The Briskin's mention (article 6/95) that their cousin had found of3 Amdur's in the Johannesburgh phone book "recently".

Reena Teager writes (7 MAR 96) "In the 1996 Telephone directorythere are only 2 AMDUR's, as follows:

AMDUR G.
95 Roslin St.
Sydenham
2192 Johannesburg
South Africa
Tel: 485-1776

AMDUR T.A.
10 Guillaune Road
Bordeaux
Randburg
South Africa
Tel: 787-8053

She forwarded them an enquiry I've drafted.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
ESTHER (husband: MORDECHAI )AMI
Tel: (Tel Aviv): 03-549-4736

4/27/96: Phone call from Inbal: 03-674-1525.
She is the grand-daughter of Esther Ami. Her English is very good;her grandmother speaks only a little English.
She confirmed that it is the present Petra Hotel that was the oldHotel Amdur.
Esther Ami knows her parents and grand-parents, but not more.

A cousin of Inbal wrote a paper on the Amdur geneology, but fouundout very little.
Esther Ami's daughter (but I gather not Inbal's mother -- not sure)-- lives in Yavniel, and Inbal is often there.

There is a Jose-y (Yosefa) Amdurski, from the USA, who now works inGivatayim, and apparently has done quite a bit of work ongeneology. Inbal will get me her address.
Esther Ami's father was Shmuel Amdurski, and her mother was Haya.
(or: is it that her father's wife was Haya?)

LNAB 148 is Samuel (Shmai) Amdursky (m2 of Issac Amdursky) m. Ida(Chishie) Alpern ; Ida is a variant of Haya (I'm practically sure).
However, this is 2 generations too early.

Possibly LNAB 419, Shepsal (Shabtai) Amdursky, w. Eve (= Chava).

LNAB 129 seems unlikely; Samuel, 9th son of S. Hyman. ]

Her father was an AMDURSKI.
Her brother was Benni Amdurski, the famous singer.
Her grandfather had the Hotel Amdur in Jerusalem, apparently insideJaffa Gate.
Ask: Where it was -- the present Petra Hotel?
Yes. Confirmed 4/27/96, per conv. with Inbal.
		When
Did it then move to Zion Square?

I have a note that the Hotel Amdursky was destroyed 2/21/48. Thisis written up extensively in the book, Oh Jerusalem. It wasBritish defectors who had become mercenaries for the JOrdanians(Jordanian Foreign Legion, under Glubb Pasha?) who bombed it.

Benny Amdurski, very well known Israeli singer; Tel Aviv
I have a note that the manager of the Moriah Hotels is an Amdurski-- not is probably ca. 1986, but may 1991.
I was told by R. Gorr -- this is ca. 1986 -- that the woman who ranthe Hotel Amdur -- I think inside Jaffa Gate -- still lives(d?) inRehavia

As noted, it is the present Ron Hotel on Jaffa St. that was theHotel Amdur in Zion Square.
I STOPPED BY THE HOTEL AND SPOKE TO THE SON(?) OF THE OWNER, WHOASSURED ME THAT IT WAS NEVER THE HOTEL AMDUR. He did suggest Ispeak to his father; I'll have to re-check.

There was a Dr. Amdur, a lawyer in Jerusalem who specialized inland contracts (ie sales of Arab land to Jews I assume ) --- Igatghaer this was before 1948 -- he enjoyed the confiendece ofArabs who wished to sell land, and so he became quite important. The office of a lawyer named Amdur was at 2 Rehov ben Yehuda inJerusalem a few years ago.

B(1) Dorot Trees with Amdur's

So: Tree #00102 -- Sallyann Amdur Sack -- not related
          #00238 -- The Tree I input
#00253 -- Noah Dagoni Tree; includes Neil Amdur; probably not related
Noah Dagoni, Remez 20, Givatim 53453; Tel: 03--312061.

