Pre-setting the terms of debate:

TEXTS:
"There's already a poisonous atmosphere"
"possible future solution "[for Jerusalem]

CRITICISM:
1) There was not a poisonous atmosphere a few days before.
2) One had not hitherto thought of Jerusalem as a problem thatrequires a solution (defined as taking the form of some sort ofpartial surrender of sovereignty).

DISCUSSION: The last few national campaigns in the USA have beencharacterized as setting new lows of dirty campaigning; onesuspects that Peres may, as in so much else, follow suit. Thereseem signs of an attempt to re-animate (in the manner of Dr.Frankenstein and the Maharal of Prague) the witchhunt thatfollowed the assassination. Hence the rather preposteroussuggetion that criticism of tentative Labour policies for sharingsovereignty in Jerusalem verge on "incitement" [where it is nolonger deemed necessary to allege who is inciting whom to do what, much less why doing that would be subversive &/or illegal], andthe rather bizarre charges of assassination plots.

UNEQUIVOCAL STATEMENT OF THE WEEK: (JP 2/19 (Makovsky/Collins):
"the Prime Minister wishes to emphatically and unequivocally statethat he has no knowledge whatsoever of any offical persons dealingwith Jerusalem or conducting negotiations on this issue."
COMMENT: Messrs. Hirschfeld & Pundack are not `official persons'

UNQUOTABLE QUOTE OF THE WEEK: A spokesman for the ForeignMinistry who explained Israel's rapport with Morocco as necessaryto "cover our flanks"
