A NOTE ON TRANSLITERATION

COMMENT: Ben-Zion Solomon and Velvel Pasternak use somewhatdifferent transliteration systems.

In general, the only possible way to list song titles is inHebrew.
I've sketched a "English-to-Hebrew 1-to-1 transliterationsystem": (that is: given that the English is been derived bytransliteration from the Hebrew, each `significant' ASCIIcharacter in the English legally translates back into only 1Hebrew character) and tried it with these titles; for details ontransliteration see =shmtrlit, which is obsoleted by thisdocument.

I've in general tried as far as possible without breaking my rulesto accommodate the transliterations given both by Pasternak (whouses Israeli-Sephardi) and Ben-Zion (who uses Ashkenazi, forreasons he explains in his introduction).
My transliterations could have been somewhat simpler and moreconsistent had I not done so; ie not inserted inessential nonsignificant vowels.

My essential rules of transliteration are the following:
l3
A) The object of this exerise is to produce a transliteration thancan be unequivocally mapped back, eg by a simple computerprogram without dictionary, to its Hebrew original
l4
That presupposes that the transliteration was produced bythis system.
My system does not generate a unique English transliteration.
By `unique' and synonymously by 'unequivocal' I mean: underthe rules of the system, a given word transliteratesinto one and only one possible equivalen.
l3
B) By 'sigificant' I mean: maps back to a Hebrew character.
C) I transliterate significantly only the standard modern Hebrewalphabet, as given on a computer keyboard and inEinsteinWriter; ie, without any nekudot.

1) Symbols defined by ASCII value; hence lower-case are neveridentical to upper-case.
2) Symbols are divided into significant and non-significant;significant map back to a Hebrew character; non-significantdo not.
3) The same letter is used for regular and sofeet forms; when thatletter occurs as the last in a word [in search terms: isfollowed by a space ], it is mapped back to the sofeet form.
4) Aleph is A; Bet is B or v ; Vav is V, O, or U (I further chooseto use only V as the prefix 'and'; but that decision does notaffect mapping-back-(to Hebrew); Yud is Y or I; Tet is t (soTav is T ); Samech is s (so Shin is Sh or S); Ayin is `(backwards apostrophe, = left half-quote).
L4
I `choose' not to allow E for Aleph; that is a `nonsignificant decision'; ie, one could allow it withoutaffecting transliteration back from English to Hebrew.

5) Peh is P or F
6) All capital letters are significant
7) No lower-case vowels are significant
8) The following lower-case consonants are significant:  t (=Tet), v (= Bet when it must be given the sound of v );
9) The following lower-case consonsants are used, but nonsignificant: h (used in Ch ,Kh and Sh ) and z (used inTz)
10) The use of z in Tz for Tzadeh is significant; althoughthe z is not significant. [That is, to a computer: T istransliterated as Tav, except that if followed by z, itis transliterated as Tzadeh.] This is an inelegantconcession to customary usage.
The use of h is non-significant and non-essential; thatis, if it were omitted, the transliteration back toHebrew would not be affected.
11) The only essential non-Roman ASCII character used is ` ,for Ayin.
12) To prevent confusion with the backwards-apostrophe(Ayin), I forgo using the regular apostrophe ' . I useinstead a hyphen (which is non-significant). I chooseto use it only for grammatic clarity (to set offprefixes and suffixes), and not for to mark an unvowel'd consonant (nekuda : ); but that's Dealer'sChoice (`Dealer's Choice' `a non-significantdecision')
13) In dealing with Yiddish, I've allowed a fewmodifications, to accomodate usual transliteration:
	(Y1): 2 Vav's can be W, although that breaks the EH1-1rule (1-English-symbol-yields-1-Hebrew-symbol), sounless the 2 Vav's stem from a Roman W, 2 V's arebetter.
(Y2): Ayin should be rendered E (capital E), notapostrophe; otherwise the text hiccups.
(Y3): Quf can be rendered k (lower-case k), otherwiseone winds up with eg QoTzQer for kATzker (Kotzker).
However, Aleph can't be rendered neither upper norlower-case O, since upper-case is used as a possiblevalue for Vav, and lower-case is non-significant.
Again, neither upper nor lower-case S is allowable forTet, since those are used by Shin and Samechrespectively.

I'd hope that by listing titles from reliable collections of musicnotation, that a standard index could be compiled; referred to egas Za1 , P1, etc. (that is: the first entry in the Ben-Zion acollection, or the Pasternak collection)

.p

With only one lapse, Ben-Zion builds on the Pasternak collection;that is, when he finds a new version of a title noted byPasternak, he gives it the next-sequential number.
Ben-Zion also provides a musical index, in graphic notation, inthe given key. I've elsewhere tried to suggest how musicalnotation can be digitalized in a way independent of key andindependent of introductory phrases.
Ben-Zion details the place of each text in the liturgy, and in atleast some cases gives its biblical or other source.

What I'm sketching here should go into a data-base -- even Lotus1A would do -- such that one could reference any listed song oncassette to a published transcription.
Even this text file will do for a search, but it won't genrateSORTs.
I need to then input the following: Hebrew title, digital musicalindex of title in my literal notation; digital musical index oftitle in numeric interval notation.
I've tried to do that for Ben-Zion's graphic musical index, in aseperate document; =sh_dmind .
I've now added those entries to this document; but a more detaileddescription of the notational systems I use is in sh_dmind.
I don't know music; I don't understand what a minor key is; SoI've only used my digital system for major keys, where I thoughtmyself sure of the tonic; since tonic is set=0.
When I start by remarking eg "F sharp, C sharp", that just meansthat the key signature called for sharping those notes; it doesn'tindicate the key signature (which I state, where I can, as Majoror Minor, never without one or 'tother). Eg, when I say "F sharp"I mean the key of G major, I think.

I'LL NOT ATTEMPT TO WRITE A MUSICAL INDEX OF UNINDEXED SONGS,UNLESS I BUMP INTO THEM ON TAPE; A MUSICIAN SHOULD DO THAT.

I'm just trying to sketch how this can be done; others can do it.

I use O or U for Vav when it is used as a vowel
This is just for grammatic clarity; it doesn't affect transliteration back to Hebrew
