(He was the father of the first kings of our family in Texas)
Some of
the children of John Turner came to Texas before 1840.
The remainder of the
King's, (John Turner, wife Martha and remaining children) came around 1850-1851.
The 1850 Tennesee Census shows that John Turner was still in Lincoln County at
time of 1850 census. They all settled around what is now present day Sacul. John
Turner purchased his land from Jefferson Y. Jones (James Marion's
father-in-law). This land was part of the land owned by W. T. Williamson, (Which
was a brother-in-law to Thomas Jefferson King) in 1900.
John Turner sent
seven sons and three nephews to fight in the civil war.
Three sons and two
nephews lost their life.

Clipping From Toliver Annual Sun
King, John Turner and Martha Whitaker
F549
The first and only issue of the
Toliver Annual Sun, dated February 1900 in the "account of old settlers" stated:
Mr Turner King Harrison Kings father and ancestor of all Kings about Toliver
came from Nashville, Tennessee in '50 and bought from J.Y. Jones the present
W.T. Williamson place." The year is right , but the place is wrong.
John
Turner King and his Wife, the former Martha Whitaker came from Lincoln County,
not Nashville, Tennessee, to join several of their children who had already
settled in Nacogdoches County.
John Turner King was born near Chapel Hill,
Orange County, North Carolina, on New years day in 1793. Probably when he was a
small child the family moved to Mecklenburg County, for he often told his
children that he went to school with President James Knox Polk, and the Polk
family were Mecklenburg settlers. Turners father was probably named John and he
had six brothers, including Baxter, Thomas and William.
Martha Whitaker,
daughter of Elder John Whitaker, a Primative Baptist Preacher and Martha
Willcoxon Wilson, was a native of Woodford County, Kentucky, where her parents
had come after their marriage in North Carolina.
The couple met when both
families emigrated to Lincoln County, Tennessee. Elder Whitaker was a well-to-do
farmer, but he also preached at the Boling Fork Baptist Church of Christ near
Mulberry, Tennessee. Not surprisingly, Martha's parents did not want her to
marry at the age of thirteen, so they locked her in an upstairs room of the two
story house. But John was not to be thwarted. With the help of his friends, he
made a ladder and he and Martha had a classic elopement in 1812. They started
house keeping with a straw mattress and one old cracked pot.
Although the
records are confusing, (John King is a very common name) it seems likely that
John Turner King served in the war of 1812. His son, Daniel Houston King,
remembers his father saying that he and several of his brothers took part in
this War.
The Kings stayed in Lincoln County long enough to have the family
which was a number of years, as they were parents of fifteen children. Polly
Ann, Tennessee, and Newton died in childhood. The others were: 1. William
Harrison b. ca 1816, m. Martha Hague, came to Texas around 1839; 2. Nancy b.
January 14, 1818, m. Daniel Hughes, d. June 4, 1879; 3. John W. b. ca 1820, m. ?
Johnson d. ca 1865; 4. Isaac Wilson b. ca 1822, m. Samantha Scott; 5. James M.
b. ca 1823, m. Nicey Fredonia Jones, d. ca 1865; 6. Albert G. b. ca 1825 m.
Finetta Whitaker ; 7. Eliza J. b. ca 1828, m. Lawson Whitaker, d. June 16, 1913,
buried Whitaker cemetery, near sacul; 8. Thomas b. ca 1850, m. Addie Ellison; 9.
Rufus Flax, b. ca 1832, m. Margaret Hearn; 10. Martha E. b. December 1, 1833, m.
Littleberry White; 11. Daniel Houston, b. May 29, 1836, m. Rhoda White, d. March
29, 1921, buried in Bradford Cemetery, Smith County, Tx.; 12. Benjamin Franklin,
b. December 22, 1844, m. Martha E. Jones, d. May 17, 1930, buried King Cemetery
(now sacul), Nacogdoches County.
The Kings settled in Nacogdoches County near
their children in the community then known as Nat or Indian Creek in the
Northwest part of the county near what is now the town of sacul. When the civil
war broke out, they sent seven sons and three nephews to serve the confederacy.
Three sons never came back.
Isaac Wilson and James M. died in the War and
John W. died in a Norther prison camp.
At the close of the War, their son
Albert was returning home with Rowland and William Hughes, sons of his sister
Nancy. The trio stopped to camp overnight and one of the nephews died. They
buried him there and stayed another night to start again in the morning. The
second night, the other nephew died and it was left to Albert to ride in home
leading the two extra horses, burdened only with saddles, boots and
clothing.
