[R.] Shlomo answered,

"`I want to live long enough to hear my songs being sung in theThird Temple.'"

"Shlomo in an interview [SOURCE NOT GIVEN] once admitted thathe has had around 5000 different melodies that have come tohis soul, but since most of them come to hiom on Shabbos, hehas no way of recroding them and eventually, they get lost. Shlomo, in is own words, explains:
l1

"` I would say I make up on the average 100 niggunim a day. Youknow that means that if I would be really serious, I wish I would,I would dediate my whole life just to niggunim. I would sit therewith a tape recorder glued to my mouth and sing the whole timealoud."

l2
[R. Shlomo Carlebach] raised [SOURCE NOT GIVEN (Cf. =sb76051a+ =sh76051b) the following question based on a Rav Kookteaching:
l1
"`If Adam and Eve already lived in Paradise during the week, wheredid G-d plan to take them during Shabbos? G-d planned on takingthem to the Higher Jerusalem, the Yerushalyhim Above, that has yetto be revealed to this world."

A recollection from Reuven Goldfarb, Acquarian Minyan (Berkeley,California):

l2
When I first met Shlomo in 1970, he was strumming his guitarwhile people danced aro9und him in large circles. I strolledup to check him out, and he looke me in the ye, and smiling, without missing a beat, chanted in his gentle, lilting voice,

"Street people ... are building bridges ... for all of us to walkon".

While singing: Days are coming / there will be a hu ger in theworld/ the hunger will not be for bread/ and the thirst will notbe for water/ but to hear the word of G-d"

"OK, Shalom again my sweetest friends. I'm sure you know thispassage . It's a passage from the prophets. And we're living ina huyngry world, very very hungry. And you know if yhou're hungryfor bread, you become ugly, because you are so hungry, yhou can'tbear it. If you are hungry for G-d, the more hungry y9ou are, themore beautiful you become. People who are hungry for bread hasteeach other. They think yo're taking away their peice of bread. But people that are hungry for G-d, ti's the greatest pvivlege inthe world to meet another person who is just as hungry. You see, when it is bread you are hungry for, you are empyty. But when itis G-d that you are hungry for, you are so full, so full."

In Poland 1988 to a mixed Jewish and non-Jewish audience:
[SOURCE: Don't know; but Cf. transcript JW73, Warsaw 1989.]

"If you have to the power to destroy, don't you suppose that youhave the power to rebuld ... [ellipsis hm395]. There is a timewhy you say,I'm Jewish, I'm Catholic. And there is a time when weare one. In a hospital you don't ask.
Friends, the whole world today is sick. Hatred is asickness. Do you think I help the world by getting sick myself? We cannot afford to be sick anymore. So I'm inviiting all the newdoctors of the world to pray for peace, to dance for peace.
{paragraph break; possibly ellipsis in transcription.}

Our ancestors may have been neighbors they were not always thebest of friends, and that is why we are here today. My dearfriends, do you know how we repair the hate of the past? Only byfillng ourselves iwth absolute nad complete love and joy. We haveto fix the past. But you know my friends, world peace is notgoing to come from the negotiators or the polticians. Only thecommon people, shleppers and thieves [`thieves' sic??? -- checktranscript -- sa] , are the the only who can make peace. Ourleaders can be as busy as they want talking about peace, but asReb Nachman says, 'real peace is not betrween ideas but betweenpeople.' [Semi-quotes hm395, but probably paraphrase.]
Did you ever notice that there are no borders betseen peoplewhen they dance? In the Psalms it says that Jerusalem is the cityof the feet. So in order to make peace, you have to use yourhands and feet. So I'm inviting you all to get up and dance."

Russia 1989, to a predominantly Jewish audience.

[SOURCE: Apparently from a tape made and held by Stuart Wax (whoarranged the tour) (or possibly Michael Ian Elias &/or RobbieHalperin), all of the Beverly Hills Happy Minyan.]

When yo have nothing, you're ready for everything. What G-d givesyou before you're born, nobody can take away from you. Thegreatest sickness is hatred. Please friends, I'm begging you --let's never get sick. We have to make the world beautiful again. There is only one way ... [ellipsis hm395] you have to fill yourheart with so much joy that you cannot hate. ... [ellipsis hm395]the truth is I don't kow what I'm doing here and you don't knowwhat you're doing here. But it's so important that we understand, the world is getting better every second ..l [ellipsis hm395]. Come on Yidden. Let's go, let's go. " [Usually the phrase withwhich R. Shlomo invited everyone to sing and dance.]

