[FN3-sa] If it was the dry season, it's quite likely that theyoung women wore shorts. -- sa]

[And the absurdity of the image of someone getting dressed in hisShabbat best in order to get angry, helps us, as a sort ofreductio ad absurdum, to appreicate that it is not a mitzva toget angry.]

{N.B.:  I had misspelled 'Sanzer' as 'Samzer'; that probablylimited the PSearch in =rebb1094.*}

[the incident that sparked the Makabi rebellion against SyrianHellenized occupation.
R. Shlomo apparently takes that incident as the marriage of thedaughter of the High Priest; not, as reported in I Maccabees 2:15,simply that "the king's officers, that were enforcing theapostasy, came into the city Modi'in to sacrifice."

[Fna3]
[By most accounts, the Hamonean city of Modi'in was on the site ofthe present Arab village of Media,
In their commentary to The Cambridge Bible for Schools andColleges (Cambridge University Press, 1897), the Rev. W.Fairweather, M.A. and J. Sutherland Black, LL.D remark:
"Modin: The MSS give the name in various fosrms. In I Macc. itis usually Modein, gut sometimes also (e.g. in ix:19) Modeeim. Sometimes it is called a village (Josephus), and sometimes a city(v. 15). It stood on high ground, on the spur of the mountains(Cf. xiii. 27-30). It was situated in the vicitny of Lydda(Disopolis), on the road from Jerusalem to Joppa, and is almostcertainly to be identified with the modern village of el-Medijeh,2 1/2 hours east of Lydda (Ludd)."

In a typescript attributed to R. Avraham-Aryeh Trugman of MeorModi'in, which I input (with much mitake-ing, in mytransliteration, of Mem for Nun-sofit) =e_m3.ein, there is adetailed discussion of the alternate spellings, Modi'in andModi'im. He remarks that 'The fourth possible location of theGrave of the Makabees is the Tel south of Media. HaMikdash. Relics have been found from the Bronze as well as the Greek, Romanand Byzantine Ages.'

Medijeh, which is territory occurpied 1948-6/67 by Jordan, is ashort pleasant walk, one way anyhow, of about 2 km. from MoshavMeor Modi'in.

Machmud _____, the foreman for the apricot and avocado orchards ofMeor Modi'in, lives in Medijeh.
Once, while we were picking meesh-meesh (apricots), he showed methe intricate markings on the back of a tortise, and said, G_dmade that. It was Ramadan, and he was working all day withoutdrinking water. I asked him, how do you do it. He said, G_dgives us strength.

Once, before I came to Israel in 1985, the Green Patrol uprootedolive trees planted outside Medijeh (presumably to traditionallystake a claim to contested land); Reuven Gilmore and others fromMeor Modi'in went to Medijeh and replanted some olive trees.

At some time during the intifada, Mr. Yakov Rottenberg walked overto Midijeh to discuss the situation; his experience was ratherdifferent, as is intimated above, in this transcript.}
	At this writing [ 1/18/98 ] the government of the state ofIsrael has not yet, as far as I know, given away the assumed siteof the biblical city of Modi'in, and the presumable gravesite ofthe Makabees. But both the government of the USA and Israel'sloyal opposition would prefer that we do so.

	If I sell, and you buy, or conversely, 100 somethings -- egteachings, by me or not by me -- for $100, what was sold and whatwas bought, and who owned and owns what?
	What if what's sold is my freedom, or the family homestead,or my seat in the synagogue, or my place in the world-to-come.
	What if the seller is poor, or impoverished, and the buyerrich, -- or to generalize, if the needs of seller and buyer are ofdifferent orders of magnitude -- and what if a monopoly applies toseller, buyer, or commodity (eg, one of us has just been bit by arattlesnake, and the other one of us has the only tube ofrattlensake remedy east of Flagstaff) -- what are the criteria forsaying that Fair Market Value (FMV) was paid.}

{N.B.: There's a lot packed into that aphorism: `We haveeverything in the kitchen, and nothing on the menu.'
Eg, I'm still trying to grow past the USA-Christian assumptionthat Judaism is predominantly din, and Christianity is where youhave to go for hesed.}
