Here is a simple 5V step-up circuit. This is one of the easiest circuits to build but also rather limited in the amount of power it can provide. It can provide 20-30mA from a single NIMH cell, up to about 600mA from 2-3 NIMH cells. So don't expect it to be useful for much more other than a few LED lights or maybe powering a receiver (but no servos).
