Summary:
This is the 1997 addition to my previous \inv9496r listings.
It does not supplant any previous listings.
However, particular entries may supplant previous entries.
Cutoff for this inventory was 2 Jun 97,
Rottenberg transcriptions are listed as inv_yr97

Caveat & restrictions:
I must again make clear that these inventory documents are not forgeneral publication; they include a large number of highlytentative, even momentary, opionions and speculations; those areonly my own worknotes.
Objective material -- ie listings -- may be distributed toall those working on R. Shlomo material.

David Dorsai writes me, 4/30/97, that selections are takenalmost entirely from the following:
	Holy Beggars' Gazette, 5732-5733 (1972-1973)
	Connections, 5745-5749 (1985-1989)
Congregation Kehilat Jakob News, 5750-5755 (1990-1995)
He also indicates that he works in MAC. So he will havedifficulty processing files not sent in ASCII.
---------------------------------------------------------------
I list the following as downloads from the Website.
The list includes as few extraneous files:
N.B.: David Stalaff remarked in his letter of 8 May 1997 to themailing list, that after scanning these teachings from HBG,Connections, and the Kehillat Jakob newsletter, some additionaleditting was in some cases introduced. That explains thediscrepancies I have elsewhere noted with text from HBG and CNS.

N.B.: Dates are merely dates of my donwolad; they are not datesof posting on Website, nor dates when the teachings was completedas presented.

5/97:
DS had written in a "Letter to the Reb Shlomo List" 8 May1997 that "the batch of Torah included with this message is thelast large batch that I can post to our list"
Two additional teachings were posted for Shavuot.
He adds: "Just about every tora that was distributed forfree or at cost during our Rebbe's lifetime has been mailed to thelist and posted to
   gopher://shamash.org/hh/judaica/rebshlomo/torah/
This gopher is no more than the gopher who goes fur the TimelyToras on the Website.
As of 2 June 1997 there were only 16 teachings here:

But I note many more R. Shlomo teachings than that in my veryincomplete listing of HBG and CNS (=inv0494b). Certainly morethan 70, taking into account that several journal teachings may becombined in one Website posting; and that a few of my listingswere not of teachings (eg 'Niggunim').
I also find many teachings, apparently from CNS and HGG, inthe reb-shlomo archives that are not, at least not now, posted onthe Website.

A command to listproc@shamash.org of index reb-shlomo notes thefollowing files available for afd-fui: log 9503, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9,10, 11, 12; log9601...9612; log9701...9705.
Of those, only the following seem to be teachings:

log9508: Shlomo Carlebach
log9512: Gut Yom Tov from the Rebbe

log9705: Reb Shlomo on Shabbos.

However, title of log is often only title of top lastposting, with previous ones packed under it, chronologically.

David Staloff is apparently trying to work in harmony withNC, and seems to made an agreeement such that that only previouslypublished teachings would be posted; and those would be postedonly with the assent of the transcriber.
I'm not clear whether all transcribers to HBG and CNSassented. Posted teachings seem in some cases to be much shorterthan the versions published in HBG + CNS. Kehillat Jakab newsalso assented.
And as detailed below, far fewer R. Shlomo teachings seem tohave been posted to the Website, than even my very incompletelistings of those teachings in HBG and CNS indicate.

A rationale for withholding non-published teachings isconveyed in a passing remark within a note transmitting shlomo.zipby DS 96/09/09 to the rebshlomo list:
l2

"All teachings are either in the public domain, or arereprinted with permission. The enclosed articles originallyappeared during the past ten years in Connections andCarlebach Shul bulletins. The Carlebach Foundation hasreserved the right to publish any transcriptions previouslyunreleased. "
l1

COMMENT: The last sentence is wildly unclear; and, insofar as itmight be clarified, may be wildly problematic.
The notion of 'public domain', introduced here, would seem toqualify the last sentence.
It is not clear, particularly in the absence of publishedminutes from any of the various branches of the CarlebachFoundation, what decision is referred to.
Nor is the distinction between NC and the CarlebachFoundation entirely clear; nor perhaps strictly maintained.
Nor is it clear which literary assets have been assigned, andby whom, to the Carlebach Foundation; nor whether the Foundationclaims certain assets not explicitly assigned to it.
Nor is it clear whether 'the right to publish' entails aright to withhold from publication; and if so, whether that rightto withhold from publication is time-limited -- in which case itwould constitute a sort of right of first refusal.
Any entity, individual or corporate, would seem to hold allrights to any assets duly assigned to its exclusive possession;except insofar as that assignment was duly qualified.
Nor is it presently clear to me whether the CarlebachFoundation is a public Foundation, a private Foundation, or somesort of hybrid.

