This story is about a little girl and a little boy. This boy was a talmid chachom and already at Bar Mitzvah age. He was travelling from city to city, learning in every Bet Midrash. He'd also go by himself to the forest to meditate and learn and davon. The little girl came to visit the forest also every day to dance and sing. She met the little boy and started to bring him cookies and a glass of tea every day. So, they became good friends.
But, the little boy grew up and left the forest to become a great rebbe. The little girl grew up and a terrible tragedy happened. She became sick and couldn't walk. Her parents took her to every doctor in the country but no one could cure her. She went to all the rebbes - no one was able to help her.
Then she heard of a great rebbe, Baruchal of Viznitz and she wanted to go. Her parents were already so full of despair; they couldn't bear the thought of going to one more rebbe and being disappointed again. But, she insisted as she had one last drop of hope that this Reb Baruchal could help. So, they hitched up the horses and carried her to the carriage and were on the way. There was a great snowstorm and they feared they would never get to the house of the rebbe.
Meanwhile, at Reb Baruchal's house, in the middle of the snowstorm, Reb Baruchal instructed his chassidim who were learning in the middle of the night, to prepare a table with cookies and drink. He told them that someone special was on the way. And so the table was set with the cookies and drink and they waited for their guests. So, in this terrible snowstorm, the family arrived.
They came into the yeshiva of Reb Baruchal and everyone was waiting for them. 'When Reb Baruchal saw the young girl being carried in he started to cry. "Oy, its hurts me so much to see you like this!" She looked up at Reb Baruchal and their eyes met and she recognized her friend from the forest. She also started to cry. Reb Baruchal said, "Please, please, won't you bring me cookies and tea like you used to when we were little ones in the forest."
So she got up and brought Reb Baruchal cookies and tea as they used to when they were little. It is so, so good, to remember your friends. May we all be blessed with such good friends, friends who remember us, friends who can help and heal us. I bless you me and all of us with such friends.
