REF: TIME 22 July 96 (James Carney, with reporting byDeanFischer/Washington and Jamil Hamad and Eric Silver/Jerusalem
------------------------------------------------------------------

"the President never once called Netanyahu `Bibi', as he isuniversally known in Israel"
l2
COMMENT: Universally known; but not universally called, norreferred to as.
This is a a minor slip, but significant, because it shows howout-of-touch the TIME staff is with Israel.
l3
During the Vietnam War, critics noted that Secretary ofDefense McNamara consistently mispronounced it Veet-nam,and made the point that if no-one to whom he spokedared even correct him on that, he was probablymisinformed on far more important issues (eg, whetherthe war was win-able).
l2
It also suggests that the reporter (in this case, EricSilver) has rather little control over the final article.

l1
"the U.S. officials were disturbed by his refusal to adapt hisideologically dirven campagin rhetoric to the practical realitiesof governing."
l2
COMMENT: This is one of new cliches with which the media, like tugboats with an ocean liner, try to push Netanyahuinto an acceptable berth. The usual buzzword now is'pragmatic'
