Warsaw to Lublin -- Second Day in Poland.  Reb Shlomo Carlebachspeaking:  January 1989.   


 ... Someone says to me, 'How can you go back to Poland?'  So Isaid to him, 'Whatever you tell me bad, it's more reason for me togo.
	... It's clear to me ... loving or hateing -- it's in thehadns of G-d. Obviously, 50 years ago, ... G-d locked the doors oflove all over the world ... the 6 million ... opened the gates ofheaven, the gates of love again {jwp3n1}

 ... the question is only are we taking advantage or are we'krechtsing' or crying because yesterday it was not open. 		... Reb Nachman says that as times go by, the world is moresick, but the doctors are getting better... even medically, thespiritual and the physical are one... in medicine... unbelievablethings ae happening ... but also spiritually, unbelievable thingsare happening -- and people who were maybe hopEless a hundredyears ago, today they're just ordinary patients ... there are 2kinds of rabbis ... the doctor rabbi {ie, typical ba'al tchuvarosh yeshiva} says ... you have to change, got to take a haircut,and you have to have long sleeves -- and you have to do tchuvafirst. 	... When you hug someone, you are already putting them in theright place.  You kiss someobody, it's even deeper... And younever know -- you don't know -- the person you're talking to --what level they are on at that moment ... {eo} ... Maybe at thismoment, one good word saves their life  ... Because everybodywants the world to be better.  Nobody wants the world the way itis.  The only thing is, nobody shows them a picture of a betterworld.  We can walk around and show them some good pictures.  ... 

Teaching of Reb Henoch of Alexander

It says 'Hashamyim shamayim l'hashem v'ha'arets natan livne Adam'(from Hallel Psalms).  The Heilege Reb Henoch'l of Alexander {whois buried on the way from Warsaw to Worke} He says, 'Heaven is 
G-d's and the earth is from Man' -- Heaven is already heaven, madeby G-d, but the earth is for man -- that we have to make it intoheaven.  ... I just hope we can make it a little heaven for thepeople while we meet them, and hopefully G-d will reward us andmake our lives also more heavenly 

At Lublin:  Reb Shalom Shachna

 ... {eo} The Helage Reb Sholem Shochna.  The gravestone is 430years.  That means he lived about 500 years ago.  That time thegreatest Rabbi in the world was the Maharam of Padua, Reb Meir ofPadua.  Padua is in Italy.  I'm not sure if he learned in Padua orif at that time he learned in Cracow.  ... But he learned togetherwith the Maharam of Padua.  The Maharam of Padua was after that,one of the greatest in the world.  
	His name was Reb Shalom Shachna of Lublin.  He became thegreatest.  The whole way we are learning Torah, is mamsh like hepaved a new way of learning.  It's like unbelievable depth andsharpness.  And then he opened a Yeshiva in Lublin and all thegreatest people came to learn from him.  But the very greatestpeople to learn from him was the Ramah, where we'll see tomorrowin Cracow, Reb Moshe Isserles, who became finally his son-in-law. And  the saddest thing in the world is, nebech, that he was theson-in-law only for a few years, because his wife, her name wasGoldie, who passed away when she was 20 years old ... But hisgreatest pupil, besides the Ramah, was the Reb Heiliga Rashsal,Reb Shloimo Luria.
	OK, he was mamash the Rebbe of all of Israel at that timebecause, later on, the greatest rabbis fsrom all over the world,all learned from him.  ... He {who } says, light was shining therelike the sun and there were no clouds as long as he was alive.' Reb Shsloam Schachna... left word to every Jew:  until Mashiach iscoming, whoever has mamsh {JWP3n3}'tsores' (troubles)
he should come and pray by his grave.  And the Seer of Lublin,whenever anybody ever came or was mamsh in trouble, he said,'You've got to go to the grave of Reb Shlome Shachna.' {JWP3n4}
	So one time, someone was mamash already like half in theother world {JWP3n5}
it was like mamash at the end.  So the Seer of Lublin says, 'Youhave to run to the grave of Reb Shalom Shachana and pray.'  Sothey asked him, 'But today is om Tov.'  And everybody knows{JWP3n6}, on Yom Tov, the Neshamas (souls) of the tzadkikim aregoing all the way up to Gan Eden (paradise).  So he says, 'Hemight not even know that we are at his grave, because it's YomTov. {JWP3n7}

