NOTES FOR AN INVENTORY UPDATE:

1) This is my annual, more or less, update of my listing, of allthe teachings of R. Shlomo Carlebach, in all media, that I knowof; with additional administrative notes.
That listing hiherto consists of: =inv94964.zip, 145.818K3/24/97; =in96junk.zip, 23.262K, =invsh97.zip, 39.697K.
Other administrative docs are bundled into =shmemos.zip, 50.940K,5/13/96; some subsequent memos were Posted to LIST; I think thatincludes note =shm1297, 12.003K, 12/25/97, =shm9801, 9.263K 9 Jan98, =shm_scr 17.434K 1/15/98; those will be bundled into=sh1297*.*

2) These updates partially revise and partially obsolete previousinv* docs as noted.

3) Caveat lector: As previously noted, all inv* docs are merelyrough-draft worknotes, not finished docs; and are intended onlyfor the use of persons seriously working, co-operatively and ingood faith (bona fide) on documenting/assemabling an accessiblemulti-locational authentic archive of extant R. Shlomo Carlebachteachings; these inv* docs are not intended for any widercirculation, neither direct nor indirect.
Postings to a LIST are in general intended only for anundeterminate subset of the noted Subscribers to that LIST.
(A similar caveat apparently applies to material posted to URL's;and so by the same token justifies widespread voluntary use ofpre-set censorship programs.)
===============================================================

Summary to 1 Apr 98: Responses to my annual request to allpersons for listings of all extant R. Shlomo Carlebach teachingsin all media in their collections have not fallen beneath theresponse-level of previous years; nor would that have been like, logically possible.
Miscellaneous details follow:

NEWLY DISCOVERED AND RUMOUR'D FIEFDOMS

Mordechai Pearlman writes that someone in Albany, on the R. Shlomolist ca. 12/96, had taped talks R. Shlomo gave weekly in Albany.
That would be: Rabb & Rbtn. Kellman, Albany Chevre, NY: Tel: 518--458-9052. No address nor E-mail given.

A FEW MORE NOTES ON COPYRIGHT:

I would suggest that, in general, the term 'copyright', asused in Postings to this LIST and in related contexts, stamds inneed of clarification.

CORRECTION: In material that I transcribed, input, andcollected 1994-ca. 1995, I often use the term 'copy-right'.

This was not intended as an suppposition of legal claim tocopyright, nor as necessary supposition of what is now, I guess, legally termed 'assertion of moral right'; merely as an assumptionof a sort of non-legal 'right to make commerical copies'.

As noted above: In general I do not revise previous input;instead I note Corrections on notes such as this. In general, when I do revise previous input, I flag that change with a minimalchange in docname. Instances include: the *.REV versions of somedocs; the revision of =sh9312ha.* to the subsequent =sh9312hb.*;and the revision of the 4-doc set of the two known B'nei Jeshrunteachings (of May 5 and May 11, 1976) from =sh7605*. to =si7605*.
Also my revision of RG's input from *.inp to *.inq
In general, I suggest that a revised docname increment thelast letter before the extention; as in renaming =sh9312ha.* to=sh9312hb.*
Again, I assert no claims to any material on which I haveworked; but note that others may assert such claims. By the sametoken do not assume myself entitled to either authorize or (perimpossible) refuse to authorize further distribution. Intranscribing material from commercially-released tapes, I note thecopyright at the head of the transcription; it may be thatcommerical rights to such transcriptions are then included in thepossession of the copyright-holder.
In particular, I do not intend to discourage others fromeditting out, without noting same, and or all interjections Imake, much to often, in transcripts. I take the opportunity ofthat captive audience to note anything I think might be useful topersons working on this material; those notes are only partiallysummarized in administrative docs like this.
However, editting transcription of words spoken by R. ShlomoCarlebach is quite another matter; I would most strongly requestthat anyone doing same note that edit: in a brief note at the topof the doc, in a change (preferably minimal) in docname), and in anote in the doc indicating my docname as immediate source. (Thisis a matter of responsible archive procedures, not of aggregatingbrownie-points. For one thing, it should inhibit furthercirculation of earlier drafts of corrected transcripts.)

