Well, the apercus just keep coming:

"Pain is never
an isolated situation; what we look upon as our pain is our
participation in a network of pain that may well extend to the
whole humanity." (PVK KIT 004)

PVK, as always, shows little tolerance for self_pity.
At one Zenith lecture, which I think I've transcribed, he remarks,
'and then I fall into self_pity, and am no good for anyone'.

So he does say, in effect, when you can't transcend it, indulge it
a bit and then get back to work.

Of his own pleasures, he once remarked, during a Zenith lecture,
'I do like a shampoo in the morning'.  (Quoted from memory).

Well, shove over Henry James.  PVK does show a nice sensitivity to
the peculiarly convoluted  feelings of us mortals:

"As we dig more deeply into our own and the other's conscious and
unconscious motivations, each concealing and sometimes
precipitating another motivation, we come to realize how ignorance
of each other's intentions builds up into a totally phantomized
mountain of misassessments, one resting upon the other. As one
touches the bottom, where it hurts most, one realizes that the
worst pain is caused by being misunderstood, or by
misunderstanding the other."(PVK KIT 004) 

He is here urging that one take a whole_istic view of one's own
hurt -- that is, instead of being self_centered and feeling sorry
for yourself, see your situation as part of a reciprocal debacle.

And then there's a nice gloss on HIK's aphorism: "Rise in love,
don't fall in love." (HIK , Collected Sayings, 1053:  "Do not fall
in love but rise." )
[ I think my version's a bit better, but by now I've had more
practice writing English than most folks. ]


So PVK says:

"Where the probe exposes an intention evidencing a disregard for
the other, love is outraged by a feeling of betrayal. The usual
outcome is a devalidated self image:  one had suspended one's self
esteem so precariously upon being loved and the default of love
has let one down!" (PVK KIT 004 )

And then there's a nice line for anyone entering unto Holy Wedlock
(aka Deadlock ):

"Of course, interests cannot always be in synch;
one may entertain conflicting aspirations. But love is standing by
one another supportively, guarding each other's pride."

And PVK used to say, especially Abode Camps mid_70s, when he did
weddings at the CC's at the end of Meditation Weeks, to the
Bridegroom  anyhow: 'Take your spouse as your chiefest trust.' --
you can hear that on the tapes.

I must say, this KIT would be, or could make with a bit of poetic
polish,  a darned good sermon to read at a wedding.

With no lack of witty quips & flip trips but onion dips needs be

Andermatt would be ok if they just let Texas manage it.  Or even

(Oy, and now I read in today's paper, some clown from an Emirate
wants to build an 800_bed hotel, with a golf course.  Like, 3 days
before Christmas and half the hotels were still on vacation. )

into town, turn in at the Gas Station Cafe for a hot cup of coffee
-- so far everything's fine -- but they aiin't got hash_brown
potatoes and fried eggs sunny_side_up , with a dash of pepper, and
maybe some pancakes, even if I should pass on the sausage or bacon

One year, late 80's maybe, or else early 90's PVK remarked that

had been repeatedly asking him, What can we do for you -- 
and so he said, I want to conduct the Bach B_Minor Mass in the

he once said, at Zenith, this was the year he did a
retreat in his van here --

I was getting ready to shlep the rockwool away from
beside it, but then he moved the van, so I didn't -

he moved the van to 'an undisclosed location' --

that is, I never found it --

I did go out looking for it one rainy
night, because Jody done showed up at the
Zenith office distressed at being late,
saying, 'I've got to bring him his
supper' -- 

so I just told her to mellow out, 

but then I went out for a little walk

in the wrong direction,

observations, and Jody tried to transcribe it, but
said she could not, his voice was too spaced out.

was a graduate student in philosophy
there while she was just sitting in her
van behind Sandia Mountain --

 'When I take a retreat, it is for you' -- ie, for his
mureeds.

One day Andreas went to his van to fix something on
it -- Andreas was a very solid dependable worker --

So anyhow, as Andreas told it, he gets to the van
with no unseen Guardians blocking his path, not

hundred miles of this place --

So whatever Andras was maybe hiding he
demonstrably had a good heart.

So we should look out for him.  The next
year he flipped out a bit, and came back
to Zenith but only for a few hours visit. 

Well, whatever he may have thought he
did, or tried to do, he did no harm that
I could see, and was quite a good help.