LNAB 090 is NEAL OWEN AMDUR, b. Jun 22 1937
In the photo his name is twice spelled NEIL; that is more usual, and probably the correct spelling.
RECHECK TREE 00253
HIS MOTHER WAS BEA PROVUS AMDUR; that PROBABLY links to theSHAMBERG Tree.
RECHECK MY NOTES FROM R. SHAMBERG; I THINK HE MENTIONED BEA PROVUS.
There was also a NY Times sports-writer named Neil Amdur
There was a Neil Amdur who wrote for the New York Times, throughthe 1970s and maybe into the 1980s I think.

#00833 -- R. Brock Shamberg, POB 110295, Anchorage Alaska. Includes 1 link, with Della Provus, who married S.T.H. Amdur.
Source #4: Notes by R. Brock Shamberg, accompanying hisgeneology. R. Brock Shamberg, P)OB 1110295, Anchorage, Alaska99511-0295 Telephone: 90--734-53855

From the extensive notes on her descendents sent me by R. Shamberg,I assume other links will show (if the computer program foridentifying links is strengthened; tho I doubt I'd find any moredata in the mainframe that what he sent me.

LINKS: To Dorot Tree #00833, Input by R. Brock Shamberg
        2 Links:
       	i) My paternal grandfather's father's wife, B.3=Elka Wolman, sister of Davarie Walman, who is spouse of NissenShamberg
I have not yet checked to see if Elka Wolman is included inTree #00833)
 	ii)D.7S, Della Provus, m. S.T. Herzl Amdur

N.B.: As of 5/94 the Dorot mainframe program was poor at findinglinks; it apparently reported only an exact match of names, and socould be fooled by variant spelling and even variantcapitalization!

I(2) THE SHAMBERG FRAGMENT:
	R. Shamberg sent me a xerox of a small sketched piece of afamily tree, handwritten.
It lists a Mendel David: 21 children by 2 wives that? weresisters. 7 by _____ 14 by second
He branches to 2 descendents -- Louis (no further notation) andNATHAN AMDUR 1888 1971 NYC m. Sadie Branstein
A notation from his name reads: Mogildv Russia 50 m. west Moskow
He branches to a box with:
Maurice (who is connected with an arrow to Cindy), with a side note1923 Brooklyn), Melvine, Selma, Eleo______.

A side notation reads: Cindy Amdur, 358-4871 2019 Lurine??

I haven't yet fit this fragment into the puzzle.
The birth date of 1888 might fit the Nathan Amdur in Source #1(although it really seems to late; and that Nathan Amdur marriedJenny Amdur.)

I recall meeting a Judy Amdur in Boston, probably early 1970s butmaybe 1960s, and establishing that she was a relative. She was anartist, more or less my age.
I DON'T FIND HER LISTED IN LNAB

I have a note of a Mary? Amdur Baker award given by the New IsraelFund; their main office is in NYC. That would probably be withinthe last 5 years or so.
I DON'T FIND HER LISTED IN LNAB

OTHER NOTES ON AMDUR's in my files

I find rather large numbers of Amdur's listed in various phonebooks, including NYC, Jerusalem, Chicago.

I find a note of an Eli and Rose Amdur, Minneapolis, Minnesota

Check Meir Indor, Terror Victims Association, 81 Rashi, POB 23666,Jerusalem 23666; Tel: 02-388999; 389217.
IS INDOR derived from INDURA, ie Amdur ??
N.B.: Noam Arnon, who David Bedein referred me to as someone Icould ask about Amdur's in Hebron, is also at this address.
However, it may be that some settled in this region, aroundTiberias, as the Karliners 's did.

NOTE THAT I LIST BELOW ALL NAMES, BUT NOT ALL DATA; ONLY THAT DATAWHICH WAS TRANSLATED FROM HEBREW.
NAMES MUST BE RE-ENTERED IN HEBREW; WITH SO MUCH VARIATION INTRANSLITERATION, VALUE FOR AN ELECTRONIC SEARCH IS LIMITED.

I don't know if Yad V'Shem enables electronic download; if not, onewould have to go back to these data-entry sheets, on whichapparently Yad V'Shem staff entered data in Hebrew script, usuallywriting rather hastily, so that in some cases it might take anative-Israeli to re-type the handwriting accurately. Also, it ispossible that staff introduced some error and made some incorrectassumptions about names at this stage.