Transcribers who assented, noted by DS in an acknowlegement, included Elana Rappaport Schachter, Louise Temple Barrett, SamIntrator, Rivka Haut. DS does not imply that any transcriberwithheld assent, and apologizes for inadvertantly omittinganyone's name.
Transcribers inadvertantly omitted were the following:
=nashchez.txt was transcribed in honor of Danielle Miriam, bySara.
=bach.txt was transcribed by Reuven Goldfarb, and publishedin Agudah Journal.

l2
COMMENT: It seems fair to say that at this stage thelimitation to further posting of teachings on the reb-shlomoWebsite is political, rather than logistic, and rather than aproblem of the lack of such teachings.
One hopes that this problem can be resolved, for it ishard to imagine anyone doing a better job, and in bettertaste, than that done by David Staloff.
However it must be added: A Website may serve manyfunctions, though these have some overlap. It may facilitatescholarly work, by distributing unpublished teachings amongstthose who wish to work on them; and it may facilitateeducation by distributing published teachings amongst thosewho wish to read them. So far this Website has primarilydone the latter.

Originals were scanned at 200 dpi and OCR'd. SOME ADDITIONALEDITTING WAS THEN INTRODUCED.

A few additional teachings have been posted, both directly andindirectly (ie, forwarded), to the reb-shlomo@shamash.org mailinglist, administered by David Staloff. This is a non-monitoredclosed subscription mailing list; for further details contactlistproc@shamash.org. The reb-shlomo site presently has 116 nonconcealed subscribers. I do not know how many if any concealedsubscribers it has.

Posted teachings -- apparently all available from the Website-- include:

"The Soul of Shabbos" . New York 5751.
"Gut Hodesh": New York, Iyar 5746.
Reb Mendel Rimanover -- HLP 5732

Ayala Graftstein has posted and forward several teachings:
5/22/97: Forward of the Bnei Jeshrun Pesach Sheni teachings;listed elsewhere (transcribed sa; previous transcription, collection HH).
	5/25/97: 4 brief excerpts on Rebbes, re-excerpted from=rebbes94.zip

THE ROTTENBERG HORDE:
This is a major find -- the largest horde of original tapesunearthed to date, as far as I know (which ain't far). But much inneed of maintenance, cataloguing, and transcription.
The Rottenberg Horde has been preserved, and I suppose wasrecorded, by Mr. Yaakov Rautenberg (corrected spelling) a FoundingMember of Moshav Meor Modi'in; a/ka/ Yaakov Rachmana (Israel)d/b/a J.J. Rautenberg (USA). Tel: 099-264-694.
It consists, he tells me, of 180 tapes; these were numbered, and listed, by Ben-Zion Solomon, and a copy of each made -- I donot know whether in realtime or fastdub.
Apparently several sets of copies wer made.
Mr. Rautenberg, who does not have a copy set of his owncollection, entrusted me, for transcription, with 6 of hisoriginals: YR050, YR 069, YR083, YR 105, YR108; YR190 (but tapeis labeled: YR61)
The tapes smell a bit of damp and must. Mr. Rottenberg spentthe winter of 96-97 in a tipi, and found that the carpetting driedquickly after each rainstorm, of which there were unusually manythat year.
Further listing of those tapes which I borrowed occurs below,	Mr. Rautenberg previously told me, as memory serves and as aSearch of =inv* for `Rottenberg' should confirm, that these tapesdate mostly from the HLP era.
Now a proper Carlebach Foundation would at least buy Mr.Rautenberg storage boxes for this collection.
Mr. Rautenberg carries a letterhead note from R. Shlomoauthorizing him to produce a book. The wording refers to'reminiscences', but presumably was not intended to excludeteachings.