While singing to the Steelworkers of Leningrad, 1989:

Every morning when you wake up you need a reason to get out ofbed. This morning I was dreaming about you. Who would havedreamed a year ago that I'd be singing for the steelworkers ofLeningrad. It just goes to proe that G-d has more beautifuldreams for us than we even have for ourselves. Do you know whatG-d's dream for the world is? Maybe it's time for each of us tostart connecing to G-d's dream ... [ellipsis hm395] When we readthe paper, we can feel desperate. But when I look at my children,I think, 'Don't believe in the nwspaper anymore.' I bless you andme that we will keep our eyes on our children and never stopbelieving."

To the children of Moshav Modi'in during Pesach 1989.

What does it mean to be holy? Thr world thinks G-d is holybecause G-d is so far awsy. But the holy Izbhitzer says: holymeans when somethng is so close to you. So G-d is called Holybecause `HE' is always there when you seen `HIM'.
Do you know what a holy Jew is? A holy Jew is someone who'smamash always there when you need 'him'.

Then the Izbhitzer says: to be holy, you need to be in simcha. That means: to be holy, you need to do it with all your heart.

What does it mean then to be a holy friend? A holy firend issomene who when you ask him to do you a favor, they don't argue. They are right htere for you and with so much simcha, they want tohelp.

You see, a holy person is somebody wh never wastes time onunimportant things. To be holy means that you have a sense ofwhat is important in this world, like being a Jew, being a goodfriend, and knowing also what is not important; because every oneof us, in our own private lives, is so concerned with unimportantthings and we forget ... [ellipsis hm395] I want to mamash blessyou that your parents should have more time for you, but also thatyou should have more time for your parents. Are you taking outtime to be with your parents also? The holiness of yiddishkeit isthat parents and children are so good to each other.

Q: What is happening spiritually in Israel now.

A: [R. Shlomo:] It's a very very very deep question, hardquestion and a painful fquestion. You see, the main thing is,Israel has to be rebuilt. Not only physically, but spiritually. You see, we Jews were in exile for 2000 years. Suffering to theutomost, you know? Ok, so then they put us in gas chambers[sic??]. Finally, a few people who were left, built a littlecountry, beacause it has to be rebuilt, you know? Until this verymoment, we have begun to rebuilt it a little bit physcially, butwe are {not??} so far in rebuilding it spiritually. And so muchis needed at this point. You see, the whole world is literally[hic sic??] waiting for us, for our holy message. Especiallyafter the Six Day War, the world was waiting for a heavenlyexplosion. And sadly enough, it didn't come. You see, the youngpeople are really very holy and are ready for anything in theworld, if you teach it to them. But the teachers in Israel, youknow, they are sweet people, but they are not on that level. Again, the rabbis who are supposed to be the religious leaders, they are completely behind the times, you know, they know all thelaws of Shabbos, of meat and milk, but don't know anything abouthuman beings. They just aren't plugged into what's happeningtoday. If only we would come out of the world with a real messageof Abraham, of the Onness of G-d, of the love of G-d, of the peaceof G-d, that is what the whole world is waiting for us to say, andthat is what G_d is wating for us to do.

Q. Do you have anything else you whould like to mention?

A: As a Jew, I feel that my people [hic sic??] haven't come outof the ghetto [hic sic??] yet. It takes a long time to get peopleout of the ghettos, out of the gas chambers, And it just hurts meso much to see that we haven't. We haven't connected to our holyspines yet. A holy spine means we know how to walk straight andtell the world who we are, what we are ... [ellipis hm395] andthis is what I would really like to do.

Q: At your House of Love and Prayer, you'll just be teachingJewish teachings? You wont' be bringing in other traditions?

A: There are other places for that, you know. We don't have awholesale store at the House of Love and Prayer. We just haveretail ... [ellipsis hm395] You see, everyone has something to sayto the world, and we Jews have been holding back our own messagefor so long. So, if we have a message of love and oness again, wewill be able to stand face to face with the world, and we willbecome closer to the world, and the world will love us again [hicsic??] and we will really be able to bring the Great Day together.