There's a very elaborate copyright site, with particular focus onInternet copyright questions, on: http://www.fairuse.stanford.edu
JP Mag notes the Israel Supreme Court may consider whetherunauthorized uncredited journal publication of a scholar's 12year restoration of a Dead Sea scroll constituted infringement ofcopyright. Notes that the two critera for copyright are labour(Israel) and creativity (mostly USA). Does not discuss eg theinheritablility of retroactive copyrights. I don't know what acopyright is, and can't differentiate between (C) (P) (U) & (K).
===============================================================
RUMOURS OF ROTTENBERG HORDE

The Rottenberg Horde is presently estimated at 120 tapes. (Or byprevious accounts, 150, or 180.)
G1 is held by Mr. Rautenberg; G2 is held by Mr. Sands, and G3 isheld by Mr. Solomon; all residents of historic, if notanachronistic, Moshav Meor Modi'in. At last count, Mr.Rottenberg's G1, although out of the tipi, was not entirelyoptimally well-stored, and is used as playing-tapes, not preservedas archive.
Reportedly at the request of Mr. Sands, these tapes arereportedly not available to scholars nor to the public.

A cataloging (of tapes by number, I suppose), and very rough`inventory' (of contents of tapes, I suppose), was prepared by Mr.Solomon ca. 12/96; I have not heard that it has been updated.
This catalogue and inventory is apprently not availabe toscholars nor to the public; leastways I ain't seen it yet.

Mr. Sands has mooted a possible project of non-publicationtranscription, and of possible-publication re-copying of music;last's I heard, project has not yet like progressed to the fundraising stage.

In short, the Rottenberg Horde would seem to have become, upon the constraint of the purchaser of G2 set, a privatecollection (or very limited edition), with the original held bythe Hordemaster, and an a G3(!) archive set entrusted to BZ.

=================================================================
Drudgereport2: Rumour has it that no publication projects arepresently moving because NC
[N.B: In everything I have written, NC=`Neila Carlebach']

has asked for complete editorial control as a condition ofassent. {Comment (sa): (1) I'm not comfortable pushing outrumours; especially as it it seems explicitly prohibited by thehalaka of the chumash. (2) I'm not comfortable bogartingwhatever teachings I've transcribed &/or input, or even liberated. (3) As Professor of Mathematics Tom Lehar of Harvard once so aptlyput it*, to prematurely publish material that someone else ismeticulously on is "not nice"; the paradigm here would seem to beProf. Elisha Qimron's suit against Herschel Shanks, in the IsraelSupreme Court. [qv Rabinowtiz]
(4) There is, however, a qualification of bona fide; some of ushave deferred bringing materials on which we had worked to general notice, on the assumption that others were proceeding at goodspeed to bring those to publication.

re: shz_story (Edit sa of transcript of DZ retelling a story)
Moshe Stepansky writes, almost in toto: "I remember hearing R'Shlomo give it over, but it was buried very deep."
He adds: "Actually, I heard R' Shlomo give over this story. Theyoung Rabbi who got the 'miser' to give over the money would laterbecome known as the great R' Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the Ba'alHaTania, the firwst Lubavitcher rebbe.
I don't recall who the other two rebbes were, but they wereolder."

=================================================================
I keep hoping to identify the rest of the B'nei Jeshrun teachings.
All I have are the 5/5/76 and 5/11/76 teachings, which I input;both from the HH collection of transcripts. From remarks ontape, I gather that this was part of a series of weekly talks byR. Shlomo, with or under the direction of R. Meir Fund

The address for B'nei Jeshrun is: 257 W. 88 St., New York, NY. That's upper west side, Manhattan.

That is the re-input from Yaelbook of Forgiven at Last.

Elana Friedman confirms that she transcribed JW24, from which Iinput extensive excerpts only, viz:

A note on the Carlebach Foundation now states that it was founded5755. That seems to constitute an implicit correction to apreviously posted noted, which had seemed to imply that it wasfounded by R. Shlomo Carlebach.

QUETIONABLE TEXT:
In an article LINKed to the reb-shlomo WEBSITE, Jeanette Friedman,in an excerpt from an article on "exploring the mystique of RabbiShlomo Carlebach", which occurs in the CD-JeMMM Interactive JewishMultimedia magazine, Sponsored by the Website Virtual Jerusalem, remarks:

"And then [from the context of the article, not prior to 1956, andapparently not after 1958] he went to Columbia University and gothis Phd." (=history.htm)
The E-mail address for Jeanette Friedman is: FriedmanJ@aol.com
Clarification requested; no reply yet received.

JF also states that he was born 1925; but RN states: 14 Jan 1926.
I had hitherto challenges the first statement, within a notePosted to LIST; that challenge requires a partial retraction(Posed to LIST), viz:

CORRECTION: Source: in =z5autobi , my input of a manuscripttranscription by ZF, R.SC clearly states that he was enrolled inColumbia U. graduate school.

