Re-Posted teaching by R. Shlomo Carlebach, on Pesach, at Yakar
RE-PARAGRAPHED BY sa

{EDITORIAL NOTES:  (sa) }
The following editorial notes apply to =sh_ykps1.* + =sh_ykps2.*

I (sa) am, entirely on my own initiative and sole responsibility, re-posting a set of 3 E-mail messages, conveying a transcript of aR. Shlomo Carlebach lecture at Yakar. As with all teachingsposted to this LIST, these are, of course, not for commericalpublication.
I don't know the precise Source of this transcript.
I do not know who the transcriber and inputter was/were.
Maybe Tamar Goshen Gottstein (=TGG).
I didn't transcribe nor input it. The inputter, who hasinterjected clarifying remarks in parentheses, knows more aboutreligious Judaism than I do; but so does almost everyone.
The input was evidently in EinsteinWriter (W.EXE), which iswhat has been used for nearly all input R. Shlomo Carlebachteachings that I know of. (RG used Write for Windows.)
The input was apparently conveyed by Chanaleah Bogost to AG,who posted it to LIST; I retrieved it from Archive log9504 (whichStaloff's Daemon chopped into 3 parts); then stuffed it, mostly, into wp=W.EXE, retyped a short section that wouldn't stuff (seenote below), and will convert it back into ASCII before (Re)Posting to LIST.

** Note that the Line Length must be 75 characters; otherwisethe required-CR's inserted by some Daemon will make for jumpyreading. Someone with a program with a global-replace thataccepts required-CR as a character, can tidy it up, maybe. (There may also be inserted spaces.)
Someone who received the original posting might have thisteaching in a more manageable format.
The Line-Lenght (=LL) of the original input was evidently 65characters.
	A Daemon seems to have interserted a forced_underline to marka line-feed (non-required CR, 'word-wrap').
Some short character-strings didn't convert to English ASCII,and appear as either ASCII gibberish or hex-like gibberish. Thatoccurred before I got the doc out of Archive. Probably they wereHebrew characters; fortunately the inputter has transliterated.

Pesach/ Yakar Reb Shlomo speaking:

Rosh Chodesh Nisan is mamash Rosh Hoshanah, but it's the_
sweetest Rosh Hoshanah in the world. How do you know who is a_
good doctor? When someone needs an injection... Have you ever_
seen a fake doctor, he puts the needle here, then there. This arm_
is no good, try the other one. Then he says, no, let's put it_
somewhere else.

You know, the MODJITSER Rebbe once said, how do_
you know who's a good driver? He comes to a U-turn, when you go_
straight, every driver is good. When it comes to a U-turn, right,_he
goes here, there, here, there until nebech, gives it a shuckle,_your
kishkes are turning over. A good driver makes a U-turn. (no_shuckles)

You know Rosh Hoshanah, it's so heavy, gevaldt, right.
_Chodesh Nisan, it is so
good, right. Mamash, it's mamash a New_Year. And everything is good.

Anyway, good Chodesh! I'm sure you learned it better than I will ever learn
it, so_don't expect anything.
{Comment (sa):  R. Shlomo Carlebach's lectures at Yakar were usually structuredas commentary on a stated text; Mimi Feigelson, at Yakar,  would probably recallthe text for this teaching. }

OK. OK, before I even begin, let me just give
you a few things.

_There's a gevaldt story. His name was Reb Naftali Tsvi
Yehuda_Berlin. He was Rosh Yeshiva in VOLOZHIN. Anybody who knows_anything
about the Torah knows that he was like the Rebbe of all_the Rebbes. Like
the Torah of the last 150 years... not to be_believed. He was like.... But
sadly enough, the Yeshiva closed_and it's a long, long story.

But besides
all the s'forim he gave_out, he gave out the Sefer, Ha-Emek Davar, on
Chumash, which was_very precious to him. On the day that the sefer came
out, he made_a big feast.

And he told the story, that when he was little,
his_father was a tailor. He was very poor. So his father wanted him_also to
become a good tailor. So when he was about 11, 12, his_father was preparing
him to be a good tailor. But he didn't want_to be a tailor. So one day
mamash on his own, he ran off, he went_to yeshiva, and learned, right. So
he says he had a gevaldt_dream. That he became a tailor. He was a good
tailor. He comes_up to heaven. He was a good tailor. He goes to paradise,
right. _But before he goes into Paradise, they say, we want to show
you_something. So angels come and they wrote in all the s'forim which_he
could've written if he would have gone to learn Torah, right. _And they
told him, look what you missed out. And it hurt him so_much in the dream,
look what I could have been! I could have been_a light to Israel for all
generations to come. So I was a cute_tailor.
And he says, in great pain he woke up. So he decided_that if God gave himthe privilege not to be a tailor and to come_out with the book, he has to make afeast.