l2
COMMENT:
I mentioned the risk of brush fires and the like -- eg,if the wind changed during a summer chamsin, this kibbutzcould be at real risk; Modi'in has also been at risk fromfires in past years; and the basements of Toronto couldflood, I suppose -- -- and the need to safely back up, insecure disperesed locations, all collections. Apparentlymany fear to give anyone else a copy of their collection. Isuggested the vault of a Swiss bank.

ANNUAL DON'T-EVERYONE ANSWER AT ONCE ARCHIVING PROJECT:
Summary: No responses. For about the 3rd year running.
A telephone followup would no doubt get responses.

4 April 97: Requests for update sent to the following:

R. David Zeller
Yakar
10 Rehov Ha-Lamed Heh
Old Katamon
Jerusalem
Particular interest: Repeating request for listing of Yakarcollection, especially since Yakar now states it has a 'videoroom' of R. Shlomo tapes.
	R. Shlomo gave many talks at Efrat, though probably mostly onShabbat. But some may be motzi shabbat. David Zeller is aslikely as anyone to know of those tapes. (Those would be Hebrewonly, I assume).
Mimi Feigelson is also on the staff of Yakar, and should havean exensive personal collection. She is probably one of the mostknowlegeable students of R. Shlomo's teachings.
Batya Cohen, married to Menachem Kallus, and living nearby, had served as Treasurer of the (Israel) Foundation, and worked atYakar; she should have some material.
As noted, Menachem Kallus has some teachings, including whathe described as a very good lecture at Yale.

---------------------------------------------------------------
Miriam Shifrin Drori
c/o Shifrin
POB 23678
Ramot
Jerusalem
Particular interest: She had at least some tapes which shesaid she would send me. She represented R. Shlomo in hisinterface with Russian Jewry; and might have or be able to locatesome tapes from those talks, including her own translation.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
R. Shalom Brod
HaNatziv 7C
(Nahalot)
Jerusalem
Particular interests: R. Shlomo Hagadah, His collection ofR. Shlomo material, previously stored in Canada

---------------------------------------------------------------
Tami Goshen Gottstein
24 Shimshon
(Baka)
Jerusalem
Particular interest: Corrections to my input of Yakartranscriptions; further info on Joel Glick collection; furtherYakar transcriptions; transcription of the SO HO NC tape by theNun at Abu Ghosh.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hatzkele & Hadassah Sasson
Moshav Meor Modi'in
Mevo Modi'in
73122
Particular interest: Their HH collection of transcripts, allor most from the HLP, ie 70s. Some of those were partially inputby Ruven Gilmore, I have the input, but the files emerge a bittruncated (by conversion, I suppose), and I have had to guess theSources. In some case source is almost certain; in other cases, presently uncertainable.
I have given them a copy of most of my input, with theexception of \WITTTURF, \WITTWEDS, AND \WED1094.
Hatzkele made corrections on one of my transcripts -- it wasthe teachings, from B'nei Jeshrun I think, described as aboutChildren -- he said that some of those corrections significantlycorrected the sense of what I had transcribed -- and I think inputthem. Copy requested. Also noted corrections on othertranscripts, but apparently did not input. Not yet on E-mail;will be in about 6/97.