So he's going all the way up.  So he says, 'Even if the neshamagoes up, a certain part of the neshama is staying here.' {JWP3n8}
And he says, 'the little part of the neshama of Reb ShalomShachana which is staying in this world has more power than allthe neshamas all together." {JWP3n9}
	Ok, Reb Shalom  Schachana passed away on the first day ofKislev in the year Shin Yud Tet'.  Can you figure out how long agothis was?  1559.  We visited his grave.  We were there. {JWP3n10}
	Thre is a Torah from Reb Shalom Shachana.  It's a little onthe funny side.  He says, 'How come that in former good days,Poland had only 5/6000 soldiers, .  And today {JWp3n11}
they have 30,000?  In former good days, they had these hugecannons they are working with...they had such big weapons, theydidn't need so many soldiers.  But today they walk over with alittle pistol, so they have more.  So he says like this, 'Informer good days, they had unbelievable great rabbis.  Becausethey mamsh carried the whole Torah with them.  So there were justa few great rabbis.  Today everybody carries a little pistol withthem {JWP3n12}, so we have so many rabbis, he sasys ... 'Today thekoach (strength) haTorah is not there anymore.  He said it in hisday (1500s).
                                         
The Seer of Lublin  (1)

	Ok, here come the Heilige Seer of Lublin.  He {text notspecified} says, there was nothing hidden before his holy eyes. Not sthe secrets of the Torah, not the secrets of the world, notthe secrete of every human being.  It was clear ruach haKodesh(prophecy). {JWP3n13} He say everything, maash a man of G-d.  Thewhole world called him the 'Chozeh haKodesh', the Holy Seer.

He says, he mamash had the privilege of having followers that ...brought light into the world, with their holiness and their beingready to give their lives for everything.  Now he recounts thehighest talmidim (students) .  The first one was the Yid haKodesh. And like the Seer of Lublin, all of Yiddishkeit comes from him.

Reb Dovid Lelover

	You know, Pschysche and Kotsk and Ger, and Ishbitser, this isa whole dynasty.  Then the other one is Reb Dovid Lelover.  RebDovid Lelover is again a different way in serving G-d.  Reb DovidLelover -- the whole thing, they don't say so much Torah; for themthe most important thing is loving Yidden, mamash, geverlich!  Yousee what it is, the Yid haKodesh also loved Yidden, but he wasalso saying Torah.  Reb Dovid Lelover, was the greatest lover inthe world, but he said very little.

Reb Berele of Rodashitz

	Then comes the heilage Reb Berele of Rodashitz.  Gevaldt.  InRodashitz, the whole thing was mamash to perform miracles.  Theysaid, 'What the Baal Shem Tov performed miracles in a year, theheilage Reb Berele of Rodashitz performed, maybe in a day...Hesays, 'He came to the world just to show the world that there isone G-d.'
	I'll tell you a good story about the Heilage Rodishitzer. The Heilage Alexanderer was besides being a pupil of the HolyVorker, was also a pupil of the heilage Rodishitser.  One time hecame into the Rodishitser, and a rich man came ____ and brought tothe Rodishitzer a golden plate.  So the heilage Roedishitzer says,'Alexanderer, call in my Rebbetsin, fast.'  He called in theRebbetsin , and he says, 'Here is a golden plate.'  He put somefood onto the plate, then he and his wife took two spoons and theyate together out of this plate.  The Alexanderer was standingthere, so he said, let me explain to you what's happening:

	'I want you to know, before I became a rebbe, I was so poor. we had mamash nothing. {JWP3n14}

Not only we had nothing to eat, we just didn't even have plates. One day we had not eaten in three days.  And a neighbor came,someone, and gave my wife a potato.  So my wife was so happy thatshe has a potato; she'll make a little soup, we'll have somethingto eat.  But she had no pot, so she went to a neigbhor.  "Could Ihave a pot, to make some potato soup?'  But nebach, this neighborwas too poor to have a pot.  So this neighbor said, "I want you toknow, I just borrowed a pot from another neighbor .. {eo} So inthe meantime, that person, the neighbor whom she borrowed the potfrom, went into the house, and said, 'Give me back my pot.'  Shesaid, 'I gave it to the wife of Reb Berele.'  She said, 'What,those dirty people, you gave my pot?'  She ran in  to Reb BereleRodshitzers's house, there was only one potatoe,; they hadn'teaten in three days .. {eo}  She took the pot and threw the potatoand the soup on the ground, and said, 'Don't you dare use my cleanpot', and she ran out.  When his wife saw this, she says to me 'Ican't bear this humiliation anymore.  I just can't. {JWP3n15}
So Rebe Berele says, 'I promise you, you and I will eat out ofgolden plates, one day.'  So he says, 'When the Yid brought megolden plates, I wanted to eat together with my Rebbetsin.' Gevaldt.

