MEGA-PHANTOM-TAXI-DRIVER

There are now frequent references to the public debate overwhether or not the settlement of Netzarim should be dismantled.

But: there's no such public debate. It's a government-createdfiction that, with enough hot air pumped in, may take off.

The government has exploited the recent terrorist attacks toduplicitously argue in the Israel media that Netzarim should bedismantled.

The first step toward reaching an insane conclusion is topostulate it as one of two contrary but (implicitly) equallyrational alternatives.

PEACE NOW MEETS THE NEVER-NEVER

If anything is sacred to post-Zionism, it is the principle ofBuy Now Pay Later.
A flying flock of hothouse doves have given us Peace Now, inthe Orwellian sense of the term.
But there won't be a payoff.
Ever since barfing back Carter, the USA comic-book democracyhas been trying to throw off the warm wet blanket of yuppieliberalism epitomized by Clinton's image. Unfortunately, itsfreedom of choice is limited to plutocratic misognynisticmisanthropy.
The reactionaries now dominating the USA legislature areunlikely to maintain miminal entitlements to the victims of theirown economic system, let alone subsidize the self-professedpseudo-victims of another continent. Ie, the PLO is unlikely toreceive significant economic assistance from the USA (unless ofcourse rat-bits beome negotiable).
Essentially the PLO is not a movement of national socioeconomic liberation, it's a pirate cartel. The only reason itpretended to make peace with Israel was for the money. Having nowbeen given by Israel a terrorist base in Gaza and Jericho first, better than the bases from which it was expelled in Jordan and insouthern Lebanon, it may next turn to terrorist blackmail, probably directed primarily against Israel, and maybe secondarilyagainst Jordan, on a level not yet seen.
The peace process will now stand like those ominous halfstarted building skeletons, sets for a terror movie, thatdestroyed a sacred land to no avail.

SEE YOU ON THE SAND DUNES

If the now-isolated settlement of Netzarim, politically if notquite militarily abandonned by the Beilin-Peres-Rabin government,is now not worth the risk of defending it -- at least underenhanced risk from the crippling political constraints imposed bythis government on the IDF -- then mere prudence demands that allrural settlements be abandonned, and the people "invited" toretreat behind the secure, defensible, and recognized boundariesof the Great Wall of Ramat Aviv. Or, if that threatens to depressproperty values and spoil Rabin's weekend tennis game, then behindthe lesser fortifications of Bat Yam.

Assuming that it's obvious that the Labour government cannotwin another election, the Palestinians will probably within aboutthe next year force the people of Israel to choose betweenretreating to the 1967 borders, or war.

Historians may note, inter alia, that Rabin was the first tosacrifice Israeli soldiers for political objectives.
The peace process has for this government become an end initself, to which soldiers in southern Lebanon are sacrified aspawns in a Syrian-dominanted war of attrition.
In recent weeks the government has played an incrediblycynical game, deliberately maintaining soldiers under hazardousrestrictions at Netzarim in order to generate Israeli publicpressure, in de facto if not intentional collaboration withPLO/Hamas Palestinians, for a precedent-setting evacuation of theNetzarim settlement.
