Chinese Association of Iowa has teamed up with Urbandale Library to build up Iowa Chinese Library of Chinese books, audio and video in the library for public use. This library will become China/Chinese center in Des Moines to promote the Chinese culture. It is a great opportunity to promote the presence of our Chinese community, increase interactions with other communities and provide information exchange and entertainment in our Chinese community.

Although in testing stage, approximately 100 books are now available for public use and more will be available in the future. CAI plans to have a grand opening ceremony later this year. These books cover topics in economics, politics, history, literature including novels, Chinese art introduction and general introductions about local, provisional, regional governments and tourism attractions. Among them are very entertaining novels, a knowledge series of the great Chinese culture, and great history books. CAI will subscribe two Chinese magazines for the library starting in July, 2004.

CAI hopes to expand and fully utilize the collections and thus asks for your help:  First, if you have any Chinese books, audio and video and want to donate them, please bring them to the Urbandale library and tell them you want to donate then on the behalf of Chinese Association of Iowa. Or you may contact Tianxiang Ye at 225-1018 or [email protected], or any board member and we will collect and send them to the library for you.

Second, if you travel back to China this summer or any other time and find Chinese books, audio or video you enjoy, please buy them, and bring them to the library, Chinese Association of Iowa will fully reimburse you for the original cost. Of course, you have opportunities to enjoy them first. Also please ask local publishers in China for donations of any books. CAI will make arrangement for shipping.

Third, please check those collections when you are in library. We need to check out these materials often. This will help Urbandale library to support this collection. If you have difficulty to locate these materials, ask at reference desk. CAI encourages all community members fully utilize this great collection.

Last, please spread words out to your co-workers, friends, company, church and any others about Iowa Chinese Library.  There are some books and DVDs in English, too. We are willing to help any interested party to find materials related to our great Chinese culture.

If you have any suggestions and comments, please send them to [email protected].