YAD V'SHEM REQUESTS THAT A "PAGE OF TESTIMONY" BE SUBMITTED FOR ALLPERSONS WHO PERISHED DURING THE HOLOCAUST, not later than October1945. Family name must be submitted to enter on a seperate pageof testimony; otherwise notr as 'spouse of' or 'child of'.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
N.B.: Search is by phonetic Hebrew, but without including suffix. Hence AMDUR (Aleph-Mem-Dalet-Vav-Resh) is equivalent to AMDYR,
[and would be equivalent to AMDUR, AMDER, AMDIR, since vav can berepresented by o , u , and could be reprented by y and i [althoughy and i usually represent yud].
AMDURSKY is counted in this system as a seperate Archive,
AMDURSKI [AMDUR, with suffix Samech-Kof-Yud] is equivalent toAmdurska, and would be equivalent to AMDURSKY
I neglected to request a search for AMDURER, which would be adistinct Archive in this system. AMDUR, AMDURSKI, AMDURSKY, andAMDURER [as in 'Hayim Heikel Amdurer'] is used to designate someonefrom Amdur. 'Amdurer' could, I think, have something of anhonorific connonation, in the sense of 'The Amdur'; distinguishedRebbes are referred to by the name of their town, with the suffix'er'.

FIND OUT WHAT YAD V'SHEM CAN SUPPLY IN DOWNLOAD:

We have, then, the following variants:
Base: Aleph-Mem-Dalet-Vav-Resh:

AMDUR
	Amdyr
Amder (Unless the e was from Ayin, which seems unlikely)
AMDURSKY
	Amdurski

AMBER (In LNAB) [NOT YET CHECKED]

AMDURS (In LNAB) [NOT YET CHECKED]
	Amders

AMDURER [NOT YET CHECKED]

The preceeding does not begin to address possible variants in theroot; ie Ayin for Aleph and Nun for Mem; viz: INDOR (Indura).

Nor does it address the question of tracking people from the shetlof Amdur who did not use AMDUR , nor a variant thereof, as theirfamily name.

There were as of June 5, 1995, 11 records for AMDUR, and 12 recordsfor AMDURSKI. I do not know how many, if any, records there werefor AMDURER.
I obtained 10 of the records for AMDUR, with a notation of the nameof the person who constitutes the 11th; and obtained the 12 recordsfor AMDURSKI.
R. Joe Schachter (brother of R. Zalman Schachter), a former staffmember at Yad v'Shem and now a volunteer, was quite helpful.

Except for the last name and family name, most of the record is inHebrew. My Hebrew is very poor; I will transliterate what I can. A photocopy set will be sent to Nancy Amdur Briskin, and anotherset has been given to DOROT.

----------------------------------------------------------------
In Yad v'Shem data-entry sheets, J is often used as transliterationof Yud; I use only Y or I .

YAD V'SHEM ARCHIVE FOR AMDUR, JUNE 5, 1995

11 RECORDS.
I obtained printouts of 10, plus a note on 1 record of the Spouse, who has a seperate record. However, I was unable to obtain fullinformation on that spouse; one will have to request it anothertime.
My listing is alphabetic.
Number is merely the reference number assigned by Yad V'Shem, whichidentifies block submissions.
Records prefixed with an asterisk are entered in Hebrew, withfamily name and lst name transliterated by Yad v'Shem; furthertransliteration is by me, and subject to inaccuracy.

Data on all these forms is rather complete; I have typed in onlywhat was written in English, plus a few items that I could quicklytransliterate. I apologize for not having made the time to domore.

MISCELLANEOUS AMDUR NOTES FROM OLD FILES (CA. 1988)
.p
AS-YET-UNPLACED AMDUR'S IN ISRAEL:

1) South African Amdurs: Borris & Sonja Rose, 135/8 Ramot B,Jerusalem. 02-867431
[N.B.: The Jews who settled in the Union of South Africa werepredominantly from Lithuania; hence it is not surprising that therewere be Amdur's there.]