I want you to
know something very deep.
Yom Kippur, I was_learning a little bit last
night, but even stronger today.
On Yom_Kippur I'm dealing with the whole
Torah. The Torah says, don't_eat the hamburger on Yom Kippur. I'm sorry
G-d, I have to tell_you the truth, I was in a bad mood, I ate a hamburger.
Shabbos,_I'm not supposed to drive a car. But what can I do, I had
this_date with this girl, and I thought, maybe it's a shidduch, it's_very,
very important, I drove down. OK, I'm dealing with the_"dinim" (laws) of
the Torah. I'm not really dealing with mamash_humble me, right.

{I think the Daemon inserts a  +  instead of an underline - sa}

Pesach the
whole thing is in my house. It's in_my house. See, if my neighbor has
chamets, it's not my business. _Yea, maybe VokI` dy=7F`| (Sh'chaina ha-karov=,
a close neighbor) _I should tell him. But it's my house. That means, Pesach
is_mamash +m+y own house, my own life. And I have to be "bodek"_chamets in
my life. The deepest depths of my life. What's wrong_with me, right? But
before G-d can tell me what's wrong with me,_he has first to show me what's
good with me.

Listen, if I tell a_person who walks on all fours, why do you
walk on all fours? _First I have to show him a person who walks on two. So
before I_can even tell a person what's wrong with you, first I have to
show_you where you can be.

{I think the Daemon puts a = in place of a non-required hyphen}

And this is awesome. So we'll learn it inside in
a few minutes.
First it says, _ G`=7F nG=7F|F FV=7F (Or l'arba asar) The Great
Light shining on the_14th. You know what light, before B'dikas Chamets (the
Search for_Leaven), at night... that night G-d is showing you where you
could_be. G-d is showing you your own roots. Where you reach. Where_you are
reaching.

Let me tell you on a very simple level. Let me ask you, do_we ever know how
much we mean to other people. We don't know,_right. So you're my friend,
you're my friend, I love you, you_love me. It's all beautiful. Imagine if
G-d would reveal to me_how much I mean to this other person. Gevaldt would
I be careful. _Gevaldt would I be careful. Awesome, right.

Let me tell you
something very, very deep.
You know, let's_assume that there's one Moishala
in the world I can't stand. And_one of my side hobbies is to say bad things
about Moishala. Then_one day it would be revealed to me, prophetically that
this_Moishala loves me so much. I would die from shame. I would die_from
shame. Gevaldt, how come I'm so insensitive. Gevaldt, where_do I stand?
Where do I stand?

I want you to know one more thing. Let's imagine, heilage_Reb David'l, or
the Rebbe Reb Meir'l would tell me, "Listen, I_want to talk to you." I'll
be on my toes, right, somebody_important wants to talk to me, right. A
yiddele wants to talk to_me. Imagine if it would be clear to me every
morning, that the_Ribbono Shel Olam, the Master of the World, wants me to
talk to_Him in the morning. If it would be mamash clear to me.
Humanly_speaking, the Ribbono shel Olam... The Zohar HaKodesh says,
the_bbono shel Olam is mamash waiting for every Yid to daven_Shacharis (the
morning prayers). Would I just knock off the_davening? I wouldn't be able
to do it, right.

Let's assume husband and wife, you wake up in the morning
and_you say, "Good Morning". Ehh. How do most parents say "Good_Morning" to
their children? Most don't say it, and if they do,_they say "Good Morning".
Imagine it would be clear to them, that_their children, in their dreams,
are waiting for the morning for_their parents to tell them, "Good Morning".
But imagine my child_is already grown up, and suddenly, prophetically, I
get a message_from heaven, Do you know that the whole life of your child,
he or_she was waiting for you to tell them one time a gevaldt
"Good_Morning". It would be impossible to live after that. And if I_would
live, it would be a miracle, right. Gevaldt, what I could_have done.

So you
see the deepest depths is... Imagine if I had this_unbelievable prophecy
that my child was waiting all those years_for me to tell him or to tell her
"Good Morning" properly, right. _And now she's already, let's say 30 years
old. I wouldn't be able_to bear it. But imagine if at the same moment I
have another_prophecy, Why don't you tell them "Good Morning" right now?
And_it'll fix everything. It'll fix everything. All you have to do_right
now, just say... and it's so easy. You know what I mean to_say, it is
deeper than doing Tshuvah. It is deeper than doing_Tshuvah. I'm not
standing the night before Pesach, Fn gjG, Fn_gjG, Fn gjG. (al chate, I've
sinned, I've sinned, I've sinned) _You know what I'm going to do?

