This is a more capable 5V step-up circuit based on a 16-pin surface-mount IC. Not the easiest thing to solder or build if you are only used to DIP ICs and throughhole parts.
This will provide at least 100mA, and in many cases a few times that, off a single NIMH cell. It will provide more than 1A off two NIMH cells. Your cells must be able to stand high current draw. Maximum power out is 5V, 2.4A continuos or 4A burst. Overdrawing current will quickly destroy the IC, so be careful to observe these limits and don't use this circuit in critical place like a plane / heli receiver where failure means crashing.
That said, this circuit should be able to power a receiver and a few servos, some high power LED lights, a few fans, or the like.