Q: But to do that, one has to have a strong faith or beliefsystem to being with.

A: I think we halready have it, but it needs to be uncovered. Wejust need to be soul archeologists, you know.

EDITORIAL COMMENT: [hic sic??] means, I read it, but Iain't sure he said it.
Maybe the Berkeley Barb editor, maybe the HappyMinyan editor. A normal person responds to an encounterwith an honest man by trying to quietly fix him up alittle bit.
Like, I've not run a spellcheck 1-authorspecialized dictionary on the 3 Mb of verbatim R.Shlomo teachings I've got on disc [ok, more precisely, Idrop out phrases, but I don't often add words nowadays, and when I do I usually toss them into brackets [ ] ],but if I did, I bet the words (or in a few cases, phrases) I've flagged sic?? wouldn't be in it. Eg,I've often heard R. Shlomo use the term 'the sixmillion', but not 'gas chambers'. I heard him use thephrase 'love us' at Yakar in 93(?), but only ironically. (Of course, that is almost 25 years later.)
And I'd not bet with dollars on these instances;but I think these approach may be useful. Anyhow, if wecan ever move to tape-to-disc voice recognitionsoftware, it will be necessary; spotting unacknowlegededitorial tampering [my bugbear of the year] is just aby-product. -sa]

Michael Ozair quotes the following, source not given:
"Ther is nothign wrong with being hardi. The question is, overwhat things are you going to be haredi about? Over throwingstuones at non-observant Jews on Shabbos? Or oever invitng nonobservant Jews as guests for Shabbos?"

R. Shlomo commenting [SOURCE NOT GIVEN] on ("The heavens are of'', but the earth `HE' has given to humanity" {Hallel Psalm: 115}. [A bit more historically and less politically correct: " gave tothe sons of Adam [earth; 'mankind']"

It is in your hands how much light ther should be in this world. G-d created heaven to be heven, b ut the earht 'HE' put into thehands of man. You can make it heven, or you can meake it hell. It's ukp to you. You can make it as big as G-d wants it to be, oryou can make it as small as a flashlight.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
[SOURCE NOT GIVEN; presented as verbatim quote from R. Shlomo:]

Cf. =7605*
When G-d created the world, 'HE' said, 'Let there be Light, letthere be fishes, let there be men.'

Do you you think when G-d was syaing this, 'HE' spoke in a harshvoice? For example, 'Let there be fishes!' as if 'HE' said it ina fish market? or 'Let there be cows' as if 'HE' said it in abutcher shop?

The truth is, 'HE' didn't even say it, 'HE' sang it. `HE' sangthe whole creation into being.

Reb Nachman says, whenever you talk without singing, you aredisconnecting yourself from the creation of the world.

[I recall a similar remark from a Yakar seminar, ca. 93 [thisexcerpt might be from same]; R. Shlomo was speaking of a talkhe gave in Germany, making this same point, and he reproducedthe way he said it in modern German, the way maybe a lstclass elevated-train conductor would say it. Rather funny, but I don't recall the exact wording: "Ja, wir haben jetztein kleine _____, ja?". Not really offensive, just, likemodern Germany, invincibly stupid. -sa]

To indulge in a few personal remarks:

	(1) Others have noted the risks of using anthropormophicmeta-language in theology, though have maybe underestimated itsbenefits. Still, if it offends it ain't effective; one wants agender-neutral term -- either the transparent masculine, which ismost likely to be transparent only to the masculine sector; or,inadequately, my half-quotes.
I don't intend capitalization to intensify the unintendedmasculine -- "atmosphere" -- of an unavoidable pronoun; butrather, in line with Jewish tradition, in another new attempt, awkward and inadequate, to deflect the move toward the vanity ofanthropomorphization (conventions have shelf-life.)

	(2) I've come down heavily in this input on the need toidentify sources; as I've elsewhere indicated, my preconceptionsformed around the handling of Wittgenstein's Nachlass by hisliterary executors. Without a publically accessible set ofverbatim texts, one risks all the problems of "privileged acesss"(in a non-Wittgensteinian sense) and selective if notunintentionally tendentious presentation; which is bound toconstitute trivialization. And that ain't fair.