And I just want to tell you outside first what he says.
_The night before
Pesach, G-d is shining into me. Where I'm_reaching, my roots. That means
where I'm reaching, humanly_speaking, in God's heart.

You know what roots
are, I have a long_string and I shuckle the string here, right, but it's
shuckling up_there, two million miles up there, right. You know what it
says, kFy| g|n Ign\` (Yaakov chevel_nachlaso) Yaakov, a little Yiddela
here...

You know what the_Chidushei Harim says, a Yid who doesn't believe
that when I put my_yamulke from right to left, I'm turning over heaven and
earth,_doesn't know what Yiddishkeit is.

So on one hand it shows me_where
I'm reaching, and then I realize, I did everything wrong. _But you know
what it shows me also, all you have to do, there is_one crumb chamets that
you have to get rid of. It doesn't cost_anything. No pain. There is one
little crumb inside of you which_has to be thrown out. That's it.

And you
know what that means? _It's even deeper than Yom Kippur. I don't have to do
Tshuva. And_I'm not promising anything. But while I'm looking for
the_chamets, and you see the chamets is +m+y chamets, and you'll tell_me,
where does it say in Shulchan Aruch that this is chamets. You_know it's
chamets. You know it's chamets.

I want you to know one of the greatest
things in my life_which mamash gave me a taste of Shabbos, when the Holy
Bobover_Rebbe came the first time to America, and he was the first
Rebbe_who came after the war. Unbelievable, right. What a privilege. _First
of all he saved thousands of Yidden. He saved thousands of_babies because
he was dressed as a Polish officer and he was_working in Nazi headquarters.
Every morning in the helicopter,_they would fly over all the concentration
camps in Poland, and_inspect everything, if the gas chambers, if the smoke
is coming_out. Gevaldt. Can you imagine mamash, he was sitting there
right_next to them, the Nazi General supervizing. But he could go
into_concentration camps whenever he wanted to. He brought out_hundreds of
babies. He was caught 127 times, like our Holy Mother_Sarah, 127 times.

But
anyway, what I want to tell you is, what I_remember forever is the first
time I saw him. He davened, and_after the davening, the way he said "Good
Shabbos". Until that_moment, I've never seen anybody saying "Good Shabbos",
besides_Moishala "Good Shabbos". Which is a different parsha, right._"Good
Shabbos".
{R. Shlomo has told the story of 'Moishele Good Shabbos' in many places; Cf. egBen-Zion Solomon's Shlomo Shabbos songbook.}

I think I shared with you, you know I had a twin brother,
two_days ago was the Yortseit. And we were little kids then. We were _only
15 years old. So he took my hand and my brother's hand_between his two
hands, he looked at us and he says, "We know each_other from last
lifetime." Gevaldt, right. Rebbes don't talk_like this always, right.
Special moments.

But the way he said_"Good Shabbos" to us, you know. And I
was always talking to my_brother, if we have a little taste of Shabbos,
it's from the "Good_Shabbos" of the Bobover Rebbe, right.

So imagine my
whole life, I_didn't say "Good Shabbos" properly. So Seder night it's clear
to_me, get rid of your chamets... that's it. You know what that_means, what
kept you from being the way you are supposed to be, is_not ten thousand
million tons of garbage which you have to get rid_of. One little crumb.

OK,
now let's learn inside.
Why is this Masechta of Pesach_beginning with the
word Light? Mamash on Pesach, when I have to_look for my chamets, the first
thing G-d has to show me, my roots. _G-d is showing me my place in the
world, where I could be. And then suddenly mamash it's clear to me, not
only my roots in_heaven, also the roots of my chamets. What's keeping me
from_being the way I'm supposed to be.

And here comes the deepest Torah in the world.
There's an_unbelievable
Torah in the IG`\ bVd (N'os Desheh), from the_brother of the Bais Yaakov.
You know on Pesach, you have to bring_a gjG\ (chatas), a sin offering. So
he asks the deepest_question in the world. Last night we got out of Egypt.
I mean_how much sinning do you have time to do Seder night, even if you_are
an expert on sinning, right, like some of us. So the next_morning you
already have to bring a sin offering? So he says the_deepest Torah in the
world. That night, when we got out of Egypt,_we could have brought
Mashiach. The gates were open. The gates_were open. We were so happy to get
out of Egypt, that we didn't_ask for more. Baruch Hashem, I'm getting out
of Egypt.

