TEXT: "Inspired by a two-month backpacking trip through Israeland the territories in the winter of 1991-92 ..."

COMMENT:
So that's how a 34-year-old Maltese citizen living in Oregon cameto produce sophisticated, knowlegable Palestinian propaganda forthe past 2 years, and get it published.

Something seems to be missing from the story. Eg, publicationfinancing. And maybe prior or dual citizenship.

TEXTUAL ANALYSIS: The phrase quoted above doesn't ring true. Backpacking is something one can do in Oregon and New Hampshire, but not Israel; it means packing a tent and cooking gear on a hikeof at least several days, either along trails of bushwacking.

"Backpackers" is a termed used to refer to young tourists who cometo Israel at minimal expense. 32 is a bit old for that.
On the other hand, an indigent 32-year-old journalist might havegotten an interesting job offer.

And one can't backpack 'though Israel and the territorities',unless you start around Ashqelon and walk to Jericho.
So I wonder who fed that phrase to whom.

Well, I have no knowlege nor soure of knowlege of this matter. But sometimes the best way to throw darts is to close your eyesand throw where the target ought to be.

Two months would not be long enough for an average tourist toacquire a sophisticated knowlege of the intifada, unless he hadsome rather interesting seminars.