	Ok, the Rodashitzer, his whole thing was to perform miracles. And he and Kotsk were so to speak, very big enemies.  Officially,nobody nows why, but it was like that.  Wait, it's not so simple. Wait - let me tell you the story.
	So when the Heilage Kotsker was very sick, he needed mamash amiracle.  You go to Rodashitz ... {eo} So he sent his Rebbetsin tothe Holy Rodashitzer and he told her to say, 'My husband says, asmuch as he's not so much of a srvant of G-d, and he's mamashlacking everything, but G-d should have compassion on him and curehim.'  He didn't say anything,   Menachem Mendel ben Faigala.  Sothe Holy Rebbetsin walks in.  The Rodishitzer looks at thekivittel, and says, 'Why, your husband says he's not a servant ofG-d?  Oi vei, I wish I would serve G-d like your husband.'  But hesays, "Tell your husband, the difference between me and him, thedifference bewtween me and him is, that your husband works so hardon Yidden.  They should listen to G-d.  And I'm working so hard onG-d that he should listen to Yidden.'  Gevaldt.  So the KotskerRebbe sent word back to him.  'The Heilage Rodishitzer,' he says,'instead of me wasting time that Yidden do tsuvah, why don't youtell G-d just to bring Meshiach?'

The Yismach Moshe

	OK, the Heilage Lubliner:  some more pupils -- Another greatpupil was the Yismach Moshe.  You know, the Satmer's grandfather. You have to realize, he's not counting just names.  Each of themtook everything from the Seer of Lublin and yet in actuality, theyare completely different ways of serving G-d.  The Yismach Moshewas something else.   The Yismach Moshe was a great Kabbalist. And he was one of the only, besides, the Komaraner, who wouldmamash give out 'kamayos', little talismans;.  He knew exactly thecombinations of G-d's name.  Mamash like you hang it on your neck,but this is heavy stuff.
	I'll tell you an unbelievable story.  You know the HolySanzer was also, all the big rebbes, were great kabbalists.  Butvery few of them really ... they only wanted to pray.  They didn'twant to play tricks on G-d, so to speak. {JWP3n16}
So to speak, they had G-d in their hands.  They knew thecombination of G-d's name.{JWP3n17}
and they could mamash hang something on your neck to cure you, butthey didn't want to.  But then the Heilige Ropshister had agrandson, his name was Reb Chaim Naftali.  And he was like,beyond.  Maybe, beyond even being a rebbe.  And there are lettersfrom him that he wrote to people -- "I'm writing you now to letyou know, in seven years," which it happened already after he wasnot in this world. ... ' to let you know that in seven years fromnow, on this very day, your house can be on fire, so be verycareful.'  You know, things like this, unbelievable. {JWP3n18}
             
You now, he lived in Yerushalyim, somehow, he just made it byhimself.  His wife and his children somehow didn't make it withhim.  And he had a person taking care of him.  He mamash hadnothing to do with people, he just wanted to serve G-d on his own.And every day he was davining on the roof for hours.  Nobodyreally paid attention to him. But there wasa a rich woman and herhusband and a daughter living in the same area in Yerushalyim, inMea She'arim.  And somehow the woman noticed that he was agevaldt.  So every day she brought him food.  Her husband was achassid of another Rebbe and he was always saying, 'don't botherwith him.  I don't think he's completely there.  He's standing onthe roof.  He looks up at the sky.  I don't think he's completelythere.'  
He (Reb Chaim) says, 'No, something terrible happened.  Theirdaughter was engaged, and nebech, she was jsut about to bemarried.  And suddenly one day, she had a nervous breakdown.  Butnot a quiet nervous breakdown.  She was mamash wild.  Mamash ifthey wouldn't put her in chains, G-d forbid, she could kill peopleand  break everything .. {JWP3n20}

