More History Of My Hawkins Family

Jacob E. Hawkins ( My GGgrandfather ) was born in N. H. on January 27, 1800. He married Louisa (maiden name unknown) my GGgrandmother, who was born in Conn. in the year 1810 (per 1850 Harris County, Texas census). Jacob & Louisa Hawkins only son was James O. Who was born in Conn in 1839. The 1860 Harris County census shows J.E. Hawkins to be a 59 year old farmer, L. Hawkins to be a 51 year old School Teacher and son James O. Hawkins as a stockeeper. At this time I do not have information or burial place of Jacob and Louisa. Jacob and Louisa was not found on any more census in Harris County after 1860.

The Harris County marriage index shows James O. Hawkins married Miss Clarissa Shook on April 3, 1866 (My Ggrandparents). This was after James had fought in the Civil War. Pension #6609

James and Clarissa were found in the 1880 Harris County Census living in next (farm) address to Mother and father of Clarissa. Her parents was Josiah W. and Amanda (census gave middle name as Elizabeth), C. Morris Shook. Josiah was born in N. C. In 1808 and Amanda was born in Mississippi January 10, 1821. Her birth info was given to newpaper by the informant (Mrs Cox), at the time of her death. I believe this date and place of birth was incorrect, because Riley Shook was born in 1874 which would make his mother 53 years old. She gave her age at 21 on the 1850 census and I believe this to be correct. They had 14 children. Rebecca - married L. Bennett April 23, 1868 and was (living next door in 1880 with two children) The State land records shows Joshia owned 320 acres of land April 4, 1839.

The
1880 Harris County Cesus shows children of James and Clarissa Hawkins to be, Orlena 12 yrs old, Amanda 10 years old, Julia 8 years old, Jacob 7 yrs old, Sofronia 3 yrs old, and James 9 months old. (James Taylors birth date on marker at Itasca, Texas Cemetery shows he was 9 years old in 1880 and this is incorrect). James and Clara only had one more child after James was born, and he was born in 1894. He can be found in the 1910 Navarro County, Texas census in household with James Taylor, Noble, son C. Redmond, daughter Clara, mother Clarissa , brother Clarence (census shows to be 17 years old), and a nephew, Wesley Ford Clarissa should have been getting a widows pension at this time from James Civil War Service. Pension #13470

The 1920 McClennan County Census shows that Clarence Hawkins (26 years old) was living with his Aunt (census said he was her nephew) Sofronia Norris (Clarissa's sister) at 913 South 10th in Waco, Texas. This was her same address when Amanda died. This Clarence was the brother of James Taylor Hawkins. Sofronia would be 68 years old at this time.

Clarissa was living in Dallas in 1915 as per news clipping from Amanda's (her mother) death.

James Taylor Hawkins ( My Grandfather ), son of James And Clarissa, married Noble Wilson ( My Grandmother ) in Navarro County, Dec. 23, 1904