----------------------------------------------------------------
R. Joe Schoenwald
24 Shimson
(Baka)
Jerusalem
	Particular interest:
As previously noted, he has an extensive collection of R.Shlomo appearances at his shul in Oakland. He and TGG have saidthey were almost entirely singing, but I'm sure R. Shlomo wouldalways include some teachings. At last query, he had not listednor backed up that collection.
He serves as head of Israel Carlebach Foundation, and seemsto have taken as his primary responsibility, representing theinterests of the Carlebach children, and maybe NC. Diplomatic andopen-minded; a rational interface.
Primary interest: One would hope that he, at least, would beable to obtain a listing of the NC Collection, and would be ableto ensure that the NC collection, which includes some very oldtapes (8-inch, from HLP days) is at least properly housed (dustproof, damp-proof, EMF-damage-proof) and backed up.
At last rumour, the NC collection was in boxes in the NChouse in Toronto.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Ben-Zion Solomon
Moshav Meor Modi'in
73122
Particular interests: Hallel book, 2nd Carlebach songbook. Probably the most professional of us. Fluent with internet andsuch. Solid orthodox credentials.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Abe Rice
c/o Rice
2814 Hatan Sofer -- POB 331
Emanuel
Shomron
Israel
Claims to have a very extensive collection of tapes, and tobe expert in computer; I've not heard back from him.
E-mail address listed on reb-shlomo list.
================================================================
Carlebach Foundation
POB 2543
Jerusalem 91023
I still don't know who picks up the mail; what mailings ifany are sent out to hoi polloi or even elite; and what happens towhatever money comes in. Nor who all the officers are.
HannaLeah Bogost had served as secretary, and apparentlytried to catch up on correspondence. R. Joe Shoenwald isPresident, as far as know. R. Yoshua Witt resigned. Ben-Zionmay be on it.

Shlomo Center
c/o Dr. Joshua Ritchie
24 Bayit Vegan
Jerusalem
Doing good work, but I'm not sure what. Don't wish to imposeon the time of a Doctor, they deal with real problems.
Ze'ev Ritchie, now married, constitutes a seperate center, having produced several books.
I did input his Get High, =gethai, but did not input theearlier one, though I did list it. I think it was he who inputthe wedding book; I gave away my copy, though I think I input thefew teachings in it, if they were new.
=================================================================
R. Zusha Frumin
Moshav Meor Modi'in
Mevo Modi'in
73122
I rather doubt he has anything. He does have smicha from R.Shlomo, so may have materials I've not yet noted.
Rbtzn. Rachel Frumin signed off to EW on any claim to a bookof R. Shlomo teachings about children, which I had sketched fromher concept.
N.B.: Mordechai haLevy, at Modi'in, also has smicha from R.Shlomo; he's very intellectual, and may have a collection ofteachings.
================================================================
HannaLeah Bogost
100 Rehov Ein Kerem
Ein Kerem
Jerusalem
Particular interest: Had some tapes which, if memory serves, she had said she'd copy to me, a year or so ago. Was close toR. Shlomo, and so may have some memoirs of value. Encouraged herto write same.
===============================================================

Alon & Reena Teager
85 9th Ave.
Highlands North
JHB 2192
South Africa
E-mail address listed on reb-shlomo list.

They should have some materials, though probably not much. But at least some materials from R. Shlomo appearances in (Unionof) South Africa, which Alon Teager arranged. I only know of oneof those, =pretoria, currently available.
4/25/97: Yaakov Rautenberg tells me that Alon Teager hasabout 500 tapes of R. Shlomo teachings/singing, of which, he says,Reena Teager has transcribed about 130 stories, and 3 toras (longteachings, possibly full tapes).
I seem to have also noted that they transcribed 12-15weddings; those were probably part of the Wedding project, included in the Witt collection, since they worked on it.

Alon Teager had supervised the Wedding transcription projectat Modi'in, so it's possible he has some material we don't havehere, but I think that was checked and re-checked. Most was lostin a Drive A breakdown.

Congregation Kehilat Jakob
305 W. 79 St.
New York, NY 10024
Att: R. Sam Intrator
I believe R. Shlomo's libary is still housed there, but NCmay have carted away boxes of teachings; haven't heard clearly.
One assumes they have extensive teachings; don't know what.
There is no indication that R. Sam Intrator maintains acomputer data-base of teachings.

David Staloff
495 West End Ave. Apt. 4F,
New York, NY 10024
dovid@dorsai.org

	Produced and manages the Website.
The only address in NYC I presently know of for housing inputR. Shlomo Carlebach teachings.