And he went to all the rebbes and it didn't help.  Finally theHeilege Reb Chaim called in the woman that brought him his food. He said, 'I want you to know, I can't see your pain anyomre, and Ican't see the sadness of yhour daughter.  She's so beautiful.'  Hesays, 'I want you to know something,   I can cure her.  But thisis so heavy, this is something I can only do once in my life. Only once in my life, I can help a person like this.  So the firstthing is, you have to swear to me, and your husband, that nobodywill know that I cured her.  I am going to give her a 'kamaya',and mamsh she can not take it off.  Only with G-d's help, she'llget married and she'll go to the mikve, you can take it off butnever more than a few minutes.  It has to be on her.  But the mostimportant thing is you mamash have to swear that nobody will knowthat I gave this to you.'....Anyway, her husband was really achassid of another rebbe and he wasn't so much into it, {JWP3n21}

but anyway they both came over and swore, to give theim thiskamaya, they hung it on their daughter.  And it was like ... shewoke up from a dream.  'What's going on?' {JWP3n22} 

You know they took off the chain, and she was absolutely thesweetest girl in the world again, you know.  Mamash 100%.  In themeantime, I don't want to say anything bad, but you never know whoyour friend is.  In the Bais Medrash, where he awas davining wasfrom another rebbe right ... {eo}  So they said to him, 'whathappened suddenly that your daugher is well again?'  So he says,'I cannot tell you.'   And then you know, some people are lowpeople. {JWP3n23} 

And one of them said, ' I noticed that she had something on herneck.' {JWP3n24} 

A few minutes later, the daughter came to bring her father homefor dinner.  This chassid went up and tore off the kamaya from herOy ... And she was standing there outside, didn't say anything; They opened the kamaya and in the kamaya, there was just the namesof three water carriers in Yerushalyim.  Obviously, lamid vavtzadikim (of the 36 hidden righeous ones).  But at that verymoment, all the chassidim started laughing.  They said, 'The onlyone that could be so crazy is this Naftali Chaim who stands onthge roof and is crazy.  And are you so _______ to hang this onyour daughter's neck?'  At this meoment she broke loose again, andshe was never cured again ... {eo} Gevaldt ... {eo} {JWP3n25}
	Reb Naftali Chaim was the Robpshitzers grandson.  Out of allof Djikov, he was the greatest.  He was the biggest Baal Mofes(miracle worker).  He was not a rebbe, he didn't want chassidim. We were learning about the Yismach Moshe who was giving outkamayas.  But the kamayhas, Yismch Moshe's kamayas were all soawesome.  I don't know any story this moment, but I know only thatthe Yismach Moshe had a certain part of his desk where he had thekamayas and the told people that they are playing with their livesif they open it. {JWP3n26} 

A kamaya is a talisman, you hang it on your neck, and it has allkinds of names of angels, and combinations of G-d's name.  Youknow, this is not for us to mingle in.  You know, today whenpeople go for an intensive kabala weekend this is a joke ... {eo} They had a certain knowlege of the secrets of the world.
	This was only prayers, tears over every word.  Let me tell yosomething, all these kamays, he most proably went to the mikve 100times, and purified himself, praying, 'Master of the World, let ithelp.' {JWP3n27}

The Meor v'Shemesh

	The Meor v'Shemesh was one of the sweetest in the world.  InKracow there was a baker, and he had a little boy whose name wasKalmish'l.  And this little boy Kalmish'l was absolutely mamash onfire.  He was shining from one corner of the world to the other. And his parents had no money to send him to cheder.  So he washelping his father im making bagels.  And one day, a rich manwalked in to buy some bagels, so he saw this Kamish'l. {JWP3n28}

