My favorite aunt was Aunt Pearl
Archard. If it hadn't been for her I might not have been able to
participate
in a lot of things at school or other activities. She
would drive Uncle Wally to work and get the car to take us to
different things. She took us to Saratoga on a day trip to see
Pepper's Turkey farm, Mount McKinley and Grant's cottage. We had a
special night at the Lake George park and there was no bus so she
took us for the event and sat by the lake for two or three hours
while we did our thing. One time she had been away a few days and
when she got home she hugged Sandra and Gavin , then came over and
hugged me too. She always made me feel special. She had eight kids of
her own but I knew I could count on her if I needed to. When my kids
were into all the activities, I was sure I took them and their
friends to all that I could.

I think I am fortunate because I enjoyed all of my Aunts, on both sides of the family. Some aunts stand out because we spent more time with them. In the summmer as children we would spend a week or two with Aunt Martha (on Mom's side) in Greenwich. This was our "vacation" when actually it was a vacation for Mom & Dad. I remember Aunts Carol & Gail (on Dad's side) playing with us as children. The big treat was when they would push us around in the wheelbarrow. For us it was a blast and it didn't cost a cent. One Aunt who I have a special memory for is our Great-Aunt Pearl. I always considered her a pleasant person to be around.

My favorite Aunt was Aunt Rachel
Harris Kubricky. After work I would come home in the summertime and
all my kids' Jim, Brenda, Randy ,Renee and Steven would be waiting in
their bathing suits to go swimming at
Aunt Rachel's pool. She was
always so pleased that we came and always made us feel welcome. When
I needed to take my drivers test for my license, she let me use her
car and went with me. She gave me the
encouragement that I needed
to pass my drivers test. I used to be buddies with Dick and Duke
Kubricky and she made me feel like one of the family.
From:
Connie Olson, About Ella Mae Martin.
There are several
aunts I could choose from for various reasons, but the one that
stands out the most, is my mothers brothers first wife, Auntie Ella
Mae (Martin.) She was a tiny lady a bit on the fluffy side as she
would say. (Stout) Never had a grey hair out of place. Sh never wore
slacks, she always wore starched house dresses and a pretty apron.
She would tease us that if she didn't go on a diet she would be as
wide as she was tall. I'll always remember her with a smile always on
her face, and with her hearty deep bubbly laugh. I can't ever
remember her not smiling or not being in a good mood. You could
always talk to her about anything and she always seemed to have the
right answers for you. She loved to cook and was a wonderful baker of
delicious yummy breads & desserts. Whenever we went to visit she
had tasty "goodies" out for us.
She had a vegtable garden that did
well every year, she edged it with different kinds of flowers.
Inside
the house is where she had her passion for african violets displayed.
She had a way with african violets. There wasn't a spot in her house
that didn't have decorated flower pot sitting with the tiny deep
purple flowers in it. She loved to decorate those pots. Growing those
african violets is what she did best. She kept me supplied with those
plants for years. I loved them too. But my thing was NOT having a
green thumb. Those african violets plants did not do well for me. I
would ask her "what I was doing wrong" as they just didn't
live long for
me. She would shake her head in disbelief whenever
I told her another one had bit the dust, then she's hand me another
plant saying "Well maybe this time it will make it." I
always did every thing she said to do with them. I put them where she
said they should go, I'd water them carefully with measured amounts
of water just like she said. I even talked to them and felt like a
fool doing it. She said she talked to hers, and she played music for
them. Nothing worked for me.
When I turned 50 birthday (Eons ago)
she came to my birthday celebration with a gift in hand. It was the
prettiest african violet plant I'd ever seen. It was in one of the
pretty pots she had hand painted. Prettiest thing I had ever seen.
She sat it down, then turned to me and said. "This is special,
you can't kill it no matter how hard
you try." I looked
closer at it then discovered it was the most realistic fake looking
african violet plant I had ever seen. Both of us laughed. Whenever I
would see her she would ask me how my "Green Thumb" was
doing.
That little realistic looking plant has a special place in
my house to this day. She died several years ago from complications
of diabetis. I still miss her and her cheerful ways. I'll always
remember my aunt Ella Mae in a very special way. I hope I'll be
remembered by my nieces and nephews in this special way too.

While growing up we didn't see Renee much because we lived so far away, but the one thing I remember is her making pancakes for us kids when we had our family reunions. Since we lived closer to Grandma and Grandpa Harris, we visited Glens Falls more often and spent more time with Steve and Lisa. They used to take us almost everywhere with them (probably to keep us out of Grandma and mom's hair). I still get excited every time I get to go out and visit (now with my daughter) and see everyone.

Favorite Aunt, now that is hard. All my Aunts were special to me because I wasn't near them all year. I only saw them in the summer when we visited my Grandmother. My Aunt Lena was the aunt we went places with. We always had fun when we were together. Our families had a great time together. I am still close to my cousins Lucy and Barbara because of our relationship as kids. My Aunt Naomi was the fun aunt. She loved to dance and have fun. I remember once she even took us roller skating and we had a ball. Last but not least is my Aunt Dot. She would make Barbie doll clothes for my doll. I use to love to watch her make them. She is the only Aunt I still have left. She is the connection to the large family that was. I certainly miss all that have passed on. I miss their warmth, personality and laughter.

On the Harris side my favorite Aunt was Aunt Millie. I learned so many homemaking skills from her. She was always sewing or making something. I loved to hear her laugh it was so neat. On the Weatherwax side my favorite Aunt was Aunt Martha, I just loved her and I knew that she liked me best. Aunt Martha's house was interesting too. She was very disorganized and had tons of stuff. It was fun going through things or just wondering what she was saving things for. She made me laugh inside.

When your father is an only child and your mother is an only child, you don't get to select a "favorite aunt".

My favorite Aunt was Aunt Pearl Archard. My father Marshall Harris sister. They lived about 3 houses from us in the old days. She was always good to me. She wasn't an overly ambitious person, she spent a lot of time reading. I really liked her.

My favorite is Aunt Gail. She lived with my mom and dad when she was 12 years old. She has always had a special place in my heart. When I was 10 she had me come to her home in Munsey, NY and stay for a week. When I was 12 she had me come to Springfield, NY and stay for a week. She always made sure she planned fun things to do. When Aunt Gail lived in Saratoga I would go down and stay a lot. I have always felt there is a strong bond between us.