You know it was suddenly so clear to me, you know, during_the Six Day War,
when we came back to Yerushalayim, we could have_asked the Ribbono Shel
Olam, bring Mashiach! At that moment, the_gates were open. We were so happy
to go out and blow the shofar_by the Holy Wall, and Moshe Dayan was a great
general, we were so_happy. That's it. Why didn't we ask for more?

You know
there's a Torah in Bais Yaakov, in another place_which is so deep and so
real. ....Reb Mickey and Reb Dovid'l want_to get some money for Yakar, so
finally you have an interview with_brother Rothchild. So Rabbi Rosen and
Rabbi Zeller are coming to_Paris to meet brother Rothchild, gevaldt. So
Rothchild says, I'm_very much impressed with your work, and what can I give
you? So_Dovid'l thinks, I don't want to be a pig and take away all
his_money. What should I say? So he says, you know what, give me_50,000
dollars. Rothchild says, I wanted to give you two million. _I wanted to
give you two million.

You see what it is, on Yom Kippur I'm giving G-d on
schedule_what I want. You know why I have to tell Him exactly what I want?
_Because the doors are not that much open. It's still a_Supermarket. You
tell G-d, "I want this, I want this." G-d says,_"Let's open your account,
how much credit you have, and we'll see_what's going on. Did you pay last
year's bill? We'll bargain it_out."

Seder night, it's a competely different story. Seder_night, the gates of
heaven are so open, that G-d wants to give you_everything. Mamash,
everything. So why don't you take it?

{A Recollection of the 'Old' Lubavitcher Rebbe}

One_of the last Torahs that the
=46reirdiche LUBOVITCHER Rebbe said, you_know he passed away, mamash eo`\`
DiE FnkI` (Z'chuto magen_aleynu, in his merit may he guard us) he passed
away Yud Shvat,_the last Tish he had was Yud Tes Kislev. It was awesome.
Later_on we realized he was mamash telling us his last will. But at_that
moment we didn't know.

One of the things he says, we are_always coming to
G-d like beggars. What's a beggar on the street_asking? A quarter, a
dollar. If he has gevaldt chutspa, he says,_give me five dollars. He says,
we are not beggars. We are not_homeless people. Why don't you ask G-d for
everything. So he_says, can you imagine, the son of Rothchild is standing
on a_street corner, begging for a quarter. Why don't you ask your_father,
you know, for everything. The Ribbono shel Olam wants to_give us
everything. Why are we so small?

So here comes the_Torah.
And you see what
it is, every Pesach the gates are open_and G-d wants to give us everything.
And hopefully, hopefully... _Every year we are fixing our vessels just a
little bit more. And_the closer we get to Mashiach, hopefully, G-d gives us
more.

This is the deepest Torah in the world.
The ISHBITSER says,_not only G-d
wants to give it to you. He gave it to you already. _It's already in my
account. It's just lying there. It's in my_account already. G-d forwarded
it to my account in the holy bank. _So why don't I see it? Because it's so
dark. It's unbelievable.

_So you hear what he says? The light is
unbelievable, like two_sides. On one side, on one hand, G-d is showing me
who I am,_right. And then G-d is showing me also, what I have. And you_have
it, you have it all.

Let's put it this way. I'm learning Gemora and I say_Ribbono shel Olam,
please, I would like to know this page. On_Pesach I can say to G-d, I would
like to know the whole Shas_tonight. Why not?

You see, Shavuos... (we were
learning it last_night, if you remember) Shavuos is, the Torah is down to
this_world. In this world, first you learn Aleph Bais, you learn
one_sentence. Then you read a

chapter, you read another book. It's a slow process, because G_dcreates the world in six days. It takes a little while.
Pesach is on the level of Shabbos. {#} (May-m'charathaShabbat, from the day after Shabbos, in reference to the Omer,Pesach is called Shabbos) Shabbos, there's no time. No time.
You see, what I'm learning Seder night is not words. I'm notsitting Seder night and learning. Vlkl G'gekl/jnk\{I think thatwas once Hebrew --sa} (Sh'nayim ochzim b'talis, the first Mishnain Baba Metsiya),

And again, remember we were learning last night {Reference ispresumably to the preceeding Yakar lecture -- sa} the Hagadah waswritten by Eliyahu haNavi. Eliyahu haNavi lives forever. And youknow what `lives forever' means? It does not mean only he'll liveforever two million years from now. He lives forever everysecond. He lives forever every second. It means every second, every second is awesome.

So he says: On Seder night, that means, the night before theSeder, G_d lets me know where I reach. G_d lets me know my placein the world. It's all one. G_d lets me know that it's all therealready.

You know, why am I opening the door to Eliyahu haNavi onSeder night, because it's clear to me that Eliyahu haNavi isstanding by the door. All year long I am not aware of it.

