Artistamps by Jas were well represented in the
exhibition Arte Postal hacia el nuevo milenio (Mail Art towards the New
Millennium) at the Museo de Filatelia de Oaxaca. The Philately
Museum (MUFI) is located in the historic centre of Oaxaca, an historic and
cultured Mexican city. It is situated in the ex Convento de Santo
Domingo (ex Santo Domingo's Convent). The museum has recently been
rebuilt and given the touch of the ancient houses of the city. It
fulfills the conservation necessities of the philatelic collections and has
established mail art as a permanent program.
December 2nd - February
4th, 2000 - Barcelona
The first works resulting from the Jas Millennium
Project will be exhibited at the Galeria d'Art ZERO (Canvis nous 1)
in Barcelona as part of an international collective exhibition entitled
Year Zero. The exhibit is conceived as a celebration of the new
millennium. The three works by Jas, each measuring 22 x 22in., are
constructed of tiles made from acid free material, empty cigarette packs, and
cigarette foil collected in Barcelona in recent years. As well the grout for
the tiles is made from the ash of Jas' smoked cigarettes. The works are
protected from colour fading and moisture by a coating of MAXIM XE.
November 12th - January
19th, 2000 - Boston
Jas is represented by seventeen artistamp sheets in the
exhibition Stamp Art and Artists Stamps at The Art Institute of
Boston at Lesley College. In addition to the artistamp sheets,
visitors will be able to view The Jas Cyberspace Museum and its
Artistamp Gallery on CD Rom. JCM has loaned additional artistamp
sheets from its collection by Donald Evans (USA), Clemente Padin (Uruguay),
Vittorie Baroni (Italy), Carl Chew (USA), Natalie Lomanova and Alexander
Kholopov (Russia), and Jose Carlos Soto and Pere Sousa (Spain). Some of
the other artists represented in the exhibit are Ed Varney and Anna Banana of
Canada and Reid Wood, Susan Dworski and Elenor Kent of the USA. In
addition the exhibition includes historical postage stamps, topicals, and
works by Bradbury Thompson and some contemporary designers. Curator of
the exhibit is Bonnell Robinson. The exhibition's reception is on the
Thursday the November 18th from 5-7pm. The Art Institute of
Boston is located at 700 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02215. The
exhibition was filmed by PBS (Boston) prior to its opening.
October 24th - November
3rd - Vancouver
Jas contributes a colourized ink jet print of a
photographic self-portrait to the exhibition Art & Artists of the 20th
Century at Vancouver East Cultural Centre Gallery. The print
depicts Jas at the entrance to the Semi-subterranean Museum of
Tiahuanaco in La Paz, Bolivia during his visit there in 1979.

November 14th - Richmond, British Columbia
Five original limited edition
artistamp prints are included in the exhibition The Popular Art of Postal
Parody at Richmond Art Gallery, 78700 Minoru Gate. The
exhibition is organized and curated by Anna Banana. Works in the
exhibit are drawn from her collection. Documentation on file.
October 7th -
Vancouver
Anna Banana, Queen of Bananaland presents Jas with his well
earned Master's Degree of Bananology at the opening reception for the
exhibition The Art of Ray Johnson and the New York Correspondence
School. The brief ceremony takes place in the Morris and Helen
Belkin Art Gallery at the University of British Columbia. Jas is
now qualified to use the title Bananologist, and to engage in
the practice of Bananology whenever and wherever appropriate.
September 19th -
Vancouver
Shipibo Painting in the Upper Amazon, the 1981 film-video
by Jas, is shown on the big screen as part of Nations, Pollinations and
Dislocations: Changing Imaginary Borders in the Americas. The
film-video stars the Shipibo artist Virginia Flores with cinematography by
Tony Westman and Post Production and Editing by Frank J. Campbell.. The
screening takes place at Pacific Cinematheque, 1131 Howe Street in Vancouver
as part of an evening entitled Native Americas; Sacred Histories, Secular
Myths starting at 7:00 pm. Documentation on file.
August 5th through 11th

The Westender publishes an article in its series
URBAN LEGENDS about Jas and his Millennium Project. The
article, entitled "Smoking to support his art habit" and written by Mary
Frances Hill, includes a photo of Jas and his Non-Smoking Collection
Box at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Vancouver. Document

August 5th through
October 7th - County Mayo, Ireland
Jas is represented by his cyberstamp
Sweet Afton (created in Paris in June) in the international exhibition
Ireland Today. The exhibition, organized by Francis Fan Mail was
supported by Mayo County Council and presented in the Claremorris Library Aug
5th - 17th, Westport Library, Aug 19th Sept 2nd, the Station House in
Kiltimagh, Sept 9th - 21st and CMIT College in Castlebar, Sept 23rd - Oct 7th.

June 7 through 30th -
Paris
After an overnight train from Barcelona Jas arrives in Paris for the
final phase of his 1999 European Expedition to collect empty cigarette packs.
While in Paris he meets several times with mail artist Francis Van Maele
of Luxembourg and visit with stamp maker Michel Hosszú in his studio.
May 25th -
Madrid
After the night train from Barcelona, Jas spends the day in Madrid
with Mail Artist and stamp maker Tartarugo, getting acquainted and
collecting cigarette packs. They meet up with artist-book lover Jose
Emilio Antón and visit a few of Madrid's many contemporary art galleries.
Jas returns to Barcelona on the night train.
May 28th -
Barcelona
Jas attends a performance of the Italian Mail Artists,
Giovanni and Renata StraDA DA Ravenna at the Associació cultural
Heliogŕbal. In keeping with other cultural events, the extraordinary event
begins at 5 minutes to midnight.
May 23rd - 24th -
Tarragona
Traveling south by train, Jas arrives in Tarragona for his second
visit to El Taller del Sol's Archivo museo de "mail-art" (AMMA).
During his visit Jas presents the Museum's coordinator, César Reglero,
with gifts to the Museum from Anna Banana, Ed Varney and himself.
Later, in a special ceremony, Jas is presented with AMMA's Tomate de
Oro. In addition he receives a portfolio of cigarette packs collected
along the highways by César since Jas' first visit.
May 12th -
Barcelona
Jas arrives with his wife Iris for another expedition of
cigarette pack collecting. During his stay he visits with Mail Artists Pere
Souso and Jose Carlos Soto and receives all the empty cigarette packs they
have collected for him.
March 27th - 31st - New
York City
Jas makes a visit to the Big Apple to collect empty cigarette
packs. He stays with the founder of the Royal Order of Ancient Stamp
Makers, E.F. Higgins III. On the 27th, Jas and Higgins travel to
Queens to view the exhibit Transmit at Queens Library Gallery
where they meet up with Artistamp Masters Fernand E.J. Barbot and his wife
Claudine. On the following day Jas and Higgins meet David A. Cole and Deb and
Thom Lynch for lunch and conversation at the Museum of Modern Art.
The group then tours the exhibitions. Jas, Higgins and the Lynch's later
return to Higgins' Lower East Side studio for more conversation, food and
drink. The following day Jas views an exhibition of unknown work
discovered in Ray Johnson's studio after his death and in the evening pays a
visit to The Sticker Dude, Joel S. Cohen at the Ragged Edge Press.
February 19th - North
Vancouver
The North Shore News features the Jas Cyberspace
Museum and its creator, Jas, in an article entitled "Cyberspace rich is
visual culture" by Layne Christensen. The article includes a photo of
Jas with a sheet of his artistamps. Document on file.
