Reports a Peace/Rabin-Memorial demonstration as "severalthousand", adds the organizers estimated the number as "up to50,000", does not give police estimates
l2
[in the USA 60s, one always got a police estimate, I don'tknow if that's done here].
l1
Israel radio/TV often use the cop-out phrase "several thousand",not in its usual meaning of 3,000, but with the intendedmeaning: 3000 or more.
l2
Sometimes they use the phrase "tens of thousands", I'm notsure if that means that "several thousands" is to beunderstood as 3000 9999 .
l1
Anyhow: the demonstrators are reported as having formed ahuman chain stretching 5 km. from Zion square to Mt. Herzl. Ifone estimates an average arm-span at 1 meter (an adult arm-span is_____ ), and assumes that they would have extended the humanchain longer if they had more people -- eg, many times around Mt.Herzl, that gives a figure of about 5000.

During the previous Administration, Michal Yudelman dispensedinside gossip, if not necessarily information, with verve, wit,and poise.

The lead paragraphs of this week's article show an exceptionally strong, almost classical prose style. They also join anapparently orchestrated campaign to resussitate last year'sattempt to tar the entire nationalist camp with the antics of thefirst few outrageous fellows who pop up (or if need be, are poppedup).
ANALYSIS is left an exercise for the reader.

RE: Media coverage of the burnt Tora scrolls at Joseph's Tomb and at Rachel's Tomb.

There was practically none.
As I've mentioned, I learned that Tora scrolls had been burned inJoseph's Tomb only from an incidental TV shot, I think on CNN.

I learned that Tora scrolls had been burned at Rachel's Tomb onlyfrom a minor news item, Israel radio I think, noting that theywould be buried.

I think it's fair to say that such news items would have reducedsupport for the Piece Process in galutz, especially the USA. Oneof the first things I learned about Judaism was that one risksone's life to save a Tora scroll. That this is not entirely truedoes not lessen its centrality to the galutz conception ofJudaism. Personally, though I've been here 10 years, I think Iwas more shocked by phots of burned Tora scrolls than I am byphotos of terrorist attacks.

[Easy, chick: Who incited whom to do what? To say thatthe Prime Minster is unwittingly functioning in a mannerlikely to endanger the survival of Israel may beinflamatory, but it ain't incitement. And many a goodand legitimate political speech has inflamed passions.]

[Yup: It took extraordinary R&D, and major logisticbackup, to design, develop & deploy the hot-tea shot.]

Boiling tea
l3
[Boiling water can cause 2nd-degree burns, I reckon. And tea is made by pouring boiling water on tea leaves(or in military manner, by adding tea-leaves to boilingwater, filling the pot to the top with sugar, andleaving). But as soon as the water gets into the cup,it stops boiling. And then you have to carry itoutside. And wait for the motercade. And unless it'sin a thermos bottle, or at least a captain's cup with alid, I don't know how hot it's gonna stay. Nor if itcan produce 2nd-degree burns.

On the other hand, the custom of greeting distinguishedvisitors with a cup of hot tea, rather than bread andsalt, or bread and wine, is of relatively modern origin(ie, not heard of prior to last week, even in England.)

And too, to be jostled such that one spills a full cupof tea in someone's face, normally occurs only inconsequence of the impact of a ballistic groundhog.

OK: it was an intentional rude act. The extent ofinjuries, apparently not evident on Yael Dayan's face, was likely exaggerated; it seems unlikely that they were2nd-degree burns. The intent was probably not to causeserious bodily injury, unless the tea was spiked withacid. It's probably true that those of us who fantasizecommiting such acts, eg me, don't realize the extent ofinjury that a cup of hot tea could cause.
