DIVA SERIES And So I Sing ![]() Morgan Monceaux at NEW DOOR CREATIVE GALLERY
“Divas” March 1 - March 29, 2009 Artist Reception: Sunday, March 1 - 3-6PM Gallery Talk: March 15, 2009 - 3-5PM
In celebration with National Women’s History Month, divas, many obscured within the history of opera and theater, take center stage at New Door Creative Gallery. “Divas” is a dazzling array of African American prima donnas, brought to life from the unique world of mixed media portrait painter Morgan Monceaux. The exhibition extends Sunday, March 1st through March 29th, 2009 at New Door Creative Gallery located at 1601 Saint Paul Street in Baltimore, Maryland. A reception takes place on Sunday, March 1st from 3-6 p.m.
Mr. Monceaux is a painterly painter whose divas emerge from a fascination with history and with classical music. Monceaux’s passion for creative expression takes structure in the form of character series devoted to cultural, social and political luminaries; meticulously researched and explored. The product of this passion and exploration translates into series such as “The Presidents”- a portrait of every United States president from George Washington to Barack Obama; “The Royals”- a portrait series of international royalty; “Jazz Innovators”- a series depicting musicians from the tradition of jazz and blues, as abstract and mixed media portraits, and “The Dancers.”
The exhibition hosts 20 works that are composed of oil paint, marker, buttons, ribbons, sequins, fabric and costume jewelry, and other re-cycled materials that transform surface into the grandeur of opera and stage. Nothing has been spared in the transformation of surface into theater. Featured divas in the series include soprano Kathleen Battle, mezzo-sopranos Denyse Graves and Grace Bumbry; Shirley Verrett and Camilla Williams. These paintings are both beautiful in their treatment and instructive in their content.
A native of Louisiana, Monceaux has exhibited nationally. Three of his portraits are on view at the National Portrait Gallery collection in Washington, D.C.