"What a good little boy,' you know.  Are you doing something?  Aeyou sending him to cheder" "I have no money to send him tocheder."  So the Yid said, "What's going to be with him?  He lookslike a gevaldt boy.  Do me a favor, let me adopt him and I willpay for his learning and let him come to my house."  He was 5/6years old.  The rich man adopted him.  And then he married hisdaughter.  So the wedding was mamash on the Bar Mitzvah.  When theHeilage Meor v'Shemesh was bar Mitzva his wife was 12 years old. A few days older .. But the cutest thing in the world was, everymorning when they woke up he would go to yeshiva, and she hadalready covered her hair when she was 12.  So they were walkingthrough the ghetto 5 o'clock, in Kracow in the morning.  He wouldgo to the Bais Medrash, and she would go to her cheder.  But thenhe went to the Heilage Rebbe, Reb Elimelech, and his thing was,when he was 15/16 years old she was one of the people who wouldtake care of Rebbe Reb Elimelech at night.  So one night she wasbringing tea to the Rebbe Reb Elimelech and he saw somebody elsesitting there by the table, and it looked like it was not fromthis world.  And he said to Reb Elimelech, 'Who is this sitting bythe table with you'  Reb Elimelech says, 'Oy, gevaldt!  To thegrandson who doesn't recognize his holy gdandfather, AvrahamAvinuu.'  So Reb Kalmish'l heard this, that he didn't recognizeAvraham Avinu, he mamash fainted.  And they had to carry him out. You see, at least he saw him, right ...

The Ropshitzer:  a recollection of the Sanzer

	The Heilage Ropshitzer, the Ropshitzer was on top of themall.  Of the Ropshitzer, we have no concept.  You know the HolySanzer was in Ropshitz for 20 years, and he said, 'I learned fromhim just like one drop from the ocean.  That's all I learned fromhim.
                                         

Travels of R. Shlomo: Shaharit in Cairo


	It was unbelievable ... {eo} I came from India.  At one timethere was Air France flight from Bombay, Tel Aviv, Paris.  Mymazal, it stopped a few months before I needed it.  OK, so I hadto go another way.  I went to New Delhi.  New Delhi, Cairo andthen Cairo went to Tel Aviv.  Anyway, I'm arriving in Cairo (bythe way, all those taxi driers, everybody throws themselves atyou.)  So I picked some taxi man I liked the best.  He drove me... {eo}  It's very hard to find hotels in Cairo.  He drove me tothe Sheraton and then I checked in.  Then I said I have to go tothe pyramids.  He says, 'It's 4 in the morning.'  He says, "If Itake you during the day, it'll take you 6 yours.  But if you goright now at night, it takes you 2 and a half. '  After I went, Irealized, a miracle!  First of all, there's a little Beis Medrashof the g-d, Ramses, right by the pyramids.  Drove there ... {eo}Unbelievable!  It was exactly like it was ... {eo{  To make itvery short, I was not prepared prepared for this.  Wehn we arrivedthere , it was just dawn, mamash, never davined so good, likethat, I'm telling  you.  Besides the Holy Wall, I never had such ashacheris in my life.  {JWP3N29}

	The cutest thing is , I call up Neshama and Dari. Dari was 2and Neshama was 5, and Neshama says to me, 'Is Pharoh stillalive?'  I said, 'You don't have to worry.'  The Sheraton wasready for conversion, the whole Sheraton.  I'll tell you whathappened.  I was walking on the street.  Mamash, I talk toeveryone, I kiss everywone.  I never got so many gifts, everystore I wanted something to buy, they refused to take money.  Allof them were so happy.  So happy that Jews were here, that thereare Israelis here. 


The Seer of Lublin:  Story of Reb Koppel Likover, from the BobovRebbe

	The first thing I want to tell you is that we have theprivilege to be by the grave of the holy Lubliner.  I want to tellyou why his mother had the privilege of having such a son, theChozeh m'Lublin.
	The Seer of Lublin, when he came to Medibuz to visit theHeilege Rebbe Reb Baruch, the Baal Shem Tov's grandon.  You know,Reb Baruch conisidered himself the real successor of the HeilegeBaal Shem.  He considered himself, like the Rebbe.  So when theSeer of Lublin came, the world's Rebbe in Poland, and the RebbeReb Baruch, the world's Rebbe in Russia, like two world powersmeet.  So the Rebbe Reb Baruch starts saying to the Chozehm'Lublin, 'Do you know that I am the Baal Shem Tov's grandon?' And the Seer of Lublin says, "Did you know that I am the grandsonof the Reb Koppel Likover?'

	Here's the story.  

