I am concerned primarily with omissions in the Kaivan English set, since English is the language the KITs was written in. Those apparent omissions from the Kaivan English set and also from the Kaivan German set will be noted at the end of this section. Anyone who can send me whatever Enlgish KITs (but not German KITs) that I am missing, please do so. Semd same prefereably as input (either disc sent by SnailMail, or Email to me at sa73122@yahoo.com), but otherwise in hardcopy. ** Kaivan remarks to me in an Email I picked up 6 Dec '05, that he obtained the English KIT's primarily in an InfoBase from ZR, but also obtained some from other people whose names he does not recall. He says he thinks he does not have a complete set of KIT's. I can't guess how what he got from ZR he could not have been a complete set from ZR. He also says that for some of the English KITs there were no translations, so he translated them into German. Like I say, to re_iterate again: I should apologize, if not precisely repent, do tchuva, nor beg pardon, for hitch_hiking personal remarks onto PVK (and RSC) docs (RSC transcriptions only, he wrote no books and practically nothing like an article; PVK KITs , transcriptions, and my ancillary docs thereunto) BUT -- anyone who wants can take out them personal remarks; but if you do so, please give the doc a new name, and note on that new doc the docname of my doc that's the Source of yours, Morse. Kaivan also says that he less interested in Archival fine_points than in 'spreeding the Message'. [ Footnote 727h ] ----------------------------------------- PVK was a complex and subtle thinker, and often crafted exceptional precision of language to deploy his critical remarks with unusual tact. (As_it_is_said (HIK), "The 'Message' is a lullaby for those whose time it is to sleep, and a call to those whose time it is to awaken.") So I reckon that anyone who wants to translate PVK's KITs should first practice on Shakespeare. I mean, we ain't talking Faust I here. Nor even Wittgenstein. Either Wittgenstein. [ Well, such my impression when I transcribed and did a 'Flying Edit' of PVK's Zenith 1998 English week; ( that transcription should be in a zip or two in the adobetozenith@yahoo.com Briefcase ) But maybe these KITs aren't as difficult as I'd assumed. Glacing at the first few lines of each translation -- I've not tried to read them; my German ain't near good enough -- they do seem smooth and self_assured. ] Hadi -- Wittman, if memory serves -- did a lot of PVK KIT German translations, into about the mid '90's. He was pretty smart. Translators are not noted on these docs; they should be. As noted, Kaivan translated some of them, presumably from the post_Hadi era. That would be, from about the mid_1990's on. We've lost, and even driven away, a number of first_rate people over the years, and should try to bring them all back. As_it_is_said, "It's so difficult to get good help nowadays." (USA lament of the idle rich, mid 1900's.) PVK used to say (Abode Camp, ca. mid_1970's, quoted from memory): "If they ask you to do something, it doesn't necessarily mean you're qualified, it just means they couldn't find anyone better." ----------------------------------------------------------------- [ N.B. (sa) -- I don't make time to check the Kaivan Gr texts against his English KIT texts, much less whatever harcopy English KITs I happen to have got and held onto, Tonto ] [ That is to say, Jose: I check Kaivan Gr KITs only for a few lines, to see that they are translations of their English counterparts, not to spot the mistakes therein. ] [ Apologies I be's redundant, Pundit. ] ------------------------------------------------------------------ [ Note (sa): In at least one case (KIT 98), and I think that also in a few other cases, Kaivan's titles ain't complete. When I've noticed that and was not unduly spaced out, I have completed the title. As noted, Kaivan sometimes mis_formats a remark apparently by PVK as if it were a quote from the dude cited after the last of a short series of consecutive quotes. And in some instances Kaivan makes this apparent mistake with a standalone quote. Whenever the quote ain't immediately attributed in Kaivan, I add a presumed attribution. I always put such presumed attributions in (parentheses), with the appended remarked 'I presume' or something equivalent. When I do that with what I take to be quotes from HIK -- for in one of the early KIT's PVK remarks that any unattributed quotes are from HIK -- I use the abbreviation 'HIK'. The abbreviation 'HIK' never -- "well, hardly ever" (Gilbrt & Sullivan's Something) occurs in Kaivan, nor, presumably in the origianl hardcopy. All I do is skim the paragiraffe [ 'paragiraffe' (singular, 'paragraph', is defined as an extended paragraph, eg a KIT ], I don't read the sentences. Caveat, Copycat. So far I have not found substantive differences, except between Kaivan KIT 30 vs. SOS KIT 31. It is my impression that the SOS set is an earlier draft. Or maybe the Kaivan set was lightly editted. KIT Kaivan 30/SOS 31 was presumably revised by PVK, though it may thereafter have been lightly editted [ IMPORTANT EDITORIAL NOTE (sa): All of my set of KIT's -- ie, this Save_As__Text_only copy of the Kaivan set of KIT's -- should be cross_checked against the origianal hardcopy, or better, against the original input, presumably held by ZR at Suresenes -- as I notae elsewhere, in 1999 he had offered to bring me a CD of that input when he came to Israel. I am finding numerous instances where was I took as a quote from HIK , because it is in italics and blue_font in Kaivan, is in non_italics in the hardcopy, and hence is presumably by PVK, not HIK. I make that mistake when the passage in question is the not_last - - usually, the first -- of 2 or more quotees, of which the last is identified in Kaivan, and in hardcopy, as a quote from HIK. When I make this assumption, I cite it as '(HIK)' or as '(HIK, presumably)' or some equivalent phrase. (Once a hippie, always a hippie.) The non_breaking hyphen is used for compound_words The breaking hyphen is used when you can't squeeze all of a word onto the end of a line, and so you break it at a suitable syllababble , because it looks so much neater to have all the lines ending 'flush_right', that is, 'justified', ie, precisely at the right_margin. I think that's bourgeoise frou_frou and so I don't do it too. That is, I always type non_justified, aka 'ragged_right'. Nor a fortiori do I 'kern', that is, adjust spaces between letters. Nor do I use preportional spacing. That is, by me, each letter has the same size, the space between letters is the same, and the space between words is the same. So each line has the same number of characters -- usually 65, which in the good old days in the USA was a line_length of 6.5 inches, if you typed using the 'pica' font, which is 10 characters per inch, rather than the elite font, which is 12 characters per inch, and considered a bit more ritzy. ('ritzy' is use slang for 'hoity_toity'. From 'The Ritz', slang for the 'Ritz_Carleton Hotels', which were the most expensive. Hence USA slang ca. 1920's, "putting on the ritz". Just thought you should know. [ Footnote Pampelmousee ] Again, someone said, in this instance, neither Schiller nor Beethoven deserved each other. "Chugging beer and shtupping women, which is more than Ludwig can." Seriously, PVk often speaks of Beethoven's idolization of Napoleon in the Eroica, and his subsequent disillusionment. But to take to the 9th as a repudiation of militarism -- my impression, hearing it at City College Lewishon Stadium when I was maybe 17, was that it was a repudiation only of introspective,, romantic gloom. But maybe the opening of the 4th movement is a posited and then repudiated military fanfare.