However, an enquiry to the registrar@columbia.edu yields (fromGary V. Jerusalem Star notes that its entire collection consists of thefollowing:

Best of S.C -- Songs and Stories, Vols. I-IV
	All copyright 1991,
	(I've transcribed all those stories: =sh_b60, =sh_bst70,=sh_bst80, =sh_rbst)
Shabbos with Shlomo -- Songs and Stories -- copyright 1991 --Jerusalem Star -- blurbed as "First new record in 10 years"[presumably, first new record made for Jeruslem Star]

"Live for the Jews of Russia" -- I don't think I've heard that one

Shabbos in Shomayim -- Songs & Stories,
Copyright 1995, Noam (Circle C, Circle P, all rights in Israel),Wordwide rights (say that 10 times) owned by Jerusalem Star.
--------------------------------------------------------------

To trace excerpts back to input Source is easy, just a simplePSearch for any phrase likely to be unique.
To trace an edit back to Source would take a much larger program, which hasn't yet been written, that I know of; one would besearching for a high percentage of matches for any string of wordswithin the editted excerpt.

Michael Ozair has posted to LIST editted excerpts from hiscollection. It is my impression that much of his collection ismaterial he has input. It is my guess that much of his input isitself excerpts, possibly even editted, from his collection oftranscripts and tapes. To date I have not received a listing ofsame. I suppose that R. Shlomo gave a number of teachings at theBeverly Hills Happy Minyan, of which Michael Ozair was (orremains) director.

----------------------------------------------------------------

A correspondent to the R. Shlmo list notes that R. ShlomoCarlebach came to South Africa on many occasions, under theauspices of Alon & Rina Teager. So that indicates that they musthave an extensive collection of teachings.

Apparently Staloff has been SCANning to Disc as ASCII; if so, he'sgot a darned good Scanner. He scanned at 200 dpi.
I assume he's been scanning to Disc, using extant input, becausesome of the articles appear in column-width, not full-page.]

CORRECTION; `Ayala Grafstein' [in my mis-spelling] is `AylaGrafstein'

In the Internatinal Herald Tribune, Wiley Miller has a cartoon ofthe Expulsion from the garden of Eden: "No, it's not apunishment, it's just a change in our Operating System.'

Pini Dunner, pk57@dial.pipex.com , produced some of the bestcommercial tapes I've heard of R. Shlomo Carlebach concerts withEnglish teachings.
He offers an article on his last Shabat with R. Shlomo.
Excerpts posted to LIST include this bit of preposterous bombast: "The strictly orthodox boycotted his concerts and banned hismusic."
Comment (sa): Unless that remark is understood as a tautology,it's not valid. Eg, clearly that was not the case in Israel; egclean-cut yeshiva bochers in those ridiculous British hatsregularly came to the Meor Modi'in concerts; many concerts wereseparate seating, and some of the chevre would be accounted quitestrictly orthodox.
He Adds:

"Even the usually inclusivist Lubavitch movement shunned him afterhe refused to comply with the late Rebbe's restrictions on hisstyle of performance."
Comment (sa): I'd not heard that he was shunned; and had heardthat he continued to attend Lubavitch gatherings on occasion;though I was told, by the same person -- someone at Modi'in,probably BZ or Haskala -- he would always stand in the back.
Nor was there a "refusal to comply"; R. SC makes that clear in theTikun interview; the Lubavitcher Rebbe abstained on the questionof R. Shlomo's teaching style.
------------------------------------------------------------
Waskow, commenting on Heschel's The Sabbath (1951) : "a day ofdetatchment from the vulgar"
[Not clear if that's Waskow's phrase or (I think) Heschel's;though I don't remember it from the latter; which rather remindsme of Thoreau's Walden (which Cavell likens to Jerimiah) ---------------------------------------------------------------

Yes. They are completely separate organizations. We have norelationship financially or otherwise. In fact, I did not knowthat there was a S.C. Foundation in Toronto.

Is either Foundation incorporated in the USA?
BK replies [loc. cit]: We (Israel) are not.

sa: If not, has its claim to be recognized as a tax-exempt nonprofit corporation been recognized by the USA IRS?
BK replies [loc cit.]
WE [ie, the Shlomo Carlebach Foundation, of which BK is Treasurer]are registered as a MALCAR in Israel. Tax exempt contributionsmade in the United States can be sent to PEF, (need to checkaddress) and to indicate on the check line that the donation isbeing made to the Shlomo Carlebach Foundation.

BK notes the officers, Board members, and Executive committe ofthe Shlomo Carlebach Foundation, Jerusalem, as:
Rabbi Joseph Schonwald, Chairperson
 BAtya Cohen Kallus, treasurer
Chana Leah Bogost, Secretary
Mimi Feigelson