	His grandfather, Reb Koppel, you know in those days, ... theJewish people were not permitted to do so much.  But they hadpermission to sell whiskey.  One og the only things.  And onhighways, they had kretchmeres, you know like a little hotel, like Howard Johsnon's.  And Reb Koppel has a kreteshmere in a city, andhe was the only Jew in the whole city.  And you know at night, allthe peaasants would come and drink ther, with the one exceptionthat Reb Koppel was a Rebbe.  So all the peasants, whenver theyhad a problem, would come to Reb Keppel.  And slowly, slowly,instead of the bar becoimg a drinking and drunken place, itbecaume like a Beis Medresh.  Unbelievable.  So you know what hedid?  He took all those peasants, and you know, why should apeasant be more than a drunkard?  Right, he has nothing else.  Sothe Rebbe Reb IKoppel, when the peasants -- even when they didsomething wrong -- instead of going to the priest to confess, theywould come to Reb Koppel and he would tell them how to fix theirneshame. 
	 I don't want to say thing bad but then a new bishop came. And he saw that nobody comes to confess.  He said, "What's goingon here?  So they said , "Ha ha, you can forget it.  Nobbody iscoming to you for confession.  We have a Rebbe, Reb Koppel.  Atnight when we go to the bar, you know, we're sitting there anddrinking a little bit and we confess to him.'  So the Bishopmamash got mad.  So he said to themn, 'Anybody who confessed toReb Koppel will go straight to hel.l.'  But somehow, he had aconflict and he didn't know how to handle it.  But he knew onething, on Pesach, you have to sell the whiskey to a non-Jew.  Sohe says, "There is no other way.  Anybody who buys the whiskeyfrom Reb Koppel will go straight to hell.'  And who wants to playwith hell, right?  So on erev Pesach he had a goy who's alwaysbuying the chamaetz.  And you know on erev Pesach, you can sellthe chametz for exactly one hour.  Let's say, from 10 after 9until 10 after 10.  And he's waiting, ... Where is he, hisneighbor?  He runs over to him and said, 'Why didn't you buy thewhiskey?'  So he said, "I'm afraid, you know, afraid. '  He runsto somebody else; nobody wants to buy.  And for him, that means,he has to pour out the whiskey.  And he hasn't paid for the whiskyyet.  That means, after Pesach, since he didn't pay for thewhiskey, and he had to pay to the nobleman, or he's killing him orwho knows what.   You know what he did?  It's 10:00, 10 after 10. He took all the whiskey and put it on a wagon and there was a lakeand he put it down on the beach.  And he said, "Master of theWorld, mamash I'm wiping it out from my heart.'  And I heard itfrom the Bobov Rebbe, who is also a grandson of Reb Koppel.  RebKoppel did not think about all of Pesach.  One say, after Pesachhe thinks, 'What am I going to do now?  I'm out of business, whatcan I do ? First I have to movee away from this place, nothing cando.'
	Suddenly one of the peasants said to him, "I know you'rerich, but i didn't know that rich.'  He says, 'what do you mean?' He says, "How did you have the money to have a regiment of athosand cossacks sitting there guarding your whisky?  Eh, gevaldt? So basically according to halacha, he didn't keep it on pPesach,he can take it back.  But he went down to the beach and he said,"Master of the Unvierse, you know how much it took out of memasash to give up this whiskey  please G-d,  Master of the world,if you want to make me rich again, don't make me take the whisky.' At that moment, he heard a voice from heaven, 'Since you giveeverything up for G-d, I'm blessing your oldest daughter Mattel,will have a son and he will be the greatest light in the world.' So this is Reb Koppel.


Story of the Seer of Lublin:  A shlepper goes to a good hotel

	One time a poor man comes to the Seer of Lublin and he says,'I have to marry off my daughter; I need 2000 rubles.  And I don'tknow what to do. 	He says, " I want you to know, I stll have the 100000 rubles. They are untouched in my house.  I have to give it back to him,but I don't know how to give it back to him.  I want you to swearto me that you'll never tell that I had anything to do with it. Just tell him that somebody came and gave you the 100000 rubles togive back to him. Because he knows that you didn't take it; youwere never here before.'  He gives him 100000 rubles and the nextday, this poor man, it's the one who's looking for 2000 rubles tomarry off his daughste.  And he says to the innkeeper, thekretshmere, Yiddele, I want you to swear to me that you won't askme any questions, I want to tell you something that will save yourlife.
