Civics tutorial group 96S61 started life on 4 Jan 1996 as one of the classes taking Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics and Physics. We were the only class that had students taking Chinese at AO Level in this subject combination, hence the great multitude of different secondary school uniforms actually made the class one of the most colourful in college.

Ours was a typical college life, going through the Orientation, getting to know each other better, CNY, release of O Level results, reshuffling of students, Council Elections, MAF, Promos, initiating the juniors, CNY.... The cycle repeats year after year, but what made everything unique was the day to day episodes that unfolded before our very own eyes. To see the photos is one thing, to experience it happening was entirely different.

Of course, life in Hwa Chong was not all about play. Hwa Chong was ranked the top JC since 1998. Credit must go to our hardworking teachers which we acknowledge below. The whole class passed the A Level unscathed with good grades and made it to university, it was a far cry from the dismaying Promotional Examination results in Year One which most of us suffered a wake up call.

Tutors of 96S61

Mrs Phang SK(1st Civics Tutor) who left the college in March 1996

Mr Seow HT (2nd Civics Tutor & Year One Economics)

We were his first CT and first batch of students. The "Pan-Chan" (give chance) tutor. Friendly and "active", you would often find him engaged in ball games with his colleagues or chatting with us students in the canteen/wing.

Mrs Boo LP (Maths)

So understanding (of our need to go toilet/canteen, talk in class, rest after a few questions...)

Mrs Ho Lai Ying (Year Two Chemistry)

The strict disciplirian (ex-Discipline Mistress) who ensured our Chem work was up to par... Famous quote "No A, 3 Bs, 3 Cs and STILL DARE TO BE LATE!" after our class was late for her 1st lesson (The class was nortorious for being late)

Mr Sebestain Jin (Year Two Economics)

Sometimes hilarious, sometimes naggy... Took pains to teach the class Econs... Famous quote "China's retarded population is more than the population of Singapore" to instil in us the importance of the right kinds of comparison

Mr Low Giau Kim (Physics)

Known for group discussion and presentation during lessons... Eg. "Class, let's get into your groups and discuss why the chicken in the lift was weightless when the cable snapped!"

Mr Barry Woolhead (General Paper)

Heard of a GP lesson conducted by a guitar strumming tutor? Also known for having a cute son...

Mdm Chua SK (Chinese AO)