----------------------------------------------------------------

2) I find a letter from 14/12/87, from,
Dr. Yitzak & Miryam Amdur Gedalia, 21 Balfour, Jerusalem.
Faculty of Dental Medicine, Hebrew University-Hadassah School ofDental Medicine, POB 1172; Tel: 02-428-593.
He writes that his wife's father's sister was married to theLawyer, Amdur. [I assume this is the man of whom Mr. Ezra spoke, distinguished for purchasing land from the Arabs prior to theestablishment of the State; probably the man who had (and still has-- I neglected to check -- an office on the Ben Yehuda pedestrianmall in Jerusalem.)

So that gives us:

XX Amdur -- ([sister] YY Amdur m. Lawyer Amdur) [related?]
Miryam Amdur m. Dr. Yitzak Gedalia

He mentions that the wife of the lawyer Amdur passed out, but thathis daughter would contact me. [I was at Modi'in at the time, without a telephone, so maybe she wasn't able to.] He also says,"give our regards to the Amdurs at Forsyth." I can't imagine whatthat is.

.P
HOTEL AMDUR:

3) Hotel Amdursky was bombed and destroyed by British mercenariesin the pay of the Jordanians, on 2/21/1948. I was in Zion Square,Jerusalem. Details are given in the book, Oh Jerusalem.
Mr. Ezra told me, if I understood, that it was the Ron Hotel; but Istopped by and found no indication of same. Maybe it was on theother side of the street, where that monstrosity of a new hotel isnow. The Ron does not look as if it was every destroyed.

If I recall, it was Rabbi Shmuel Gorr who told me that the HotelAmdur had been located inside Jaffa Gate. I think he said thatthere was a women still living in Rehavia - this was ca. 1988 --who was connected with it. My guess is that this was what ispresently the Petra Hotel (Arab), since the only other hotels areowned by the Greek Orthodox. Maybe it moved from there to ZionSquare prior to 1948, I'd assume.

AMDUR'S IN HEBRON, PRE-1929:

I once, in Jerusalem, met a man, on the street, who told me thatAmdur's had lived in Hebron.

Maybe one would find out something at the Museum of Gush Etzion, which is in Gush Etzion, somewhere. Gush Etzion surrounds Hebron.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
.P
VARIANTS IN THE SPELLING OF 'AMDUR', DUE TO EQUIVALENTTRANSLITERATION FROM HEBREW; YIDDISH AS A TRANSLITERATION INTOHEBREW CHARACTERS FROM ROMAN CHARACTERS

N.B.: Vav can be transliterated either as o or u, and also as e(since nothing else is translitered as e) so Amdur=Amdor=Amder
Yud can be transliterated either as i or y, so Amdurski=Amdursky
[in Hebrew; I'm not sure how whether Yiddish, which is in part atransliteration into Hebrew characters of Roman-characterlanguages, ould have different equivalents: eg, Yiddish uses twoYud's for as the equivalent of some y or i sounds, I think.

As Amdur is a place-name, it is equivalent to 'from Amdur', and'from Amdur' can be rendered Amdurski, Amdursky, and Amdurer

Hence Amdur boils down to the root Aleph-Mem-Dalet-Vav-Resh, withany suffix. In English: A-M-D-[u, o, e]-R-suffix

GENEOLOGICAL RESEARCHER R. SHMUEL GORR, zl'b

I do not know what came of R. Shmuel Gorr's research. I had askedhim to research Amdur's but it's not my impression that he hadfound anything additional at the time of his untimely death. Hewas a large man in many ways -- a love of knowlege, and of theriddles of names of Jewish geneology -- maybe no-one had more of aear for tracing connections through variants of names -- and a loveof the Jewish religion; he was associated with Chabad. Probablyquite a brilliant man, and most engaging speaker. Unabashed, andnot one to trim his sails to fit fashions. Rather a Falstafffigure (though he surely would not have accepted that appelation),in a Jewish intellectual mode. Well, "take him all in all, weshall not look on his like again."
I'm almost sure that Yakov Fogelman's Torah Outreach Programvideotaped at least one of his lectures at the Israel Center,Jerusalem.
I think his nephew took his files, but did not continue thegeneological practice.

