Running Anaconda -
This is very first step when you boot through the Linux Bootable CD. This
is an automatic step. You don't have to do any thing here. Good na....!
Probing for Mouse
- This is also an automatic step. Here Linux probes for mouse & make
it available for further process.
Language Selection
- Here you have to select the language of linux installation. The default
language is English.
Keyboard Configuration
- Select your keyboard model, layout & enable dead keys ( if you want
) over here. If you don't know which keyboard you have, select default &
go ahead.
Mouse Configuration
- Select appropriately the mouse type you have, depending upon whether
it is a 'serial' one or ' PS/2 ' one, with appropriate make. If your mouse
type is not found in list then, select closest matched from "Generic Mouse"
list. The another window will show you where your mouse is located.
Next you will get a
Welcome screen with System installer. Just go ahead.
Install Option /
type - Here it will ask you for install Option / type. There are 2 options
namely, Full & upgrade to previous installation & 4 types
of install namely, Workstation, Server, Laptop & custom setup. Workstation
type installs Xwindows system & desktop managers. Server type is
used if you want to setup a linux based server. You have to be very careful
while selecting this option because it deletes all the previous partitions.
Laptop type is for laptops. It consist of workstation + PCMCIA support.
Last type is Custom type where you have to individually select the
packages to install. Choose Workstation type if you are new to linux.
Disk Partitioning
- Next comes the most interesting part of linux installation. The Disk
Partitioning...... There are two tools available for disk partitioning, "
Disk Druid " & " fdisk ". Choose Disk Druid if you
are novice to linux. You can also go for fdisk if you are pretty sure
what you are doing, else Disk Druid is the option to go.
Partitions to Format
- Select all the partition you have created to format. Also check for bad
blocks. Go Next.
LILO Configuration
- Next step will be LInux LOader Configuration. Uncheck the liner mode to
give lba32 support for high density disk size, if you have a hard disk
greater than 8GB capacity, which is most likely to be. Other option in this
will ask you, where do you want to install LILO on. There will be two option,
one is Master Boot Record ( MBR ) & other is 1st sector of boot partition.
Choose MBR. Go Ahead.
Firewall Configuration
- Here configure the firewall for your PC depending upon your requirment.
If you are a home user or single user, medium type with default rules will
do.
Language Selection
- Select the languages you want to install. The default is USA English will
do for you. Go ahead.
Time Zone Selection
- If you are staying in INDIA, select Asia/Calcutta, No matter how far you
are staying from Calcutta. Select time UST + 5.30
Account Configuration
- Create as many account you want to create for your use. Initially two or
three accounts are enough. You have to create a root account before you create
any account & be sure that you won't forget the password.
Authentication Configuration
- Check Enable MD5 password box & Enable shadow password.
Package Selection
- Select the packages depending upon your requirment. If you are new, go ahead
with default selections.
X Configuration
- Next comes to your way is X configuration i.e. configuration of graphics
card. Select the display card you have from the list. Assign VRAM for it.
Most of the time it is selected automatically. Select the Monitor type you
have from the list of the monitors. If you do not find your monitor in the
list go with default, but be sure to write down somewhere, the display card
( along with VRAM ) & monitor you have selected along with Hori Scan rate
& Vertical Scan rate for your later reference.
Screen Resolution
- Adjust the screen resolution according to your requirment & test it.
Screens with 800 x 600 in High color ( 16 bit ), color depth is common one.
Move forward.
About to Install
- This is the last step of your installation. Once the installation starts
over here, you can't go back to change any configuration you have made. So
be sure that you have done the proper configuration & go ahead.
Now sit back & enjoy the installation. Create a Linux bootable disk
when prompted. A complete log of your installation is stored in the /tmp/install.log
file for your later reference. Reboot the system & login as root and / or
other user that you have created previously.