==================================================================

R. Meir Fund
1049 E. 13 St.
Brooklyn, NY 11230
He does have some teachings which he said he'd send me;haven't heard yet.
I had hoped that he would know about the B'nei Jeshruncollection, which should be extensive -- R. Shlomo apparently gavea lecture series there -- but I think the roof fell in, and/orthere was a fire, so some material may have been lost.
===============================================================
R` Elana Schachter
6723 Emlen St.
Philadephia, PA 19111
rabbielana@AOL.com
Internet posting =elana.htm, subsequently removed, indicatedshe is or was trying to to a definitive wedding book and/orwedding teachings project. Reminded her of \WED1094, which I sentto Carlebach Foundation, and to NC, upon completion ca. 10/94.
Tentative plans to produce a wedding book in Israel, 1997-98.
================================================================
Reven Gilmore:
5/97: Spoke briefly. He apparently has not input anyadditional material, but hopes to find time to do so.
CORRECTION: Not all his input is from the HH collection;some was his own transcripts, and some from other sources.
He did that input in Write for Windows.
Will try to work in ASCII henceforth.

L2
COMMENT:
Yael is brilliant, professional, and ethical; her firstbook of Shlomo stories is up to the highest standard ofcommercially viable work. The flip side is a certain loss inauthenticity. But it can serve as a benchmark of possibleprofitability, especially as it hit the stands about 1/95,with demand at its highest.
So in short, nothing else is likely to make nearly asmuch money, and I doubt Yael got rich on the book.
She must have some collection of materials; havereceived no reply to previous letters.

========================================================== = ===
NC:
No enquiry sent. Said to be working on a Wedding book,and/or a book on months; no further details available.
The Wedding book project would be the same that was startedby Alon Teager, then handed off to the Witts, then handed off toElana Schachter &/or taken back by NC. It could have beenpolished off at any one of those stages. I sketched =wed1094.zipas one approach to it; not sure who, if anyone, read same.
I would guess that material for the book on Months is largelywhat I pulled out for on a PS a year or so ago. At the time Iremarked that there was not enough material. EW would haveaugmented it from material I don't have in my data-base, but Istill doubt that there's enough input.
Eg, I just recently bumped into the first teaching onMarchesvan (sh_yr083).
It is not clear that NC makes much use of a computer-storedcollection of teachings in this work. Since this is essentiallya project of compilation, working from hardcopy rather than inputwould add years to the task, and increase its logistic complexity, maybe past the point where anyone but a disciplined scholar couldmanage it.

NEW LISTINGS OF TEACHINGS ON AUDIO TAPE:

Yaakov Rautenberg
	Yaakov Rachmana, a/k/a J.J. Rautenberg
	Tel: 099--264-694 (Israel

He lent me (sa) 4/25/97 originals of the following:
Numbering is by Ben-Zion Solomon:
----------------------------------------------------------------
%YR050
	SONY EF90, Marked YR50, 15th of Av,
Side B marked: Songs, 15th Av, Modi'in, Very Good
Tape %yr050, Rottenberg Horde; Yakov Rachmana, Hordemaster
G1: Sony EF90, Type I
G2: realtime copy of G1 onto TDK J90 Type I
G1 Labeled: Side A: 15th of Av
             Side B: Songs/ 15 ?One? / Moddim / Very good
This is a good enough tape to package and sell. Recording qualityconsistently high.
Mostly songs; all familiar. Short teachings in Hebrew; veryshort teachings in English.
	NOTES INPUT AS: =sh_yr050

------------------
%YR069
	Sony EF90
Side A notation: Hebrew: Can't make it out.
Side B writing, English, faded; may have been fromoverwritten tape.
Place: Witts
Date: Within the 9 days; possibly late evening of 9 Av
Year: Avi is living on the roof, and Dari, and also Tiki, areyoung enough that R. Shlomo worries about them out alone at night. So maybe ca. 1990.
Crowd: Chevre
Level: Serious, intermediate, no songs. English only (withHebrew quotes).
	Blockout for transcription as =sh_yr069.wip
However, the notes I took were realtime, so they are not yetreliable as transcription.