AS-YET-UNPLACED AMDUR'S IN THE USA:

Eli & Rose Amdur, Minnestoa

Judy Amdur, Boston [artist]
[I stopped by and visited her, probably in the mid-70s -- she had astudio on Government Center Plaza, Boston. I recall her as a niceperson. I'm tempted to say that a sensed a family resemblance, though less strong that what I sensed with:

Carol Latifa Amdur
l2
[from Florida; probably now in Massachusetts; close friend ofthe Jackman's, who can be reached via the SO, 83 Elm St.,Jamaica Plain, MA. Anyhow, Latifa served as a "barefootdoctor" in Guatamela, and is a certified Natureopath, anincredibly strong and present person -- a few seconds of herattention, which is about what I got, can constitute more ofa relationship than one may have in years with most people. My first words to her, when we met at the Abode, were "Ithink we're related"; and her first words to me were, "Thisis my family." So we never progressed to a discussion ofgeneology; but my mother remarked that she thought we wererelated to the Florida Amdur.
She had two children, last I knew. One is named Dov; I'mpretty sure his father is Israeli.
l1

and with Shelly Amdur, from Chicago; who at met at a Ruach Camp atthe Abode. (She is identified, in #00238, Max Amdur branch).

I find a note of a Mary(?) Baker Amdur award, given by the NewIsrael Fund, whose main office is in New York city; maybe a branchoffice in Israel.

Benni Amdurski, z'lb, was a well-known singer in Israel. Based inTel Aviv. Israel TV did a feature on him, "This is Your Life". Ido not note the date. His son is also a singer.

I find a note of a Benjamin Amdursky, an Israeli, who playsclarinet, apparently of a generation not older than mine.

INFORMATION ON AMDUR ENTRIES IN TREE #00238:
This information is proably included therein; I type it here, to besure:

Min [Minah] Sack named after her grandmother, Minah Jaffe, daughterof R. Nochem Jaffe & wife of Labe Silberblatt.

Norman [Nachum] named after R. Nochem Jaffee

Ida [Haya] named after her grandmother -- Ben Amdur's mother --Heiche?

Ben Amdur brought Abram to the USA

Min has 1 child, Joan Patuka.
Norman didn't marry. [This may be incorrect; Recheck #00238:]
Ida married Ed Altshuler
[N.B.: The name 'Altschuler' should indicate location; I'm notsure that there were many synagogues known as the AlteSchule]

But perhaps he was unperceptive, at least thatevening.

Amdur, Amdursky
town Indura, Grodno
Yid. = Amdur , AMTER
[OK: Amter is a new variant spelling to me.
I'm still not clear which the Yiddish are:

Amdur (Polish)
Hamdura (Yiddish)
[is Hamdura a variant of Indura?? -- which is the Russian??]
Not listed in the Encyclopedia Judaica
Listed in an old Jewish Encyclopedia, which I've not again found. R. Ben Zion Gold showed it to me at Harvard Hillel, in the 1970s;as I recall listed as Hamdura (but maybe Indura).

SILBERBLATT BRANCH: [Paternal grandfather's wife's branch = FM]:
Hadassah Klatchkin -- mother Sheine --
Sarah -- Nahum, Nehame, Minnie

I find a note that Aunt Rose Malakoff was named Rachel.
"13 to US" [presumably: Aunt Rose came to the USA at age 13]
Mollie Silberblatt left Poland becasue she didn't wish to marry aman. Came as a single person to the USa and stayed iwnt an unclein Pittsburgh -- his father's name was Shmuel. She was a strongwilled person, and very religious. She promptly met Ben Amdur, whowas handsome and successful -- not a Cohen -- religious

[these are notes from a telephone conversation with Aunt Rose, early 1987, from the home of Joyce Malakoff]

a shorter note, probably earlier note from same conversation --"loved a man and didn't agree to marriage -- came to Uncle inPittsburgh - Shmuel"

"left Poland becasue she didn't wish to marry a man"

As I recall, I had once heard, I assume from Min, that the marriagewas annulled. I have a note, from ca. 1988, that "her firstmarriage was annulled, with her father's consent, who made herpromise to keep a kosher home, which she did."

