on the cross, if you are conscious of proclaiming the unity of G_d, that is a contradiction -- (w05_7_n1) The Sufis say, the zikr shatters your sense of individualaity and the consequence is that the Divine Consciousness comes through -- and that is Fana followed by Baka The wazifa corresponds to LAHUT, the zkir corresponds to HAHUT The H of the zikr introduces a totally different level of reality from all that preceedes it -- TAPE 7 SIDE B 16 MINUTES We are talking of (ie, contemplating) the Divine Presences independent of whether or not it exists on the existential plane The Muslims do not say the HU, the Sufis do. [ Well, this puts a bit of a different spin on the story that PVK often tells -- that he was doing the zikr on a retreat, and his Guide said, Your father (ie, HIK) says, do not say the HU , say it only in your heart. ] For the Muslims it is an act of faith that there is but one G_d -- whereas for the Sufis the whole oint is not the existence, the manner of being, but rather (experiencing -- sa) the Presence of the Divine -- not theology but experience -- not the manner of being but the being Al Hallaj it was who said -- when several persons are invoking a being not present, that being is more present that those who are present. When one says HU, one feels the Divine Presence on the altar of the Temple, which is one's heart. To be prejudiced against Islam is alien to the spirit of this camp, and of the Message (PVK had heard -- and this is 1990 -- when Khomeni was the bugaboo -- that some did not want to repeat the ziikr because it was Islamaic -- ) (w05n17q) "At this camp we are studying and practicing the practding of all religions." The power of the zikr is gained by repetition -- if you do it 100 times it won't leave much mark on you if you do it 1000 times it will being to do something if you do it 10 000 times it will (affect you) For PVK, repeating the yikr 22 000 times a day for 40 days was required to become a Pir from 6 AM until late in the evening -- one comes out of it with tremendous power, and sees people rushing about like flies in a bottle, or acting like marionettes, and you think, if they only knew -- but as long as you satay in your personal ocnsciousness --- you will not transcende this -- [ Cf. Wittgenstein, in Philosophical Investigations -- "what is your prupose -- to show the fly the way out of the fly-bottle" ] like getting a good knock on the head (or -- you get a ) PVK remarks: I would not like to put people thorugh what I went through on my reterets -- nor advise it because you could go mad -- so don't force yourself -- but sometimes it's good to start a retreat with a practice that stops you from idle thinking -- you can't have idle thoughts while you're doing the zikr -- but only if you're totally concentrated on the zikr -- The repetition, especially repetition of (or in) motion, can get you into a trance state. That's exactly what we want to avoid. Thee only way to avoid it is to emphasize the upward motion going from illa to 'illa (PVK continues: and I always felt, doing it every day, (that) I'm glorifying in the cosmic celebration -- that's the only way to avoid trance -- and also it will make you extremely high -- (PVK adds: It's rather incongruous to come to a retreat without a rosary -- (a counter for doing the zikr), (also used by Roman Catholics, at least in the USA in the 1950s, in reciting the Hail Mary -- sa) -- because its much easier to do it if you prescribe a certain number of times -- so you have a rosary with 100 breads -- and in the east some rosaries have another 10, one for each hundred -- so that enables a count 1000 [ reckon they got that from the abacus -- or maybe the other way around -- sa ] PVK advises starting doing it 33 times, for 3 repetitions -- and then take a rest -- and then do 100 or take a string and make 100 knots on it -- 34 Minutes -- Sound goes up In India, they use the fingers -- because the whole idea is, if there's anthing you don't need, don't have it. So on each finger you have 3 positions -- (so that gives you 15 positions on the 2 hands, and then somehow PVK adds another 3 -- which gives one 33 this takes 2 mudras to get to 100 but the fingers stuff requirss some concentration, whereas the rosary does not.
