| Second grade is a time when children begin to understand that they are an important part of the world. We begin with a unit called Depending On Others. The children come to realize that not only do they depend on many people to satisfy their basic needs, but they too are an important part of the community as consumers. We explore a unit called, Knowing Your Family, that emphasizes how our ancestors play a role in the people we are today. We are introduced to a variety of cultures within the United States. If you look in our classroom, you will see the beautiful Native American paper weavings the children will create. Another unit of study is called, Living in Our Country. We explore the things that bring Americans together and identify us as one nation. The children will discover that although Americans have different backgrounds and opinions, we have many things in common. We have one flag, one president and above all we believe in freedom and respect for everybody. The last unit of study is called, People Who Have Made a Difference. During this time the children will read about men and women of different nationalities whose talents and interests lead them to different careers. We want all our children to understand that their unique talents and interests will help them to contribute to our society. |