During the War the family had another loss. Martha Whitaker King
died January 4, 1862. She was buried in the King Cemetery. Which is now known as
the Sacul Cemetery. John Turner married again but when he died December 3, 1876,
he was buried beside Martha.

Research Information
Most all of information about the kings after moving to Texas
was by my research which includes birth and death records and marriage records
from Nacogdoches County, Cherokee County, and other Texas Court Houses.
Other sources was McKnight cemetery and all cemetery's in vicinity of
Cushing, Sacul, Douglas, and Looneyville.
Census records and various other
stories about the King family was researched at S.F.A. College library in
Nacogdoches and state library in Austin, Texas.
Some information was
gathered from a family member in Sacul (Marty Jo (King) Nichols), daughter to
Dick King which was half-brother to Luther Martin King (My
Grandfather).
Marty Jo is Post Master at Sacul, Texas. Her father and mother
is buried in Sacul cemetery where most all of first generation of Kings are
buried.
Other information about ancestors before coming to Texas was from
North Carolina will books, census and marriage records. Part of Information
about John Turner King's brothers and sisters was from distant relatives from
those siblings living in Colorado and California.
All information on the
whitaker family was from Robert Whitaker who is a resident of California. All
information that was not gathered by me is assumed to be
correct.
Notes
about "Jim" my gggrandfather and "Nicie" my gggrandmother
James Marion and Nicie married
before the civil war and had three children.
(Nicie's Parents was Jefferson
Y. and Fannie Jones).
Thomas Jefferson (Luthers father) was one of these
children.
James Marion fought in the civil war and was killed in 1865 (buried
in Shreveport La.)
After James got killed, Nicie married her nephew John
Turner King which was son of
James's brother William Harrison King.
This
made John T. Step-father and first cousin to Thomas Jefferson and other two
children born to James and Nicie.
I have in my file the marriage record
index for James Marion and Nicie and original license for John Turner and Nicie
King and Thomas Jefferson and I.V. Williamson.
Notes about "Tommy" my ggrandfather and
I.V. "Ivy" my ggrandmother
Thomas Jefferson married I.V. Williamson January 15, 1880.
1880
census shows that he and his wife lived with her parents which was George M. and
Fannie (Eubanks) Williamson. Note: there is a grave next to her parents
and brother (that died young) that has part of marker missing. I have accounted
for all other Williamson's (for Period of this type marker) so I believe this to
be I.V.'s grave.
Luther's death certificate (I have in my file) shows his
father to be Tommy King and mother to be Donie Williamson. Jennie (which cert
said info was from wife Mrs Luther King), gave the name Donie Williamson as his
Mother, but all records found on I.V. Williamson only shows initials I.V. The
1900 census shows that Thomas J. had a son living with him and his #2 Wife
(Elizabeth Gresham) name Marion, which I believe was probably James Marion named
after his grandfather because they also had an Eldridge living in same house
which was Luthers half-brother James ("Dick") Eldridge King It is my belief that
census taker put middle names down because both sons had the first name James.
Dick King is Luther's half-brother, because Marty Jo (Nichols) King, Dick's
daughter and Ida (Williams) Perry, Effie's daughter has verified this. I believe
that Marion King who was born July 1885 was brother to Luther, who also had two
half-sisters 1. Anner (Anna) Geneva King b. January 5, 1895 d. February 14,
1970, never married and 2. Effie L.(King) Williams b. August 19, 1893 d. May 25,
1960, m. Charlie Williams. I have not found any other marriage for Thomas
Jefferson King except to I.V. Williamson and Madora Elizabeth Gresham (married
in 1892). I.V. Williamson must have been living in 1885 when Marion was born, so
it is my belief that Marion was son of T.J and I.V. and brother to Luther,
because T.J. and "Lizzie" were not married until after 1885. They also had a
daughter that was named Ora King. She married Robert Barton (he was son of Josh
Barton). I think she may have died at an early age after she and Robert had four
children (Marlin, Martha Jane, Ada Mattie and unknown son). I received info that the
only child that survived their childhood was Ada. After Ora died Robert moved
to Louisiana and married again to ? (Johnigan). Ora is buried in McKnight cemetery
with no information on her marker
I have found a
Marion King in Social Security Death records that was born July 18, 1885, and died
in State of Montana in 1973. As of this date I have not sent for SS application to
check the name of his father and mother. I can not find any more info on Marion.
Ida Williamson Perry told me that her mother (Marion's 1/2 sister, daughter of
Tommy and Lizzie) told her that Marion left home and nobody knew what happened
to him. It is my belief thatTommy and Ida's three children did not get along well with
their step mother (Lizzie), as they all left home at a early age.
