Leaders of the Las Vegas PD, Clark County SO and LVMPD

On July 1, 1998, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department turned 25 years old. This picture was taken by Las Vegas Sun photographer Lori Cain at the 25th anniversary party for Department employees at the MGM Grand Theme Park. Pictured are from left, former Las Vegas Police Chief George Allen, current Sheriff Jerry Keller, former Las Vegas Police Chief Pete Witcher and former Sheriff John McCarthy. Sheriff Keller presented a special award to each of the former police leaders for their contributions to the community of Las Vegas. A commemorative 25th Anniversary badge was designed and worn by commissioned officers during the anniversary year. It can be seen mounted on the plaques being presented.

George Allen, who wore LVPD badge #1, served as chief in 1953, 1955 and 1960. Pete Witcher served as chief from 1968 to 1972. John McCarthy served as sheriff from 1979 to 1982. Another living former sheriff, Ralph Lamb, and three other living former Las Vegas Police Chiefs, Ray Sheffer, Leo Kuykendall and Loren Bunker, were unable to attend the celebration.

Since the date of this photograph, Pete Witcher, Leo Kuykendall and George Allen have passed away.

The Las Vegas Police Department merged with the Clark County Sheriff's Office on July 1, 1973. The newly formed Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) is headed by the elected sheriff.
