RE: Suggestions for preparation of R. Shlomo material

------------------------------------------------------------------

Again, I suggest that highest priority be given to
(1) inventory-ing, (2) backing up (3) inputting to disc
all (a) on-disc material (b) hard-copy (xerox and original, typescript and handwritten; and also printed material: HBG, CNS,journal interviews, etc.) (d) Videotapes, both amateur andpolished.
Insofar as possible, input from hard-copy to disc can be byOCR Scanner to ASCII. (Hewlett-Packard HP ScanJet 3p with CaleraWordScan software listed US $599; USA Tel: 1-800-SCANJET x8825). That will then require proof-reading/correction, and insertion ofHebrew.

The physical risk to storage media, especially audio tapes, should be a major concern; all audio tapes should be backed up,and the Master tapes then safely stored. All original transcriptsmust be photocopied. All hard-disc material must of course becontinually backed up, with back-ups stored in at least twophysically separate locations. There must be several physicallyseparate complete collections of R. Shlomo material, inappropriate professional office and academic environments.

Needless to say, all copy-rights to all R. Shlomo material, unless such had been otherwise assigned by him, rest with theCarlebach family, unless explicitly assigned by the Carlebachfamily.
Needless to add, persons who have transcribed, input, andotherwise worked on the preparation of R. Shlomo material haveappropriate claims to financial and other recognition; thatespecially applies to the collection of work prepared by theWitts.
(Again, personally: I have asserted no claim to copy-rightnor financial interest, and waive any future such assertion.)
(However, my guess is that it's unlikely that anyone willever realize net income from this material; our experiencehitherto has been the reverse.)

Collecting material to disc is necessary if topicalcollections of R. Shlomo teachings (eg on Rebbes, parshiot, etc.)are to be prepared; it is also a pre-requisite for scholarship.
It is important that all input material included a "sourcetrace", identifying the previous document-names of input, thetranscript, and if possible tape from which it was derived, andnoting the transcriber, inputter, proof-reader, and editors. Dateand place of teaching must also be identified.
Document names should include date of teaching, in yymmddformat. A standard syntax for input, transcript, and tape ID should be established.
It is desirable that editors identify R. Shlomo's texts andreferences.

Many transcripts and all tapes (until audio-casette-to-disc(ASCII) technology is developed) will have to be input by typists;funding typists on a per-page basis should be a funding priority. Persons typing large quantities of material, especially the Witts, must, as a funding priority, be supplied with a foot-pedalautomatic-reverse audio-cassette-adaptor transcribing machine.
