Getting to Know Berkeley
So yet another day of orientation. Sorry I don't have any pics for you all just yet. I'll get to that sometime. But we had a nice tour. I really am glad to be here for Seminary because it is such a fantastic place, with an intriguing if not controversial history, and a fascinating sense of culture. One of my colleagues was actually at Berkeley in the 60's, and to hear her tell the stories, it is radically different now. However, from that spirit a lot of great things happened. Berkeley is a great advocate of social justice and issues, that has not changed. Some things have though as when we walked through UC Berkeley's Campus we saw a ROTC program and a College Republicans table set up right next to the College Democrats table. So for all of you who are afraid of us becoming "hippies" or "too liberal", its actually quite normal out here. Berkeley and the Bay Area actually has more PHD's per person than any other place in the country. Pretty wild. Another exciting thing about studying at the seminary out here is the Graduate Theological Union, 17 seminaries and divinity schools that came together (in the midst of that spirit of dissent in the 60's) in a wonderfully ecumenical movement that not only provides us with the largest Theological library in the country, but also access to many experts in their respective theological (and even other) fields. The worship services are moving and fulfilling, and there are many opportunities for us to meet our own spiritual needs thankfully. Also my cohorts here at PLTS are just an amazing and inspiring bunch, and it is easy to see the gifts of ministry shining in them already.