Then one more thing. The most important thing.
Do you know what G_d needs you for? Do you know which is theone Mitsva which connects you to G_d.
You know, every person has to keep the whole Torah. Butthere is one Mitzva which is the Mitsva of my Neshama. One thing.
You know, sometimes you see a person, maybe their Mitsva isdavening, right. Then you meet another person, maybe their bigMitzva is to do favours for others. Maybe one person, his biggestmitzva is to go to hospitals to visit people. It doesn't mean hedoesn't have to put on Tefillin. Yes, but this is his mitzva, right.

You know all the Rebbes, every Rebbe has one 'Masechta'(volume of the Gemora). What's his Mashechta. As much as theyknew every word of the Torah.

	You know the

Holy_SANZER, his "Masechta" was "Baba Metsia". He learned twenty years_Baba
Metsia, unbelievable. Gevaldt, can you imagine what level. _Awesome, right.
The Heilage ROPSHITSER learned "Masechta Succah"_all his life.

There's an
unbelievable story, the KOTSKER Rebbe called_somebody in. He said, I want
you to know one Masechta by heart. _So he thought he would be very clever,
the smallest Masechta is_"Masechta Horios", only 12 pages. He comes back
and he says,_mamash, we should all live long, "Rebbe, I learned Masechta
Horios_by heart." The Kotsker Rebbe says, "Oy, do you know, chas_v'shalom,
it was decreed in heaven that you should leave the_world. So I prayed you
out, that you shouldn't leave the world_until you know one Masechta by
heart. If you would have taken_Masechta Baba Basra, it has 172 pages, you
could have lived for_another 10 years."

It's unbelievable, right. You know
sometimes_we think we are so clever. We are fooling G-d? We are
never_fooling G-d, we are only fooling ourselves.

OK, Seder Night, mamash,
I see my place in the world. Why am_I a little bit sad inside? We all are
sad inside.

Imagine I have_a million dollars in the bank in Switzerland,
but I don't know the_name of the bank. Heartbreaking, right. I shlep myself
like a_shlepper, and I have a million dollars and I don't know where it_is.
Seder night, the night before the Seder, G-d lets me know the_name of my
bank in heaven. Where this Mitsva is which opens all_the gates for me.

The moment that I would know exactly my roots, the moment I_would know
exactly my connection, where my connection is... Let's_assume, suddenly it
would be clear to me that my deepest_connection to G-d is Shabbos. Then I
would know right away that_Masechta Shabbos is my masechta. Or let's assume
something else. _Maybe my way of serving G-d is by fasting. Ah, Masechta
Ta'anis. _Or imagine it's clear to me suddenly that my biggest thing
is_Pesach. So I will know mamash to learn Masechta Pesachim.

And also you
know why I am so sad, because I don't know how_to fix my past. I don't know
how to fix everything. But you see_this one Mitsva, which I'm supposed to
do, this one Masechta which_I'm supposed to learn, this is my key.

Remember, we were learning alot of times.
How do I know_which is the key to
the door? Very simple. If you have to kvetch _a hundred times until it
opens, it's not the key, right. If it's_the real key, no problem. I put it
in, I open it, right.

You_know why we have so much trouble opening our
hearts? Because I'm_opening it with the wrong key, right. Imagine my
Masechta is_Pesachim and I'm sitting and kvetching Baba Metsia. Hey,
it_doesn't go. I break the key and chas v'shalom, who knows what. _So this
is what it is, you go from one good thing to the other. _You know most of
us, we don't have our act together, because we_don't know what we are
supposed to do. This is gevaldt.

And this is the deepest depths in the world, really.
How_does parnasa come?	I'm sure you know it anyway.
I always think,_you know, I have this store
and I believe 100% that it's not_really the store, it's G-d who's helping
me with the store but_regardless, it's the store and I get money through
it. Which is_true. 100% true. But you see what it is. I forget sometimes,
_parnasa doesn't start in this world. Parnasa is mamash a gevaldt_energy
coming down from heaven. Gevaldt, right. Sometimes a_little helicopter
comes down bringing me parnasa. Sometimes it's_a 747. Sometimes, a Concord.
Maybe it's a missile, right. I_don't know. And do you know why I have so
much trouble with_parnasa? Because I don't know my roots. I'm completely
off my_roots.

But you see, I'm sure you know this, you know, we think
in_heaven, they are just flying around there. There is mamash a way.
_Mamash an airplane is like a highway. And you know sometimes an_airplane
shuckles when it comes up to a certain altitude because_it's not on that
highway yet, right. Until it reaches that_highway where it's mamash like on
a street, right.