I'd guess that what was involved was not marriage, but engagement -Ta'anaim -- which also has the force, in strict Jewish religiouslaw, of a contract. However, if the engagmement (Ta'anaim) hadbeen held, it could not be annulled simply by the woman leaving. So it would seem more likely that she left before the engagementceremony was held.
I do not know how strictly the halacha of Tana'im was observed whenMalka Silberblatt left -- I assume the Grodno region, I don't knowif it was Grodno itself.
However, since she was descended on her mother's side from adistinguished rabbi, I would guess that she had been engaged tosomeone strictly religious.
In that context, this seems to evidence extraordinary strength ofcharacter.

SILBERBLATT BRANCH:
Re-checking my input notes for #00238:

Haya & Hadassah (Klatchkin] brought 1914 by their father. Bouthproperty, deed lost, father returned. Caught in Istanbul, Aug. 4,1914. Returned to Vilna with rest of family, made their way toCaucausus en route to Palestine
[from interview with nephew(?) of Hasdassah Klatchin, in herpresence, at her Art Gallery in Tel Aviv, 33(?) Rehov Frug, ca.1988.

Source of Silberblatt ree: Telephone conversation from Apt. ofJoyce Malakoff Wallace, with Aunt Rose, and with Chasa Krynski,Oklahoma, Freb. 1987.

Reb Nochem Jaffee: Distinguished Rabbi in Grodno. Collected fundsfor orphan girls (for doweries?). Would go to (gambling) cardplayers and ask them for money. Respected for his generosity. Some religious Jews had his picture on their wall.
His wife, Chesa: Apparently supproted R. Nochem by maintining astore. Aunt Rose relates that once when he wanted to vivist hiswife's store, he had to ask in the street to be directed to it.

Their daughter, Minnie Jaffe
Married Labe Silverblatt, who was religious.

Aunt Rose (Rachel) was age 6 when her mother died at age 42 inGrodno.

Silverblatt, Sarah, their daughter: Married Yehuda Krynski, apparently Lubavitch.

Silberblatt, Malka (Mollie): Very relgious. Kept a kosher home.[As I recall my father saying. His father did not keep kashrutoutside the home, but of course kept in the home.] Left Polandbecause she didn't wish to marry a man (to whom she was engaged)(per Aunt Rose). (According to Aunt Min, she was married, but themarried was annulled, -- her father agreed, on cnditino that shepromise to keep kosher. [As I recall, Aunt Rose commented: but inthose days everyone kept kosher, so that is implausible.] Came tothe USA as a singel person. Sayed with an uncle in Pittsburgh --his father's name was Shmuel. A sgrong willed person, veryrelgious. Promptly met Benjamin Amdur.

FURTHER NOTES ON BENJAMIN AMDURSKY:
[Due to limitation of space, this information was included only inabbreviated form in #00238; it should be added if I use the Cherrysystem.]

Benjamin Amdur left what was then Russia, in order to avoid theCzarist draft, as I recall my father telling me when I was young.(In Czarist days, Jews were in effect conscripted for life.)
He forgo'd his ambition of becoming a doctor, in order to gointo business.
He started selling in trains -- candies and such, as I recallmy father telling me when I was young -- and then built up a men'sclothing business -- I think mostly woolens, and I think of goodquality -- in order to bring over the rest of the family.
My father worked in his store after school, and was, as Irecall (when he helped me buy a tweed sportscoat, probably in earlyhigh school) was an excellent judge of good quality in clothing,sp. woolens.
My uncle Noah, brother of Benjamin Amdur, established theAmdur Leather Company, in Boston. As of the 1940s and 1950s, UncleNoah, albeit rather right-wing I think, was quite rich, at leastrelative to my father's salary as an Instructor at MIT. UncleNoah's wife, as I recall, was Tillie [I may recall that from havingwritten in in #00238.]
