Just follow these simple steps & install RedHat Linux on your computer. Before starting to the installation procedure I assume that you are familiar with DOS & Windows.

Running Anaconda - This is very first step when you boot through the Linux Bootable CD. This is an automatic step. You don't have to do any thing here. Good na....!

Probing for Mouse - This is also an automatic step. Here Linux probes for mouse & make it available for further process.

Language Selection - Here you have to select the language of linux installation. The default language is English.

Keyboard Configuration - Select your keyboard model, layout & enable dead keys ( if you want ) over here. If you don't know which keyboard you have, select default & go ahead.

Mouse Configuration - Select appropriately the mouse type you have, depending upon whether it is a 'serial' one or ' PS/2 ' one, with appropriate make. If your mouse type is not found in list then, select closest matched from "Generic Mouse" list. The another window will show you where your mouse is located.

Next you will get a Welcome screen with System installer. Just go ahead.

Install Option / type - Here it will ask you for install Option / type. There are 2 options namely, Full & upgrade to previous installation  &  4 types of install namely, Workstation, Server, Laptop & custom setup. Workstation type installs Xwindows system & desktop managers. Server type is used if you want to setup a linux based server. You have to be very careful while selecting this option because it deletes all the previous partitions. Laptop type is for laptops. It consist of workstation + PCMCIA support. Last type is Custom type where you have to individually select the packages to install. Choose Workstation type if you are new to linux.

Disk Partitioning - Next comes the most interesting part of linux installation. The Disk Partitioning...... There are two tools available for disk partitioning, " Disk Druid " & " fdisk ". Choose Disk Druid if you are novice to linux. You can also go for fdisk if you are pretty sure what you are doing, else Disk Druid is the option to go.

Partitions to Format - Select all the partition you have created to format. Also check for bad blocks. Go Next.

LILO Configuration - Next step will be LInux LOader Configuration. Uncheck the liner mode to give lba32 support for high density disk size, if you have a hard disk greater than 8GB capacity, which is most likely to be. Other option in this will ask you, where do you want to install LILO on. There will be two option, one is Master Boot Record ( MBR ) & other is 1st sector of boot partition. Choose MBR. Go Ahead.

Firewall Configuration - Here configure the firewall for your PC depending upon your requirment. If you are a home user or single user, medium type with default rules will do.

Most of the time it is selected automatically. Select the Monitor type you have from the list of the monitors. If you do not find your monitor in the list go with default, but be sure to write down somewhere, the display card ( along with VRAM ) & monitor you have selected along with Hori Scan rate & Vertical Scan rate for your later reference.

Screen Resolution - Adjust the screen resolution according to your requirment & test it. Screens with 800 x 600 in High color ( 16 bit ), color depth is common one. Move forward.

About to Install - This is the last step of your installation. Once the installation starts over here, you can't go back to change any configuration you have made. So be sure that you have done the proper configuration & go ahead.

Now sit back & enjoy the installation. Create a Linux bootable disk when prompted. A complete log of your installation is stored in the /tmp/install.log file for your later reference. Reboot the system & login as root and / or other user that you have created previously.

NOTE:- It may happen that I have missed out one or other step in this procedure. If you come across any such step, just follow the steps suggested by the installer. Some of the steps which I think you may come across are Network Configuration & Sound Card Configuration.

If you have Network card installed in your computer, your card will most probably get Auto-detected. In that case, supply IP address & other setting to your card & move ahead. If your n/w card does not get auto-detected, pick one which suites best to your card settings depending upon the make & other properties of your card.

Your sound card will also get auto-detected in most of the cases. But if your card does not get auto-detected just move ahead & finish the installation. Once you have finished the installation procedure. Login as root & run the 'sndconfig' command. This will help you to install your type of sound card