--------------------------------------------------------
%YR083
The Box is Waltham (Munchen) ferro LH 90; but the tape is TDKD90 EG 120s (that is: milliseconds; not micrograms).
Side A is labelled: Open Center
Side B is labelled: Best of Best -- 4.
It may have been recorded over a recording of same.

The label on the box has a note: To Shlomo: Do you rememberthis. Subsequently you recorded some of these songs.
Side B notation of box label reads: This was in Grossinger aftera concert. (Hebrew sccrip:) NLHR NB?NN [qv] is on hone?? and someother stuff. Please keep in touch. Emeas wedding is on (Hebrw)YLN LlOL. HOpe to see you.

---------------------------------------------------------------
%YR105
No English teachings.
A number of short Hebrew teachings, with Yakov Rottenberg notes asvery good. SO THE HEBREW SHOULD BE TRANSCRIBED.
ONlyone new niggun, and, though it's unusual, I don't think it'sworht transcribing -- too gung ho.
It's a short tape: 30 minutes Side A; about 15 minutes side B.
Neither the performance nor the sound quality was very good.

	Maxwell LN 60 Type II
Hanuka -- lst night -- Menorah?
Side A notes in Hebrew script: could make it out with effort
Side B noted: New niggun. Lo Tarshi?

------------------------------------------------------
%YR108
	JVC, F1/90, Dynarec, Type I
Side A labeled clearly: Shlomo on (I) Tshuva, (II) Mar
Chesvan, (III) Chanuka. Added note, probably YR: Gevalt.
Side B labeled: Shlomo, Chunak, continued; (IV) Tehillim119.
INPUT: =sh_yr108.
Date/place/venu not stated.
Level: Intermediate, or advanced-intermediate.
	Hebrew is used freely.
R. Shlomo speaking softly, steadily, clearly to a group of seriousstudents. Without dramatics.

This is not one teaching, but a group of teachings. HOwever, they all seem to have been primarily dicatated to tape, notprimarily addressed to a group. A group is present for the firstpart; but does not appear present for subsequent parts.

MY GUESS IS this was the tape dictated for Yael & Tzlotana.

PART I is on Tchuva. It appears to be pre-Yom Kippur.
PART II focuses on Sukkot - Simchat Tora. It appears to bebetween Yom Kippur and Sukkot.
PART III in on MARCHESVAN. This is the first teaching Irecall having bumped into on MarChesvan; so it fills a gap ifanyone wants to compile teachings for each month. Teaching seemsto have been given after Sukkot and before MarChesvan.
PART IV is a short teaching of Pslam 119, Ashrei. It is lessthan half audible.
	There are no songs.
---------------------------------------------------------------
%YR190
Box numbered: 190; but tape labeled: YR 61.
Tape & box are both Lahama.
Tape and box both labeled 21-12-97
In short, the Tape is what the Box says it is.
Lahama, Hi Fi Low Noise L&M C90
	21-12-77
	Shlomo Nehemia's Wedding (to Devora-leh)
Cover noted: Listened too 2/24/96, Yakov, had to send notes.
	Tape labeled only: 21-12-79

There is some unusual chanting on this tape, which might, with reenhancement (because it's nearly at threshhold) be excerpted foran audio tape of R. Shlomo wedding teachings & songs.

The tape was transcribed by Alon Teager, input lost in the Drive Acrash, output saved into the collection of R. Joshua Witt, numbered by me as W/S-D.

FURTHER NOTES 5/20/97:

Hatzkala says that the B'nei Jeshrun lectures were a series of 3,apparently all transcribed -- he thinks that the large handwrittennotebook, apparently held now by the Witts -- though I thought Ihad made a xerox and given it to him -- includes that transcript.
So Kdoshim, 5/05/76, which I transcribes as =sh76050a, b; wasthe 2nd of 3; and Pesach Sheni, which I transcribed as=sh97051a,b; was the 3rd of 3.

----------------------------------
BZ remarked that there are a large number of songs composedby SC that are not even generally known to have been by him, letalone published.

COMMENT:
I do think that at some point we get out of copyright andinto folk-music. After all, all folk-songs were oncecomposed by someone. At some point, material would seem topass into general culture.
