Rangers weekend in review

Alrighty this is what I have been talking about the Rangers over the weekend got to the best of them the Boston Red Sox. They did it with consistent pitching and timely hitting all something manager Ron Washington has been preaching. They did it all weekend long taking two out of three from the Red Sox.

On Friday, which was the Texas Rangers opening day they got off to a great start and the pitching from Robinson Tejada was phenominal. Tejada went seven innings striking out one and walking three and yes the numbers may say that is not good but he was getting fly balls and ground balls. The Rangers took the opening day game 2-0 amongst a little over 51,000 people at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. This was the first time in many years that the Texas Rangers have won a game when they have scored two runs or less. That was the first game against the Sox and boy what a game it was.

On Saturday, the Texas Rangers big bats came out and came out to play. The Rangers took game two of the series in classic fashion scoring eight runs to the Sox four. The big highlight of this game is that Sammy Sosa went deep for the first time in a Texas Rangers uniform. With his home run on Saturday it puts him at 589 in his career and 11 away from the goal that he has set. Michael Young too took it to the house with a 3 run double that pretty much put the Rangers in control. Millwood was also phenominal in this game and really deserved the win.

On Sunday, the Rangers looking to go for the sweep had Padilla on the mound and he was facing the fierce Curt Schilling. Padilla was as strong as Schilling in this game the only problem he had was the 2 home runs he gave up to David Ortiz. With the Rangers trailing 3-1 in the 8th Joel Pineiro come to relieve Curt Schilling who had stated he could go one more inning loaded the bases and then a single up the middle cut the lead to 3-2 with one out that is when the Red Sox brought in their closer Jonathon Papelbon who caught Michael Young looking and getting the strikeout and then got Mark Texeira to pop out to the shortstop. Another positive of this game was that the last 3 games the Rangers bullpen has turned up the heat and is not giving up a lot of runs in relief.

Some more bit of good news for the Rangers is that the Rangers are set to call up Eric Gagne who has pitched extremely well in the farm system and went back to back on friday and saturday games feeling just fine. His fastball is between 90-94 mph and he is feeling fine with no bad feeling in his shoulder that he has had problems with in the past. Manager Ron Washington has not yet said that this is final but has stated that this is what they talked about after spring training and have continued to talk about. If he does return it will be during the series with Seattle this weekend.

The Texas Rangers have a three game series with the 2-3 Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Brandon McCarthy will get his first Texas start and is looking for his first win on the season.
